Robbie Neilson

To be honest, I think it's an ambitious signing.

He might be the type of player that has got Burnley to the play-offs this year. By that, I mean he looks like Graham Alexander. :P

His hair style and beard reminds me of Steven Pressley the other ex-Hearts defender lol.

Guessing we're not signing Gilbert then :dunno:

I'd very much doubt it, because i'm sure Pearson said that Luke O'Neill will be given some playing time this season.

How dependable and consistent is Neilson, Jambos? Is he prone to mistakes (apart from giving the ball away with long aimless punts), like being caught out of position, slow turn of pace, mistimed or clumsy tackles etc.?

I will be nice and say he is very average at the defending side of his job. He has no pace, and turns slower than an aircraft carrier. He will make as many mistimed/clumsy tackles as the next defender. If he does venture up park your centre halfs better be ready to cover for him as he has no pace to get back.

Not a player who will get himself booked or sent -off a lot and not one for back chatting referees.

Put it another way Craig Levein moved Alan Maybury from right back to left back as we had no left sided players at the time and AM had the ability to make the switch, this allowed Robbie Neilson to break into the team at right back. 18month later and Levein jumped ship to you and when looking for a right back, he went for Maybury.

I'm guessing Neilson has improved and become more assured once he started regulary, but mistimed/clumsy tackles, slow turns and no pace sounds rather discomforting for a right-back. As I remember it though (what I'd seen of him), Maybury often got exposed for his poor positional play, risky tackles and poor marking. I won't read too much into Levein's preference of Maybury over Neilson though, as his time here proved that his player judgement was somewhat dodgy >_<

If you did not rate Maybury much, then i hold out no hope of you warming to Neilson.

The problem with Neilson is that he has never improved, he is the same below average football player as he was when he first broke through.

exactly. Maybury was immense compared to Neilson. Seriously foxes, huge gulf between the two players imo.

From the reports from up north. It sounds like we have signed gary coatsworth!

Gary Coatsworth what a legend! I nearly pissed myself when you mentioned him. No pace and would boot it into the main stand at the first opportunity jeez if weave signed anybody like coatsworth we've signed a legend.....of sorts.

He can't be that bloody bad if he was captain of Hearts.

He's been captain since Berra left in the january window. basically by default as our longest serving player and as second choice to Hristos Karapidis who declined the offer.

Do not read anything about his ability into the captaincy, he's a model pro and was loyal off the pitch, thus the captaincy.

That's good to know. Can't say this signing's doing all that much to excite me, though I look forward to his deadly long throws coming into play. Anyway, I should probably reserve judgment on him til he's had a few games in a blue shirt...

People don't seem to understand the potential for greatness that Robbie Neilson has. LOOK

He has the scruffiness of Ian Marshall and the ability of Gary Coatsworth. I think this is the greatest player we've ever signed.

The comparisons with Alexander are not too far off the mark (when he was a full back), would rather have Alexander than Neilson though.

As for comparisons with Maybury- don't be too disheartened- he was a decent until he'd been at city for a year- remember how he was when he arrived, not the no hoper he turned into.

As for the looks like Pressley comment- Neilson actually learnt alot by playing in a defence marshalled by Pressley- maybe that's where he stole his style (in the loosest possible sense) from!

And Matt, I know you're probably looking for a rise out of those from north of the border by using the expression sweaty sock- but do you not get offended when opposition fans sing "town full of p**ki's" at the Leicester fans? There's no need for it mate.

Im quite excited on him playing for leicester. Ive never heard of him till now but i seen a Hearts fan say hes got a throw like Rory Delap, and he wins games for stoke in the prem.

I reckon Nige has brought him for that reason mainly, and because he works hard and can put a good tackle in.

Roll on the championship

I thought Oakley had a half decent throw. He can hit the 6 yeard box on most occasions.

Yeah fine but everyone knows that all good teams need at least 2 quality outfield throwers on the pitch. Long throws mean we can minimise our passing and focus instead on simply throwing the ball into the net, thereby scoring goals and winning games.

A quote from some Hearts fan on Talking Balls. Made me laugh.

Trust me, he is not, will not and never has been good enough to play for Scotland.

Lets just hope he is better than the other donkeys we signed from from hearts in the past ie mark deep freeze and maybury!!!!

Maybury wasn't that bad.

De Vries on the other hand...

Maybury was a decent footballer, just lost his way here. Shunted round the team, lost confidence, playing in a bad team. Whatever the problem was, I still maintain he was not a bad player.

Until a Scottish-based player moves down here and succeeds, most of our fans will continue to have this negative attitude towards signings from Scottish clubs due to Douglas, Maybury, Hughes, Sylla and de Vries (but not Kisnorbo...?) Hopefully this is the one to change that opinion for the better.
