Renart Posted 19 August 2013 Posted 19 August 2013 Everything. I have a dark sense of humour though. It's a terrible lie to claim city fans were singing about the kids as well. It's about Mick. Not them. Like last week taking the piss out of Savile/Leeds isn't mocking victims of child abuse. Oh, I get it! If I call you a 'f**cking c**ck' then that is ok just as long as it is 'funny' and I claim I didn't mean to offend you! Oh this is great, why didn't I know about this before? I can say what I want just as long as it is funny. You are a f**cking c**ck! HA HA HA. I'm getting good at this! I think that is funny. Anybody else think that is funny? Disclaimer: whether MattP is actually a f**cking c**ck or not is subjective and I have no opinion on this. The above is just an example based upon his own moral code and, by his own reasoning, cannot therefore be seen as offensive to MattP. (swearing is bad kids, as is peeing on the toilet seat and wearing your mother's underwear). Yeah it's fine, free country. Ok. But the point is this: I have always struggled with being confronted with the argument that this is a 'free country' as you call it; there are reasonable restrictions in place (that I would not change) on what you can and cannot say that 'safeguard' individuals from what they might find offensive and that is an essential part of what makes this a 'free country' in the way that you talk about it. Effectively, by chanting about Saville at the Leeds game and Philpott at the Derby game then you are deliberately bluring the lines between the fan and that abhorrant person. That is the intention, right? You are implying that the person has an association with the club and, therefore, the set of fans and is in some way complicit by association. That is the joke right? The aim is to offend. You hide behind the humour and you hide behind the crowd. Now, maybe you don't get offended by being called/linked to a paedophile or a murderer but people do and I don't blame them because if you actually think about what Saville and Philpott are (a sex offender and someone who burnt down his house with his kids inside) then it isn't actually that funny! And what happens is that the fans from the other side do exactly as you do and they fail to see the individual and, therefore, see all Leicester fans as the same! Boom. It makes no difference whether you find something offensive or not: the idea of a 'free country' is not that a person can say what he/she wants; it is, however, that a person can be protected from prejudice, offence and acts of violence.
Guest MattP Posted 19 August 2013 Posted 19 August 2013 You are thinking far too much into this. It's a ditty sang to wind them up, Philpott has been pictured in his Derby shirt. Far as I'm concerned taking the piss is fair game. You don't. Agree to differ.

Flyfox Posted 19 August 2013 Posted 19 August 2013 Well said. Fortunately, I think it's fair to state that the vast majority if supporters, Leicester or otherwise will wholeheartedly share your opinion. There will always be a small minority who feel justified in banishing their moral code at football or other such events. It's probably down to a feeling of safety in numbers and thus behaviour of the nature that you refer to is rarely conducted on a solo basis. I suppose it's the 'pack instinct'.

It's just because they're *****
Swiss_tony Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 No it isn't its 'recent' and the cause of so much that is/has ruined the game including all seater stadiums and over zealous stewarding/policing. It's got nothing to do with 'PC' it's about not wanting to be treated like potential criminal when you go to the match. Anyone who finds violence funny especially at the football is a fool! Well said davieG.

ADK Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 I'm not really sure why chanting about Philpott to Derby is that bad. You aren't suggesting his actions were good in any way. I find the chants directed at Nigel Clough about his father being dead to be more disgusting.
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 I'm not really sure why chanting about Philpott to Derby is that bad. You aren't suggesting his actions were good in any way. I find the chants directed at Nigel Clough about his father being dead to be more disgusting. Chanting about an alcoholic, homophobic egomaniac who drank himself into an early grave is worse than chanting about the senseless deaths of six innocent children at the hands of their father? I see why it would have more impact given his son is on the touchline but I think Brian Clough is a more acceptable target than the Philpott kids. NB: This doesn't mean I'm condoning either, I think both are reprehensible.

Guest MattP Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 That makes it okay then does it I think so, it's taking the piss out of the Derby fans as a right scumbag has a connection to their football club, I don't see it as mocking the deaths of children. If people do then so be it, I can't do anything about that.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 I text my Derby supporting mate "where's your philpott gone" with a picture of the old sex obsessed rotter in his Derby shirt, after reading the comments on here and he thought it was fantastic.

The fact your mate found it fantastic would worry me more than the chant.
Finnaldo Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 The fact your mate found it fantastic would worry me more than the chant. It's The Big John Steader. I wouldn't be surprised about any element of his life.
SystonFox Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 The fact your mate found it fantastic would worry me more than the chant. It's TBJS though.... If he has any mates I wonder what the fvck tickles their fancy! Warped isn't the word!

DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 They must be ecstatic. Now how did I know you would pipe up, sunshine?
Flyfox Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 Really? Im sure you would argue so ferociously if you overheard a few lads sharing a joke about it down the pub. Is it that you feel safer behind your keyboard? I'm not quite sure what your point is. If you're asking would I openly object to such behaviour then, yes, depending on circumstances; if you're point is that I wouldn't pipe up if my personal safety would be in jeopardy as a result, then no, of course not. I'm not sure what the 'hiding behind a keyboard' refers to. I've provided my opinion on a subject discussed on an Internet based forum how else would I put my thoughts across?
Burmesefox Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 There's some fvcking melts in this thread. I wasn't there but I gaurentee it was nothing more than a few slaps and missed thrown punches. Some of the vocabulary used in this thread would make you believe that a full scale bloody riot kicked off. It's simple, raging youth hormones coupled with a sense of identity that football teams create will mean conflict. The police are there to contain it and do it to good effect because deep down everyone is scared for seeing the scenes of the 80's re-emerge. It's not worth arguing about it, because FV has been completely found out and the offences connected to it in the modern day are next to null. (Trust me, I wrote a dissertation on it, it's bloody hard to find cases) Jesus, you'd think there was a sudden re-emergence of rising foot soldiers! melts???? jesus, you a cockney?
broughtonblue Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 We get so many posts on here about there being no atmosphere at matches these days. Then when a bit of atmosphere is created (all be it by offending opposition fans with chants, in my opinion the best way to get an atmosphere going) you all throw your toys out the pram! When opposition supporters sing 'your support is f...ing sh.t' its meant to inspire a reaction, not worry that they have targeted you personnaly as being sh.t. Take it as what it is, and dont worry and cry/moan about it.
Stadt Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 This thread is one of the best I've seen on foxestalk for all of the wrong reasons
