Derby are ready to bid £3m for Leicester striker Martyn Waghorn

Daily Star

It was only a matter of time really. :sweating:

I'm rarely sentimental about stuff like this, if ever at all really, but I feel genuinely, genuinely gutted for Martyn Waghorn. He very much pinned his colours on the Leicseter mast last year. I don't consider myself a naive person, I'm well aware footballers are performers and building a rapport with the crowd is all a part of that. But I really believe he meant it. I'm well aware he'll move on, find another club and another love and in four or five years he'll barely look back at us and think twice. But for now this feels very much moving your missus away from her job, family and friends to jet off somewhere else and then breaking up with her.

Can't really be surprising that he always comes on with his head down looking lacking in confidence and happiness. Would love it if Sven could pick him up but it's not really looking likely, is it?

Poor lad. Oh well - if he isn't good enough he isn't good enough, he'll survive. He's earning enough!

Would really like him to do well after his exploits for us last season, but I just can't see how he's going to get a start.

I've got no doubt that with some confidence he would be an asset to any team in this division (pity it might be the mutton ****ers), but if they do offer 3 million we'd be crazy not to snap there hands off!

The article has been misread, it doesn't say they're offering £3m, it says something along the lines of.....

Derby boss Nigel Clough is ready to approach their East Midlands rivals Leicester for £3million striker Martyn Waghorn.

It is merely stating that he is valued and we paid an estimated £3m

Nigel Clough will know he's been sat on the bench all season and will bang in a cheeky bid of maybe £1m

They probably see us signing strikers for fun and fancy a go at loaning him.

He needs something to get his confidence up.

If we send him out on loan, he'll get some starts, could build up confidence, could get goals, and if he stars we get him back a better player - that's what it's all about. He just may not be ready to step up to the level Sven wants at the moment. Sven won't sell him anyway, he's too clever.

Do feel bad for the lad, but I don't see him getting a look in here and it's probably in his best interests to move on swiftly. I actually wouldn't mind us taking a loss on him, to get him set up somewhere else/

I don't agree with this at all waghorn is one for the future on loan yes but defiantly not for good the kid has potential we saw this last year .

He is defo one for the future and I would be gutted if we gave away one of our potential stars to the sheep shaggers

Disappointed if he goes, he's not even had a look at the whip never-mind a fair crack of it.

I know our priority is promotion rather than bringing players through, but if he goes what next? Hobbs, as soon as Vitor is fit? What does that say to the rest of the squad, you all may as well look for another club because you're going to be replaced rather than worked with?

We know what Waggy can do in this division, we know he's not had the games to recapture that form, its an unfortunate fact that we're now in a key point of the season where we can't afford the luxury of bringing a player through - I think he should be loaned out at best, but I'd sooner see him come on as sub earlier & earlier in games so as to have a chance.

Can we even sell him on a permanent at the moment - surely it would be a loan as I thought he already been registered (and played) for Sunderland (and us) this season?

Or I could be dog+barking+wrong tree...

If they are willing to pay that much for him, he should go. Better £3m in the clubs pocket than sat on the bench or occassionally coming on in the 90th min

2 Points to make:-

1. If we loan Waghorn out for the cost of his wages, we give him experience, we can evaluate any progress, we save on his wages, and then we can evaluate whether or not we want to keep him, or what price we want to sell him for. What is so difficult to understand?

2. As a fan I want the club to progress in the best way it can. I do not want the club to be giving players time on the pitch simply because people feel sorry for them - aaaarh diddums and all that trash.

Conclusion: -

If Waghorn cannot be risked by Sven for extensive game time, the best option is to let a bunch of no-hopers like Derby play him so that we can judge how good he is! ( Alexander the meerkat would say simplessss ).

:appl: Well said.

He certainly hasn't looked like his old self this season and we can't risk dropping points just to try out players because a previous regime spent 2 million on him.

artursteppe has summed it up perfectly for me.

Don't really know what to think about this one.

I agree with Finnegan though in that I feel sorry for him because of his lack of opportunities this year. He cleary did/does want to play for Leicester and feels an emotional attachment to the club. Just look at his reaction when he missed his pen against Cardiff. He was inconsolable. Given the role he played last season, his relationship with the fans and the amount we paid for him he will have reasonably assumed that he was going to be pretty much our main man this year but as it has turned out he has barely had a look in. On balance I think maybe a loan might be the best option for both parties but this is certainly a tricky one.
