Master Fox Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 Meh, a month or two on loan wouldn't be so bad. He needs games.
artursteppe Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 My point is that Waghorn has had little game time to prove he is suited to Sven's system. Yakubu and Vassell aren't unproven, but Bernard Parker is IF we decide buy him to replace Waghorn as backup. I find it quite bizarre for anyone to suggest Waghorn is proven, and a full international with thirty appearances and ten international goals ( Bernard Parker ) is somehow unproven.

Championship football isn't totally about ability and quite often foreign players struggle to get to grips with the pace & roughness of the game, sometimes they get homesick, he may hate Leicester, family may not come & if anyone does they may not settle, or plain & simple he may not be up for a freezing cold away game on a wet night away from home in the middle of February. There's far more to being proven in this division than a few caps for the only ever host nation to go out in a group stage game.

At this level, in this country. It's a different beast to playing in African Qualifiers. Waghorn can offer us something, who knows if Parker can? I wouldn't risk it, there's been enough change and dismantling as it is.

And you could argue someone needs to have performed for more than half a season in this league before they are proven at this level.

Of course, but at least he doesn't have the above obstacles to overcome as well, we'll probably find out when he scores on his PNE debut

I wouldn't risk it, there's been enough change and dismantling as it is. i suppose you have a point about the whole 'too much change and dismantling'. i think you need stability to make a promotion push and that includes the staff and manager as well. Also i have feeling sven wont stay another season unless we get promoted (to be realistic, its unlikely we will) so that's only gonna set us back further. however i do think parker will be able to cope with championship football.
s11nny Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 Of course, but at least he doesn't have the above obstacles to overcome as well, we'll probably find out when he scores on his PNE debut lets face it which ever team he goes to hes gonna bang in a few goals. we have to either play him upfront with someone in a 442 or let him go out on loan it would be unfair to keep him on the bench
hackneyfox Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 Sven has already stated that he would be happy to extend his contract. If he doesn't get us promoted who would sign him anyway?
cc_star Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 It seems that Wednesday is the day According that article on SkySports website, he's seeing if Vassell first of all is fit enough to play in Tuesday night's ManCity game and then of course comes through it unscathed, the supporting evidence for Wednesday is Nigel Clough saying they'll find out mid-week about their transfer target. What I worry about is that it takes 4 forwards who can 'do a job' to make a successful team. Vassell is more often than not substituted later on in games, so surely we're going to miss Waggy even as a bit-part player. Then of course you have to take into account; what if Vassell gets another niggle & can't play for a few games, which I'd say is more likely than not as pitches are only going to get heavier for the remainder of the season? I would say that Howard is the big bruiser who can put himself about and hold on to the ball if we're defending a lead or can offer something different if we're chasing a goal so in all likelihood is Yakubu's sub, this leaves Vassell as the only option for a mobile forward to twist & turn defences, something that Waggy can offer as Vassell's stand-in should he need resting, subbing or be injured. Waggy leaving actually creates a problem, not solves it - Although for him as an individual he needs minutes on the pitch and going out on loan is probably the only way it's gonna happen. Barring any leaks, we'll probably find out on Wednesday.
RizLCFC Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 Waggy leaving could mean Parker signing...so he would presumably fill in for Vassell. In this formation even Dyer could come on as sub for Vassell and Dyer usually makes a impact as sub!
foxoffderby Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 Taken from the Derby Telegraph Foxes striker Waghorn could be Rams target Martyn WaghornBy steve nicholson [email protected] NIGEL Clough hopes new faces will arrive this week and breathe life into his struggling Derby County squad. The Rams will try to land Notts County's attacking midfielder Ben Davies in a permanent deal and Leicester City's Martyn Waghorn could be the striker they are looking to bring in on loan, the Derby Telegraph understands. Clough confirmed late last week that a loan deal had been agreed for an unnamed striker provided his club did not pick up any injuries over the weekend. At the same time, Leicester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson admitted that Waghorn could be allowed out on loan. Waghorn has been unable to break into Eriksson's starting 11 this season and clubs have expressed an interest in taking the 20-year-old on loan for the rest of the campaign. "There were at least two clubs on Thursday who called about taking him on loan. We will see what happens over the next few days," said Eriksson. "I am not very keen to allow him out on loan until we have Darius Vassell back from injury. Hopefully, he will be back on Tuesday and we will see then." Waghorn has found himself on the bench in the past two months at Leicester, where there is serious competition for places up front. They have added Everton's Nigerian international Yakubu on loan until the end of the season and he scored on his debut in a 1-1 draw at Preston on Saturday. Waghorn was an unused substitute. Derby lost 3-0 to Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday and Clough said the time is right for new faces to come in. His team has slid down the Championship table on the back of six defeats in their last eight league games and crashed out of the FA Cup to non-League Crawley Town. "We said even when we were winning games that we needed new players – we need two or three from outside to come in and lift us," said Clough, who had the players in training yesterday morning following their defeat by Watford which is unusual. "We are not sure we have the team or the squad we thought we had some weeks ago, so two or three in at this stage certainly won't do us any harm," added Clough. Clough continued to keep the player's name under wraps when asked about the striker who is due to come in on loan, "We'll be checking up on that and it's the middle of this week that we've earmarked it for," he said. "Hopefully the club he is coming from did not pick up any injuries on Saturday." Derby are waiting to hear from Notts after making a bid for Davies who played in the goalless draw at Southampton at the weekend. "We hope we can manage to do the Ben Davies' deal and hopefully the forward will come in," said Clough. Waghorn, who turns 21 on Sunday, has also been linked with Queens Park Rangers. He has made 11 starts and a further 12 appearances as a substitute this season, and scored three goals. The pacy striker started his career at Sunderland and had loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Leicester, who in August made Waghorn's move permanent for a fee which could rise to £3m. He was signed by former Leicester manager Paulo Sousa. Waghorn is a firm favourites with the Leicester fans. "He will always be a favourite with the fans because his work-ethic is fantastic," said Eriksson. "He is always running and fighting for every ball. Every football fan wants to see that."

Aeropars Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 I thought Sven said that he was part of his long term plans but could do with going out on loan for first team experience?
Jon25747 Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 My mate who supports Wolves seems to think that they are in for him I have no idea why they would bother, surely he wont get any game time there with Fletcher struggling to hold down a place?
Guest shearfox Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 It's rubbish that he isn't getting much of a look in considering we paid quite a bit for him and he showed what he is capable of last season but Sven never signed him I guess and he hasn't impressed since he returned here.
cambridgefox Posted 17 January 2011 Posted 17 January 2011 why are people saying its daft loaning him out,as we need 4 forwards. Maybe Sven is going to replace with someone better! Never understood the Waghorn affair,he is ok,but not world class like some make out.

No one's making out he's world class are they, simply that he scored goals for us last season and has the potential to be Prem class
Kitchandro Posted 18 January 2011 Posted 18 January 2011 He should start on Tuesday with both Vassell and Yakubu unavailable. A decent performance by Waghorn at Eastlands, regardless of the result, would be positive for both him and City. Agreed, if he starts Howard instead I will be very disappointed. Sven needs to give him a chance to prove what he showed us last season.

MattyFromLE Posted 18 January 2011 Posted 18 January 2011 When he's loaned out, PLEASE don't be to Derby and be a DJ thing where he gets the other team promoted. Would rather him go PNE.
Ricey Posted 18 January 2011 Posted 18 January 2011 I can see him going to Derby, doing well and then handing in a transfer request in the summer.
Leicester Lass Posted 18 January 2011 Posted 18 January 2011 Merc Says It Could Be Derby Rams trying to sign Leicester City striker Martyn Waghorn Derby County are trying to sign Leicester City striker Martyn Waghorn on loan for the rest of the season, and a deal could be done later this week. City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed to the Mercury last week he was considering allowing the 20-year-old to go out temporarily after finding his opportunities limited this season following his £2 million switch from Sunderland last August, and the Rams are believed to be in pole position. Queens Park Rangers and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also rumoured to have expressed an interest. Eriksson said he was waiting to see if Darius Vassell shakes off a hamstring strain before allowing Waghorn to leave the Walkers Stadium temporarily. It was touch and go whether Vassell would be available to face former club Manchester City tonight in their FA Cup third round replay at Eastlands, and any deal would be dependent on him regaining full fitness. New signing Yakubu is ineligible as he signed after the deadline for the first game. However, Eriksson does not want to sell Waghorn, who he still considers a promising young striker, and the loan will only be designed to give him more experience. Waghorn has been frustrated at his lack of first-team action this season and has made just 11 starts and nine substitute appearances, scoring three times. He last started a game for City in December, the 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United. He has fallen further down the pecking order after the arrivals of Darius Vassell and Yakubu.
