RizLCFC Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 Off to EXETER on loan “@FanhousePercy: #LCFC midfielder Matt Oakley is signing for #Exeter on loan. #DCFC”
rico Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 this was mentioned a couple of weeks ago.......
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 Could do better than Exeter surely?
Guest MattP Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 That new contract was a brilliant decision last season, some farcical stuff has gone on behind the scenes here. Wonder if Exeter have ever had a player on 10k a week? :-D
I am Rod Hull Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 That new contract was a brilliant decision last season, some farcical stuff has gone on behind the scenes here. Wonder if Exeter have ever had a player on 10k a week? :-D I think i`v read on here, that it was Oakley`s prerogative to open a clause for a years extension contractually ...
cc_star Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 Its a long old season a deep squad over the winter could be the difference even if its from the bench on a freezing tuesday night in February
Tielemans63 Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 Good luck to him, I've always liked Oakley. He's never been spectacular but he's a solid player and a good pro.
nuttytimmy Posted 29 September 2011 Posted 29 September 2011 Lest we forget he was a great player and leader for us when we were promoted from League One. Good luck to him, he's been a decent servant for us and will do well at Exeter.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Its a long old season a deep squad over the winter could be the difference even if its from the bench on a freezing tuesday night in February I think with King, Wellens, Abe, Johnson, Danns, Moussa and Fernandes we've got more than enough cover in central midfield. I'm glad to see Oakley go. When he got that new contract last year I was worrying that Sven might have some kind of intention of playing him this season but the extra year clause explains how that came about. I don't ever think Oakley has been particularly great for us, or any other club in particular. Derby probably got the best of him for a while in Championship (only to realise he'd peaked by the time they were in the Prem) but I know that at Southampton he was only ever considered average by a lot of their fans. He's one of those players that has never been spectacular and racked up a lot of appearances without too much attention, but I never got the impression that he really cared about playing for LCFC. His antics at Derby away a couple of years ago were distasteful and re-affirmed in my mind that he was only here to pick up a wage. Had he not been on such a good contract I don't think he'd have had any hesitation about pushing for a move when we were relegated and I always thought the way he single-handedly paraded the League One trophy didn't tally with being a good captain. I've never bought this stuff about him being a model pro either. Yes he's articulate for a footballer but I can imagine the stuff that Joey Barton said about Gareth Barry always being the manager's 'yes man' could be true of Oakley too. I know some people think he gets a raw deal from some LCFC fans but for me personally he's been steady at best, happy to earn good money for little return. If he is mates with Tisdale he can go and be someone else's 'yes man' now.
ozleicester Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Solid Pro, deserving of our respect and as mentioned may still have a small part to play for us.
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Has irritated me at times, but that's more the manager who's decided to pick him, rather than Oakley himself. Had a lot to answer for when we went down but, like Howard and unlike others, he stuck around to make swift retribution. I didn't like what he did at Derby but, after his time there it's to be expected, I'd expect an Ex-Fox to be similarly respectful (Savage you nob.) After some of his performances last season I don't think keeping him match fit, in case we need him over the course of the season, is a bad idea. Might not see him in a City shirt again though.
Ric Flair Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Some decent English vineyards down near Exeter......
paddy Agyemang Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Good player on his day n we will never forget the Hereford free kick and forest away goals mate they were crackers
Lambert09 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 what did he do at Derby? How have i missed this haha
Corky Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 He clapped the Derby fans before us, which was slightly understandable as he was getting plenty of stick from our fans.
Fox92 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 Good luck to him. Always liked him throughout his career at Southampton and Derby, I was pleased when we signed him. Sometimes does my head in, as with most players, but overall he is a professional and scored some good goals for us. Best of luck.

Good luck to the guy, solid pro, but he cost us far far more than he was worth.

Everyone at my school supported Saints and the majority had Oakley on the back of their shirts after Le Tissier retired. They were always banging on about how he should be in the England squad. He been a descent servant for us and has no doubt been good for the younger players behind the scenes but he's not exactly going down in our history books. Good on him for bothering to have a go at Exeter and help a friend.

Oh he is, but not for the reasons he'd have wanted. No other captain had led us down to the third level before he did. Plus he was captain for half a season at least of the worst Premier league side in history. But good luck to him at Exeter. I'm sure he can do a reasonable job there.
gazfox9 Posted 30 September 2011 Posted 30 September 2011 I won't be shedding any tears over this news. A lot of people keep saying about how good it was of him to hang around when we were relegated, my opinion is that a) Nobody else actually wanted him, and b) He was on such a cushty contract why would he want to leave. Without wanting to sound too bitter, he's one of the most average captains I've ever seen down the city. As has been mentioned already, no other skipper has led us to the 3rd tier too. Maybe just a co-incidence. Anyway, another sign the clubs moving forward by clearing more deadwood.

The ones I know said they only ever thought he was average and were not too sad to see him depart in spite of how many appearances he had made
