Pearson is already planning for next season

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson said he has plenty of work to do in the summer to get the squad in shape for next season.

The dust has barely settled on their cruel play-off semi-final exit at Watford on Sunday but Pearson is already planning for City's next bid for promotion, and says he knows what needs to be done.

The work to shape City's squad has already begun and Pearson said they are trying to move on several players who no longer feature in his plans. Bolton and City are in talks over a possible move for Jermaine Beckford to the Reebok Stadium, and midfielder Neil Danns is also expected to move away from the club after spending most of the campaign on loan at Bristol City and Huddersfield.

There could be several others heading for the exit door as Pearson looks to build on the squad he has put together during the past year.

Several of the squad are also about to enter the final year of their contracts, including Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Paul Konchesky, Sean St Ledger, Lloyd Dyer and David Nugent, while striker Martyn Waghorn is out of contract at the end of June.

"There is a certain amount of work to be done in terms of getting the balance right for the squad moving forward," said Pearson.

"We still have a number of players who, in an ideal world, we would like to move on. Unfortunately, we still have to deal with those players at the moment.

"But, with a bit of luck, we will be able to free up that situation by moving a few on.

"It is early at the moment and I have to see what the balance of the squad is when we turn our minds to the next season.

"I certainly have my thoughts on how we move forward but it is dependent on a few criteria."

Pearson admitted it had been a frustrating season in many ways, but said he feels the club is in a stronger position than a year ago.

He was also unhappy with the level of negativity that had surfaced during City's difficult spells this season.

"It has been an unpredictable season but we have had some very good spells," he said. "I think there has been a disproportionate amount of negativity spoken about us at times. I would be the first to concede that we had a long spell of not being able to win games, which left us in the position of having to rely on results elsewhere on the final day to get into the play-offs.

"But I do think, for the most part, the players applied themselves very well this season. The club is in a much better position than 12 months ago."

Guess there aren't any better managers available this preseason that will come here whilst there are Premier vacancies available, oh well, will just have to see if he can learn from the mistakes of this season.

What happens now - will all Pearson haters finally jump off that cliff or continue moaning and bitching as if there was no tomorrow?

Sadly, they're too smart for their own good and will highly likely go for the latter option. I can see it coming.

I fear for the worst - WE'RE DOOMED, DOOMED!!!

That made me laugh too. Not very diplomatic of him is it?

Would be interesting to know when certain players contracts are up, surely the likes of Wellens and Gally must be about up?

What criteria is that then?

Money presumably. If we can shift Beckford, Danns, SSL, Wellens, Gallagher etc. then there's a shedload of cash freed up to bring in new players who he wants.

Yeah would be the obvious next question in an interview. I assume being able to shift some of the deadwood will be one factor. Perhaps backing from the board another.

The bit at the end pisses me off. He should take responsibility, 3 wins in 18 or whatever it was is relegation form.

Also, we've had to put up with hoofball for the third part of the season so that's why there has been so much negativity!

It's not that outrageous or odd.

Pearson is still in a job and will think about it until he's told otherwise. Naturally, if he assumes he'll be in charge, he'll want to be prepared from now. But he could still leave, nothing is confirmed yet.

Makes me laugh when people say like "how can he comment when they've not made a decision on his future yet".

Open your eyes.

None of those players will want to sign a new contract. Being the first year of FFP people on decent contracts in this league will get a shock when they are made new offers, contracts will most likely be on massively reduced terms and people will want to be on free transfers so they can hopefully get deals to clubs able to offer large contracts.

Unless they are willing to commit to a common cause, e.g. another season bound for promotion. You never know...

This is the problem of being irresponsibly managed by a conman & board who fell for it, for a period... And with FFP ceilings this issue is critical to us being able to continue the rebuild.

Good to hear him sounding aggressive about shipping out the crap.

Not so good to hear him complaining about negativity. One of the worst runs of form in the history of the club, yet he kept his job and the fans supported the club til the last minute. What more did he want? Everyone to be sucking up to him while his defence concedes yet another shit goal after shambolic defending from a corner? People praising his atrocious signings in vardy and futacs when we were struggling for goals? Everyone cheering when he brought Kane on for yet another completely pointless cameo?

Get a grip Nigel ffs. You're lucky to be in a job with some of the crap your team served up this season.

Why do people keep harping on about FFP?  The amount of loop holes will be massive at the moment.  Plus if we spend big again in the summer and we go up next season, there is nothing the football league can do as we will be in the Prem.  All the FFP rubbish will do is edge teams in to voting for a Premier second tier which will in turn knacker the clubs in the bottom 2 divisions even further.

If our owners want to spend big amounts again in the summer then I am sure they will and already know where to cheat the new regulations.

This is meant to be a thread about him planning for the summer, not another let's sack Pearson thread. The amount of people on this thread that want him to go is ridiculous, what a bunch of idiots.

Anyway, I'm glad he is making plans, so good on him for it. Think he will look to sell Beckford and Danns first, then maybe concentrate on selling Wellens and maybe St Ledger if his wages are a problem, then he will more than likely clear out the rest, like Gallagher, Vardy and Futacs.

Wellens and Gally I think were both put on contracts to 2014 by Sven, so one more year.

There are going to be some goodbyes over the summer reading that.

Gallagher, Wellens, Beckford, Danns, St. Ledger, Waghorn, Vardy and Futacs are probably the favourites to go with Konchesky probably not far behind.

This is going to be a very busy summer in terms of transfer activity, as we can't have all these outgoings without significant numbers of incoming players.

We need a new left-back or two, a combative midfielder and another striker who can be relied upon to score goals. Vitor would be a superb capture as well given how he did here last time and his release from Benfica.
