THey seem to have said how far can we push this, Quenibourough, Willoughby Waterlees, Thurcaston, Cropston, Little Bowdon are as un- City as you could think of.

It's all down to wanting the City to build houses in these places because they've been given too many to fit into the City. Why not just allocated more houses to the existing villages and towns, spreading it out so that it's hardly noticeable and would justify improving their available facilities , transport and leisure option. Such as more local stations Ivanhoe, Kibworth, Blaby etc.

Sadly I think there's some political motivation hidden in it as it pisses off a lot of non-Labour voters.

I wonder if they will go ahead with the 2027 mayoral elections and whether us 'non' city city folk will get to vote.

It would be a perfect demonstration of democracy if we couldn't,  to allow another labour mayor to be voted in for 4 years. They have no chance now that they have pulled a load of county voters in.

Since then, the government has released the results of a consultation revealing only 7% of respondents said they felt positive about creating a larger city local authority, while 87% said they felt negative about it.

Pretty damning results really.

It could act as an unofficial 'referendum? All those affected by these changes totally abstain from taking part.

If they can stop 'minimarts' from growing in numbers to rural towns it'd be a good start...

If they are in the rural areas, how many are happily trading in the city? Same problem and the same scale I expect.

A tale of two cities. Was chatting to someone from Stoke (a low bar,. admittedly) who spoke in glowing terms of their trip to Leicester this weekend.

Walked along my usual river route into town this morning towards West bridge and was confronted (up the slip path to join st Nicholas circle) with 20 disgusting homeless junkies sat down blocking the path. I had to step over them as they wouldn't move. I know people like to sympathise with those with 'street lifestyles'  but these were truly vile people.. and intimidating even for a fella who's used to that part of the city and the characters therein

r/london - Income tax paid by residents of each London borough vs other major UK cities

Just saw this the tax paid is crazy low in Leicester.

Just looked at the population of Leicestershire and its 580,000 so that means the the tax intake is just £931 per person. You can't do jack shit with that.

Essentially if you have a good job, you want to get out of the city boundary. So working in Leicester but living in Oadby wouldn't be included in this figure.

The population will be the lower figure of 368k. If you look at Sheffield, which is a 'city' the council looks at, includes a large rural area hence its figures are skewed high on this list.

Its one of the justifications for the the Citys expansion.

Tax take per head would be a more useful graph.

It’s going off City Council/Unitary population statistics. It says so at the top and bottom of the page.So roughly 380k in Leicester’s case.It doesn’t look like the list has taken into account London Weighted wages and as Kenny pointed out, towns like Bradford take in some pretty affluent areas miles out the City district.

Still quite damning reading for East Midlands if not unsurprising.

Would be interested to know the real unemployment figures in each borough.

Not the made up ones. How many residents work in the black market etc.

It's rife and unwanted (by me certainly), but you can't block it except for the "show me less like this" button then the message "got it, you will not see content like this for "a few weeks" then it starts to reappear. It's insidious. Once you click on something of interest such as "women's fashion" (as my wife did) for example, that has something else hidden behind it, you're screwed.

The only solution is probably to kill your account. I've got quite a few FB friends still and what they put on there is dwarfed by the absolute nonsense being churned out by engagement farmers.

I'm still getting bombarded by stuff deliberately winding people up about electric vehicles (often accompanied by a fun AI picture of someone plugging a charging cable into the door handle of their car that's in the middle of the road) and Reform related stuff that is often wildly inaccurate and talking as if Farage will be PM in a matter of weeks

Yeah those places you name are definitely county. I can understand an argument for pushing out to the A46, taking in Birstall, thurmaston etc. But not tiny villages in the sticks.

Really is a p-take when they waste time and effort doing a consultation they intend to ignore. While I support Burnham's move to take power back to regions and localities, those regions and localities can't be allowed to ignore the public view when they ask for it.

May be an image of child and text that says "A Tale of Two Councils Leicestershire County Council vs Leicester City Council childrens Services Performance Leicestershire County Council Leicester City Council OUTSTANDING Childrens Services NEEDS IMPROVEMENT Childrens Services Bettersupport Better support for children Stronger family services Safer, brighter futures Inconsistent support Gapsi family services Greater risk for vulnerable children Children in Leicestershire County deserve the best and that's what they get in the County."

Stuff like this in not sure is that helpful (not blaming your intent just giving a view on the content). They are very different areas with different issues for councils to deal with, with the meagre funding they have these days. Many city councils have things quite tough (not a selling point for those areas heading in).

As already mentioned it probably omits people who work there but live elsewhere. Very low figures for the City of London too, to demonstrate this.

Incase people weren't aware, the charity that runs the Leicester Comedy festival has now gone bankrupt and closed business, so unless somebody else steps in to do it, the Leicester comedy festival won't be running any more :(

Devastating news about the comedy festival. Really hope it gets taken on, must create work in the city and give people something to go to.
