Mark_w Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Why did you go if the games didn't matter? Same reason I went to Shrewbury and Sunderland in pre-season, because I enoy watching football whether the result matters or not. But I'd always prioritise league games because they're more important.
marty78 Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 I'm with ya... Nobody has answered the question of whether they would sign him NOW based upon what they've seen. I will Col and the answer is an emphatic no. However every decision is easy with hindsight and I am surprised he has been as disappointing as he has. I for one wasn't complaining at the time he signed.
Babylon Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 I know I come across as critical of him, but again I stress I would like him to get another chance.
dmayne7 Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 I'm with ya... Nobody has answered the question of whether they would sign him NOW based upon what they've seen. I would never have signed him, I can't stand the guy and his attitude is a joke. Not doubting that he will score goals but i'd much rather the other strikers are given a chance
marbelladave Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Exactly what I said straight after Sundays game. Playing this way COULD bring out the best of Beckford. However, you can debate all you like, I simply don't think Nige wants to keep him. Why? Value for money... It's important now people. Beckford has never shown he warrants being paid anything like 30+ k a week. Nowhere near. Sadly it looks rather like relations between Beckford and the management have deteriorated badly. Forget all the rumours, the reality is that he can not get a game and is lucky to get into the squad, that tells you all you need to know about what the management team think of him...... The fact is he is surplus to requirements and too expensive to leave hanging around kicking his heels...... Hmm, I don't know if I agree, at Leeds he was most successful playing off a big man, at least that is what I have been lead to believe on here, I don't remember Leeds playing particularly creative football, but had some good wingers and Beckford and Becchio up front. I can't remember off the top of my head, but how many of Beckford's goals came from being played in with a neat little ball from the midfield, and how many were from crosses or long balls? Genuine question, I can think of some headed goals, some scrappy finishes, some first time shots when it fell to him in the area. I can also think of him being played in and scuffing it terribly, or blasting it high and wide. I'm sure this is probably down to my awful memory, more than anything else, but I don't know where this idea he suits fast passed flowing creative football comes from, to me he is an instinctive striker, if the ball drops to him under pressure he will get a snap shot away, but I don't think he is that good at making space for himself and scoring when he has the time to think about it. True enough mon capitaine, the Beckford/Becchio combination is well known but the views expressed on this forum are that he would be at his best if we played passing football with the ball on the floor, exactly as we have done in the last couple of games. Just pointing out the irony of the situation, ie we are beginning to play the type of football that many on here think would suit his game but he can't get a game and most people on here want him gone rather than given the chance to play.......
yorkie1999 Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 I'm with ya... Nobody has answered the question of whether they would sign him NOW based upon what they've seen. Simon Grayson would sign him and he's a manager of a team that just hammered Blackpool, a team we only just beat with a dodgy penalty at home.
Happy Fox Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Sell him and bring in Max Clayton one of the best young English talents plays for Crewe Alex.
Jace Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 <p> I would never have signed him, I can't stand the guy and his attitude is a joke. Not doubting that he will score goals but i'd much rather the other strikers are given a chance What has been bad about his attitude?
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Simon Grayson would sign him and he's a manager of a team that just hammered Blackpool, a team we only just beat with a dodgy penalty at home. 2.5 mill, on a 4 yr contract and alleged 30k a week? Not a chance... That was my original point.
Leicester Lass Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 I'm with ya... Nobody has answered the question of whether they would sign him NOW based upon what they've seen. I would, without doubt. I think there's probably 23 Championship managers that would have him in their squad in a heartbeat too (neglecting wages etc). The way we're playing at the minute is absolutely ideal for Beckford. I think he and Knockaert could potentially be lethal. Is it a coincidence that Nugent scoring run has coincided with Knockaert getting a decent run in the team? Let's remember Knockaert played two fantastic passes to gift clear cut one on ones to Vardy against Hull, only to see horribly poor attempts hit straight at the goalkeeper. If we are going to play with the formation as we did on Sunday, which produces passes which strikers can run onto behind a defence, then Pearson is absolutely crazy to not be considering Beckford for selection.
Guest ttfn Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Cup goals are irrelevant in establishing whether he is good enough at this level. I don't see how people don't understand this. We all know Beckford can score goals against crappy teams. He's shown nothing to suggest he can do it on a regular basis in this division. And yet people continue to blindly suggest he'll come good. There is no evidence for this. None.
davieG Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Pearson has his favourites and plays them whether they are good or not. I've heard that argument about ever manager we've ever had.
Corky Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Pearson has his favourites and plays them whether they are good or not. I've heard that argument about ever manager we've ever had. What manager doesn't play their favourites?
Ashley Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 K then taking this approach probably being a twat about it too. He's scored in the Premiership how many times = more than good enough to score in the Championship. Half of Foxestalk slag him off because of his rumoured wages... We have one of the best strikers in the league on our books for god sake.
Bert Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 2.5 mill, on a 4 yr contract and alleged 30k a week? Not a chance... That was my original point. £34k to be a bit more accurate.
davieG Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 What manager doesn't play their favourites? If by favourites it means those that are playing as instructed and putting in the effort then they all do. If it means those he fancies, goes out clubbing or on holiday with etc then I don't know of any.
RowlattsFox Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Question is are we a better team team with or without beckford? On the evidence of last season and this season so far, I would say say without. Are we missing him? At the moment, no. Our problems are away from home and apart from blackpool beckford as been generaly awful away from home. Beckford has had chances, its not as though pearson has just come in and demoted him. Whatever happens we can't afford to have a player on his kind of wages just floating around. It wouldn't suprise me if top has told pearson, if you're not going to play him then force him out.

If it means those he fancies, goes out clubbing or on holiday with etc then I don't know of any. Exactly. Pearson has given Beckford a fair chance since he came back. Pearson has now decided he's not worth it.

We have one of the best strikers in the league on our books for god sake. He scored 8 times in the Premier League. We're not talking about Yakubu here. DJ Campbell was crap and he scored 13 playing for a far inferior side. Roman Bednar has a comparable Premier League record, and we're all agreed he's awful. Stating that Beckford is "one of the best strikers in the league" is absolutely absurd.
yorkie1999 Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Exactly. Pearson has given Beckford a fair chance since he came back. Pearson has now decided he's not worth it. So why didn't we sell him to huddersfield?

Always makes me laugh, Akinbiyi once bagged 11 in the Premier League as well, doesn't make him proven at that level. Ricketts got 20. People fail to mention Everton would rather play a 4-6-0 formation with Cahill up front than start Beckford.
Mark_w Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 So why didn't we sell him to huddersfield? I imagine because of a dispute over wages. Why was he allowed to travel to Huddersfield, and be in talks with the club minutes before the deadline if Nigel wanted to keep him?
Guest MattP Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 I imagine because of a dispute over wages. I still think Nige was taking the piss, clearly annoyed him so send him up there for a day and pull the plug at midnight.

Or maybe Nige didn't know about him going to Huddersfield, hence his treatment since deadline day...
Jace Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Maybe Grayson pulled the plug on the deal when he saw how poor his first touch was when he picked up the pen to sign
