Do you work in the industry @BirdieMachine? Some great knowledge there

Hi mate, I dont work in the industry but im lucky that I know some excellent people who do, and having played decently for a long time always hovering around 1 handicap, ive had access to some really good coaches too who have the tools like trackman to really delve into whats going on within the swing.

Professional fitting is key. Without it you can go down some pretty ugly rabbit holes with equipment. Having a fitter that can take time to explain what the effect of changing different aspects of a club can produce is also golden.

Whilst equipment cant fundamentally change what a player does, it can certainly work better with the technique a person has and mitigate some of the problems they have.

I had a set of irons one time where the fitter did a few things to them that intuitively youd think "thats going to make my clubs worse".... the loft angles were bent a degree weaker (means a shorter ball right?), and added 4g of extra head weight (will swing slower as a result right?)

What actually happened was it put my spin numbers into an ideal window where I was optimising my carry through having the right amount of spin (not too high or too low), which in turn game me more stopping power into the green, and i could also sense the extra mass of the clubhead, which in turn improved the contact I made. centre strikes had a solid feel to them and it was easier to get the middle of the club onto the ball, time after time. Which produced a little more ballspeed.

So having someone who can really tap into this with you, whos seen lots of swings and knows how to really delve into how to optimise what you personally do in the swing is really vital.

Getting there! 5 counting rounds in a month and two wins, we take that! Being more hydrated and finding more comfort in my putting has made a world of difference.

Very common issue that one.

Without getting all technical you most likely hit your 3 wood straight because your angle of attack is more level.

Drivers tend to be pegged up high, and to get the "most" out of the driver swinging up on the ball. Problem is when you swing up, youre also swinging to the left all things being equal. So if you stand absolutely laserbeam square at the target, but hit up on the ball say 3 degrees, youre actually ALSO swinging to the left, because the club has gone past the low point of the swing. Its a phenomenon called "D-Plane" (scary aint it).

Shorter driver shafts are definitely a good option. Playing a longer driver shaft might give you a couple of mph of swing speed but all bets are off if you are missing the middle of the face. Far better to have a more consistent impact position.

Surely then, (and I’m completely immersing myself in what you’re saying and am reading it closely) the way to counteract this would be to tee the ball in the middle of the stance so the ball is at the lowest plane of the driver swing?

I cut my driver down from 45.75 inches to 44 inches yesterday. Re-gripped it and took it to the range.

The difference in dispersion from the old length shaft is massive. I was hitting the 50y wide fairway I made up on the range shot after shot. The occasional toe'y or low strike or one that trickled into the left rough, but they'd all be in play and I wasn't fading any of them way right.

I can now hopefully step up to the tee confident I'm not gonna lose it right or pull it left! Game changer hopefully.

I had my Sim driver set at standard 10.5 up until a couple of months ago. Was only hitting it 225 ish yards. My 3 wood was going 250! I’d always been reluctant to de loft it though because I believe it creates even more spin (I’m still guilty of the odd slice)

A bloke I was in a comp with strongly recommended I did reduce the loft. I’m hitting it 260 ish, with the occasional 350 yards drive on a downhill par 5 fairway at my course 🤣

I wish I’d done it sooner

We've booked a week in a lovely little cottage on the east coast of Scotland at the end of the month.

I'll basically be playing links golf every morning whilst the Mrs and kids do something else until I join up with them at lunchtime.

Can't fvcking wait. So picturesque and beautiful to play golf up there. Even if the wind is at about 60mph.

It's great when it's gusting right to left to correct my slice lol

Unfortunately, won't be playing St Andrews...this time anyway. But planning it for the future!

I think Dunbar will be the highlight. A qualifying venue for the Open. £95 a round there, by far the most expensive, but I'll probably go round in 130, so get value for money!

I'm staying in Gullane at the beginning of September,  playing all three courses there,  along with Craigielaw,  Dunbar and on the way up Goswick.  Need to be back on my A game by then,  or they'll be wanting to charge me extra.  Where else are you playing?

I’ve played a lot up there. You”ll enjoy Dunbar. It’s been a while since I played there but from memory there are some industrial skylines but also some great holes where you get right down by the sea

Not totally sure on the others yet, I don't want to spend an absolute fortune.

I was up there about a month ago and played Winterfield Golf Club, which is in Dunbar, it was absolutely beautiful, right on the sea, looking across the Firth of Forth with views of Bass Rock and the Isle of May.

That was only £30 odd quid for the round, so I'll definitely go there again.

We're actually staying in Dunbar, so if anyone has any recommendations, they'd be appreciated.

I’ve played Dunbar, North Berwick, Gullane 2,  Luffness, Royal Burgess and Dalmahoy in that area. Also done Fife, Ayrshire and Inverness up there. We stayed in Edinburgh when we played Dunbar so can’t help you with accommodation/eating out there but you are spoilt for choice with the golf. As you know, you’ll have a great time.

I've just seen that St Andrews does a ballot to play the Old Course 48 hours in advance, every day.

I'm so tempted!

Played it a long time ago. Is it about £250 to play now. Under the radar perhaps 🤔

The Mrs said "HOW MUCH?"

I think it's £270, but you'd pay that to play football at Wembley.

Tell her she can caddie if she goes halves with you 🤣

Well worth it regardless and particularly if you play ok

Had probably my best 9 holes of the year earlier, including an almost hole in one plus  my first eagle in god knows how long. Shot 40 on a par 34. Which for my handicap (20 is decent)

The nearly HI1 was a 145yd shot going short left that took a wicked bounce right, rattled the flagstick and stopped 12 inches away from the hole :P

The eagle was me driving a 250yd green, leaving a 10 footer which I knocked right in the middle:celebrate:

My driver was on fire today. Couldn't hit it anything but straight or a slight draw. Cutting the length down a bit has definitely done the trick!

St Andrews is, without doubt, a great experience,  but to get the most out of it you want to be staying in town in my opinion..  If I was you I'd keep my money in my pocket to use on a later date,  preferably for a golfing trip with mates.

Started going to the driving range a bit with my housemate, really enjoying it so far and will start looking for a cheap beginner set.

Only issue I've found is a small pain in my rib when swinging now :sweating:

Dramatic play-off right now between Zalatoris & Straka.

Good to see Zalatoris finally get over the line and not just as I'd bet on him!  Always good to lose the best player not to win a PGA  tour event monkey off your back.

He's one hell of a player.
