Harry - LCFC Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 A very good point! In fact you could say that in terms of value for money, Beckfords cup goals, helping us reach the quarter final of the FA Cup, made more money for the club than any of the league goals that were scored! In fact, isn`t Skys logo this year "Every goal matters". Is that not right then? Maybe they should they change it to "Every goal matters, unless it`s in the cup". Money that we squandered on his ridiculously wages that would only be worth paying if we had got promoted and were in the Premiership reaping far greater rewards than those gained in the FA Cup!

smudger63 Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 People care more about the league than the cup so goals scored in the cup are largely neglected by most people. Particularly when teams will so often put 2nd string teams out and not take it seriously. What really matters is goals in the league, is a striker actually contributing to the team by putting the ball in the net to earn us points? If he keeps scoring in the cup then so what? Unless it's in the quarter final of the competition (or maybe 5th round even) then I don't really care how high his tally is in the Capital One/Carling/Worthinghton/Coca-Cola/Franchise Cup. As much is it might be harsh to say it, if you've scored a lot of your goals in a cup then most people will say you aren't really contributing where it matters. Do you know what, maybe it`s because i`m an old git, but the FA Cup means alot to me, and if had the choice of winning the FA Cup, for the first time in our history or getting promoted to the Prem, where realistically our only goal every season will be to stay up, i`d take winning the worlds most famous cup competition.Last years cup run was the bright spot in what was a dreary, run of the mill and disappointing season, and the goals scored along the way mattered, because they kept us dreaming for that bit longer. In fact you could say they kept our season alive for that bit longer too! In 10 years time, when i think back to last season, i will remember the cup run, not the mid table league campaign. I will remember the drubbing we gave Forest, the win against Di canio`s Swindon, the fantastic win at Norwich, and yes, even the drubbing we took at Chelsea, but i will remember it as a great cup run, that i really enjoyed.
Harry - LCFC Posted 26 September 2012 Posted 26 September 2012 Why did we sign Beckford? To get goals. Why did we pay him such high wages? Because with his goals we'd get promoted and we'd get our money back in the Prem. He didn't get us promoted last season (not entirely his fault of course, the team was bad in general) so we are currently paying way over the odds for a player who won't bang in a sufficient number of goals for the amount he is paid! I want him to go, not because I dislike him, but because it is a financially sensible decision for the club.

I like the cup as well but I don't feel we're capable of winning it unless we get promoted and attract higher quality players. I appreciate that Beckford did help to bring us a very enjoyable cup run but I do feel he isn't worth paying that amount of money for unless we get that cash back somehow.

So it`s money over glory then. That`s modern football i suppose, where just being an also ran in the prem, so we get the sky money, is seen as better than the prestige of actually winning a trophy.

We can't afford to waste money is what I meant, Beckford was signed (I think) with Premier League football (and earnings) in mind - We would be able to afford his wages because we'd have a greater income. At present, we are spending a vast amount of money on a player who isn't a superstar at this level. Plus, we don't need Jermaine to have a good run in the cup, he just helped that to come about last season. Getting rid of him would not destroy our chances of an FA Cup quarter final would it?

Think he meant we can't afford to waste it, which is right. We were never going to win the FA Cup either, so any illusion of glory is just that, much the same as unfortunately an FA Cup run this year isn's important, if we have settled down as Premiership side then you can look at cups and glory, like we did under MON.
ozleicester Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Im abit lost now...Is he shit or alright??? Yes

Mark_w Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Get yourself out of babylon'a arse and form your own opinion. He scored 15 goals last season whether you agree or not. They're not "added in" they happened last season. 3 of them came against championship opposition and one of them against the champions of Europe! Guess knockaert or Futacs goals don't count from this season? Could've swore someone said Futacs has scored more recently than beckford, but it was in the cup, so surely we can't go adding that in? Oh **** off, I didn't realise it was a one opinion per person system that was run here. Maybe you should get your head out of 5waller5's arse, or Dangerius Tiger's. (Edit: Or Fourth_Officials ) At the end of the season when we're talking about the number of goals scored by Knockaert and Futacs I won't include their cup goals, and I've never said Futacs has more goals than Beckford. You may think that everyone who thinks Beckford really isn't that good agrees with anything any other poster of the same opinion posts, but that isn't the case. Like for instance, unlike Babylon, I don't think Beckford should be given another chance, because his wages are ridiculous, he's already failed to produce, and we've got two talented young strikers who I'd like to see given a shot instead.

Guest ttfn Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Nobody would be talking about a three win cup run if we'd had success in the league. Beckford was a key reason behind us failing so miserably last season. I liked Sven, but signing Beckford was a colossal fvck up.
Happy Fox Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 And not signing Billy Sharp last January was a colossal f**k up by NP as well, managers make bad signings yes and they also make good ones lets move on now, Beckford will go and someone else will come in.
Mark_w Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 And not signing Billy Sharp last January was a colossal f**k up by NP as well. I was under the impression that Sharp could have come here but chose Southampton instead of us (You know because they were good), at least Pearson didn't make a signing that wasn't really his main traget just because he was desperate (Which is the impression I get from the Maynard/Beckford summer).

Sharp turned us down? He also turned us down when we tried to sign him on loan at the end of August as well. The lad don't want to come here, he never has.

The lad don't want to come here, he never has. ..and who could blame any sensible player for not wanting to join the madhouse that has been LCFC for the last decade, it's hardly surprising we're seemingly having to fork out higher wages to get players to come here all of which has brought us no where nearer to success. Even now there's continual talk and gossip about a managerial change, if I was a professional footballer I'd steer well clear of us.
Babylon Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Do you know what, maybe it`s because i`m an old git, but the FA Cup means alot to me, and if had the choice of winning the FA Cup, for the first time in our history or getting promoted to the Prem, where realistically our only goal every season will be to stay up, i`d take winning the worlds most famous cup competition. But we didn't win it though did we? It was a bright spot because our main striker and most expensive current earner flopped and scored in a whopping 7 games. That's not just down to him though, just as us progressing in the cup is not down to him. Had he been capable of scoring in the league then it might not have been such a "disappointing season". The facts are he could not convert his goalscoring in the cup, into league goals. Why is that? If he is SOOOO good, why couldn't he do the bread and butter of the league? All the talk for 99.99999999% of the year is promotion, not getting a cup run. So he needs to do it in the league, if he scores 30 in the cup and sod all in the league then he's still a bloody flop because he was signed to get us up.
Sods Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Quick question to the Beckford lovers, where would he be playing in this current formation? As he's never changing a game coming on the bench so no point in having him there.
davieG Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Admin message. If you're not a Beckford lover or hater what are doing in this topic? Hang on can one not just be neutral and objective?

dannythefox Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 I really don't know why people are having a go at each other! Beckford has been below par since arriving nobody can say any different it's a fact we don't need him we've got players that will step up to the plate and if he's pissed Pearson off there is defo no going back he might aswell leave!
Captain... Posted 27 September 2012 Posted 27 September 2012 Why did we sign Beckford? To get goals. Why did we pay him such high wages? Because with his goals we'd get promoted and we'd get our money back in the Prem. I want him to go, not because I dislike him, but because it is a financially sensible decision for the club. The question is this, if he had scored 15 goals in the league, and we had still finished 9th, and we still didn't get promoted, and his performances were the same, does that warrant him deserving a place on the bench now? Is his record of 15 in 40 starts good enough? forgetting how or when he scored them, or in what competition, he is, for us, a striker with a goals per starts record of 15/40. The answer is possibly, look at Howard's goal scoring record, it was rubbish, but he was instrumental to the success we had in League one and the following season. Maybe we should stop beating him around the head with his goalscoring record and just assess his contribution to the team as a whole, and whether or not his inclusion in the team or squad will help us win more games, on performances this season the answer is probably not, but is it worth trying to get him back to his best, by trying to play him back to form, based on last season, and the best he has played for us, again the answer is probably not, too much of a risk, and even when he did have a great game last season he would follow it up with a poor one. I would love to see him banging the goals in for Leicester, but I would much rather watch less talented players, Vardy, Waghorn, give their all for the club every game. And not signing Billy Sharp last January was a colossal f**k up by NP as well, managers make bad signings yes and they also make good ones lets move on now, Beckford will go and someone else will come in. How is that a colossal fvck up by NP? We made him an offer, a good offer, probably better than what Southampton offered, but he didn't want to come, short of spunking more money up the wall, what more could NP have done? Admin message. If you're not a Beckford lover or hater what are doing in this topic? Hang on can one not just be neutral and objective? Just stirring.
