Schlupp trial at Manchester United

Recommended Posts

With a view to a permanent deal.

Extremely surprised United have opted for him!

Manchester United have taken the young Leicester City attacker Jeff Schlupp on trial with a view to signing him on a permanent deal.

Schlupp, 20, has been training at Carrington with the permission of his parent club, who have a close relationship with United and have taken players on loan from the Premier League club in the past. The young United defender Michael Keane has recently extended his loan at Leicester and forward Jesse Lingard, another young United player, has just returned from a loan spell there.

Schlupp is relatively inexperienced even in Championship football and has not played in the first team since November. He is a striker who can operate on the left and has also played some games at left-back for the club. He broke into the side last season having played on loan at Brentford in the 2010-2011 season.

A product of the Leicester academy, Schlupp made an immediate impact when he broke through into the first team at the start of last season and scored a hat-trick on his debut away to Rotherham United in the League Cup. He played fairly regularly last season in spite of injuries.

He is a senior Ghana international, his one cap coming in November last year. Previous to that he played junior international football for Germany – he was born in Hamburg before moving to England as a youngster. He underwent knee surgery last season but the club still gave him a new contract until 2015.

There have been a number of players developed at United who have gone to Leicester in recent seasons. The club currently have three in their first-team squad: the defender Ritchie De Laet and the midfielders Danny Drinkwater and Matty James.

Making our bond with United stronger which isn't the worst thing in the world!

making our bond strong how? They wouldnt take him on trial for the fun of it. They want to see if hes good enough to buy. And if they feel he is good enough to buy then Pearson somewhere along the line, isnt utilizing him to his obvious potential

He is a LB not a striker. I saw no real talent when he played up front but bags of it when he played LB. I dont know why he / other people want to put him out there as a striker. If he wants to rot in Man Utd reserves, then thats up to him but no fame, fortune or money would make me choose bench warming over football

My bet is they'll develop him as a left-back, perhaps as an eventual replacement for Evra. Compare the two and they're remarkably similar.

Both have pace, good control, are strong in the tackle, have good engines and are keen and potentialy effective when getting forward.

Indeed for all his years in the game, Evra seems to get in the box as often as some of the forwards - and has been scoring or going close to scoring regularly.

Gary Neville was similar and what is there is nothing to stop Schlupp developing the same way?

Look at Konchesky by comparison. He's a keen tackler but not especially quick which means he gets exposed at times and he's a keen attacker but doesn't have anything like the recovery power to get deep into the box consistently.

Barring injury - or being shunted into the sidings - there's no reason at all why Schlupp shouldn't emerge and many acknowledged it when he did get his chance at left-back.

It's interesting too that there is mention of Fletcher. Schlupp has not appeared in central midfield very often but when he did he did he looked very comfortable, tidy and effective. It may be that he will evolve as an alternaitve in either position. Certainly Ferguson seems to like his players to have positional flexibility.

I reckon he could easily be developed into a Premier League left back, shown massive potential even if it has only been in about 3 games. Evra won't last forever. Could be something in that? He'll never be a United striker IMO.
