Hackers holding pictures and private data of thousands of nursery children and their families to ransom say they will publish more information online unless they are paid.

Criminals calling themselves Radiant hacked Kido nursery chain and posted profiles of 10 children online on Thursday.

On their website on the dark web - a part of the internet accessed using specialist software - they have shared a "Data Leakage Roadmap" saying "the next steps for us will be to release 30 more 'profiles' of each child and 100 employees' private data".

[...]

The hackers first contacted the BBC about their breach on Monday.

After they published the first batch of children's' data online the BBC asked if they feel guilty about their distressing actions and the criminals said: "We do it for money, not for anything other than money."

"I'm aware we are criminals," they said.

"This isn't my first time and will not be my last time."

Gary Poland. This one's debatable.

Hard to criticise having never walked in his shoes? Or top tier, platinum level coward?

Either way he doesn't deserve to be in this thread.

Arron Banks of Reform lol. They aren’t going to stop the boats but they are going to take every extravagant benefit you’ve take for granted away from you. Poor old baby boomer reckons by paying about £20k a year in tax he’s earned the right to a retirement of free NHS procedures and a state pension. WRONG!!!!!!!!

Arron Banks has always been like that.

Still it's nice to see he doesn't consider himself to be intelligent.

Hard to know what any of us would do in that situation I think. People act on instinct in those situations not rationale and he’s probably going to be hearing those screams and beating himself up for not acting sooner for the rest of his life. Can’t imagine it’s a thing you would ever be able to get out your brain. Definitely doesn’t belong in this thread, I know they’ll be some vice signalers saying “he was a coward, he should’ve done xyz” but I feel quite sorry for him tbh.

Yes I agree, I think people like to think they would do the right thing, but given even at an accident the vast majority of people take pictures instead of helping i seriously doubt they would.

This guy is pretty nasty.  Our digital ID would be linked to this as would virtually every other digital ID system that countries are talking about.  Digital ID isn't just like a passport or driving licence it's EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU.  Health records, spending habits, your online history, who you hang out with, who you've ever been near everything.  Why do you think Palantir and Microsoft are suddenly building data centres in the UK.  It's not for our benefit.

I'm working atm so can't watch the video, but I thought that the proposed digital ID in the UK would only include name, DOB, residency status and your photo?

The Spanish digital ID certainly doesn't store anything other than your photo and your finger print, it has nothing to do with health or spending data. It makes accessibility easier for public services so I think the UK proposal is very similar, although I haven't looked too deeply in to it.

So no, still not concerned

I think we just need to resist using that ID for non-government activities so it doesn't morph into something worse.

Deeply distrustful of any 'source' who feels the need to reference someone's religion in an unrelated topic. Smells like a wrong 'un to me, so I'll ignore

Seems like a massive fuss over nothing, personally.

Under the kind of moderate/anaemic government we’re used to, it is. But my concern is that it’s a gift to a future extreme government.

I tend to think: Imagine a government you hate - far left, far right, either, your choice - proposed this. How would you feel then?

(For the record, I’m undecided on it.)

I think that would be the legitimate fear.

Something like what? What are the specific concerns that would be enabled by a digital ID that aren't already possible?

It’s not that they aren’t possible already, more that if you are required to utilise this digital id for more than essential government services it could be abused by grouping information which data analytics might use to discriminate against and individual.  For example for credit assessment, criminal Profiling or immigration assessment.

I would note as a company director in Australia I already have such an ID, which is linked to companies, tax authorities, numerous govt institutions, along with a personal gov digital id which links my tax number, Medicare, health insurance etc. and I have no current concerns.

Yeah but you're good at hiding your tracks.
