Coventry to play in Northampton

I'm not buying into this stuff really. I find it absolutely ****ing hilarious. If we went bust, oh well, life goes on, start up in the lower leagues and I'll still be there. Life goes on, don't sob over CCFC going out of business, won't be the first or the last.

We seem to have quite a difference in opinion on this one. "Oh well" is certainly not the phrase I'd be using if my club collapsed. Even so, life does go on (eventually) and yes eventually it'd be ok.

However I get the impression that the chap I was talking to would be happy for Coventry to be removed permanently. I can just about accept a club going out and having to slowly build up again but to rob someone of their club permanently is simply intolerable as I see it.

Ricoh Arena owners threaten Northampton with legal action

The operator of the Ricoh Arena has threatened legal action over Coventry City's plans to play home games in Northampton from this season.

The Sky Blues announced they will play home games at Northampton Town's Sixfields Stadium for three years.

Arena Coventry Ltd (ACL) said it had a pre-existing contract in place with Coventry to host matches and issued a notice of intent to Northampton Town.

The Cobblers said the threatened action was "without any legal merit".

Coventry City, who have been in administration since March, plan to stage home matches 34 miles away while they look at options for a building a new stadium.

A spokesman for ACL, which is in dispute with the League One club over rent, said if Northampton allow the matches to take place, Coventry will be in breach of a contract.

Ricoh chiefs would then seek to recover costs from the Cobblers, he added.

'Will not be bullied'

The club said in a statement: "Northampton Town Football Club confirms that Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) has threatened the club with legal action in respect of Coventry City FC playing at Sixfields Stadium.

"The club was approached by Coventry City to play at Sixfields, so that the club could fulfil its fixtures. The Football League has endorsed this arrangement.

"The threatened action by ACL is without any legal merit and is not conducive to the greater good of the game.

"Northampton Town Football Club will not be bullied or threatened."

Nobody from Coventry City was available for immediate comment.

Supporter 'dismay'

ACL said it is meeting with the Football League on Monday.

A spokesman for the company said: "We are fully aware of the dismay of Sky Blues' supporters and of other interested parties, such as various

MPs and the European Parliament, in relation to the recent statement of the Football League.

"We will ensure that the Football League fully appreciates the strength of feeling of everybody that wants to keep the Sky Blues in Coventry."

James Powell, from lawyers Walker Morris, who are representing the company, said: "The lease and licence agreement remain in force even though the club is in administration.

"You would therefore anticipate that the club should be playing its home games at the Ricoh Arena as it is contractually obligated to do."

I'm sorry but the buck starts and ends with CCFC, it has nothing to do with Northampton, I'm sure Northampton don't really want CCFC to play there, don't get me wrong Northampton must be gaining something in terms of rent so would be grateful of that (But will they pay that based on their track record? Would you lend money to someone who has bad credit history?), but I doubt they have demanded or offered CCFC the option of playing there, I would hazard a guess CCFC approached Northampton about the situation (I don't need to hazard a guess it says that happened in the article), really do not understand why Northampton are being threatened here, out of order imo.

Even if the owners of the Ricoh had a 'pre-existing contract' with CCFC to play at Ricoh the problem still remains with CCFC not Northampton and they should not be getting any flack whatsoever.

I think the Ricoh owners are making themselves look the bad guys here.

Coventry are in the wrong, they simply didn't pay the rent for a year and a half/2 years, you can't do that, but I don't quite understand what the Ricoh owners are playing at here.

I honestly don't think the Ricoh needs CCFC there, I mean they are gaining no rent from CCFC, there aren't that many CCFC fans pass through the gate so can't even make money from food and drink sold on matchdays (No doubt that was ran by an outside vendor anyway), the Ricoh has a hotel, casino, a few big exhibition halls, concerts, which they can make money from (Bearing in mind without CCFC there they could hold more exhibitions and concerts) so I honestly don't think the Ricoh needs CCFC as much as CCFC needs the Ricoh.

Well no as an AFC club would be formed. The 7/8k at the Ricoh now are the hardcore and those that would support the AFC club. These are the proper core of a club, not the 30,000 that attended their JPT final hammering lol

If we went bust, id be there in the blue square with the other hardcore.

Sounds impossible to be honest, the idea of converting a speedway track to a football stadium i mean wow! in eight weeks?

berwick30.jpg

Berwick Rangers play at a speedway stadium.

As for 8 weeks? Where has the been mentioned? Did I miss it when reading the article?

The only falling point on the idea would be residents around the area of the stadium, however I dare say Speedway makes more noise than football and the small fanbase CCFC has, as I have mentioned the small fanbase CCFC have wouldn't cause too much traffic problems, e.t.c.

I don't see a problem tbh.

EDIT - Well I do see a problem, money, how are they going to afford a redevelopment of the speedway stadium, how are they going to afford to put a pitch down and get it up to football stadium standard? But as for the idea I don't see a problem.

I think AFC Wimbledon have similar plans for the greyhound/stock car racing stadium there. This wouldn't be the biggest shock ever in the long term.

Knocking up a usable stadium from an existing site in a few months is certainly possible, obviously once all the planning permission and money is sorted. This was Barnet's new stadium at the end of last year, a disused half finished stadium in the middle of a load of football training pitches called 'The Hive' in north London.

Finished stand...

Admittedly its only 1 new stand and 3 refurbished terraces and hospitality building. Shame they got relegated from the league. The Hive consists of this stadium plus about 12 pitches surrounding it, next to Canons Park tube station on the jubilee line. Easy to get to, bugger all pubs nearby.

It's only 78 yards from stand to stand widthwise, and that means the track itself would have to go, so I reckon without major redevelopment, it's a total non starter. Shame, as it's actually on Plough Lane.

They were talking about a total redevelopment I believe.

No idea where the money for that is coming from though.

I hope this deal goes through:

I can't see Coventry surviving if they have to play at Northampton for several years. I think it's a pity if any club has to fold; I know others would be happy to see Coventry's demise but there's always more atmosphere at a local derby (assuming they come up to Leicester's level) than a game at the other end of the country.

Ssn visiting all 92 English league clubs today 1/8/13 by helicopter. I wonder if they will visit CCFC. at the ricoh or sixfields? ;)

This is really bad news, but so long as transport and tickets are priced sensibly they ought to get through this. 34 miles isn't that far.

34 miles isnt far if you have the time and money, but I wouldn't want all our games at meadow lane or the city ground. Chavtastic scum that some of them are I do feel for them. It could so easily have been us. They could seriously cease to exist over this. We cant take the piss if they dont exist.. !

To be honest after going to Northampton on Tuesday, I'd be absolutely livid to have to make that journey every home game.

Yep, seems likely that they will start on a 15 point deduction.   Odds dropped from 14-1 to 4-1 for releation.  Bad times...or happy times whichever your view is i guess

300 season tickets sold, I doubt many will turn up casually. 15 points gone already, I can't see them lasting the season.

Will it be a 23 team League One next season then?

Terribly sad.

They'll probably move a team up to compensate at the end of the season, so yeah.
