Parafox Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 There is a wide range of age and experience amongst us, the FT posters. I was wondering what pearls of wisdom you have acquired in the university of life that others might benefit from. It doesn't need to be profound. Simple experiences can teach many things.
MikeyT Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Don't accept anything less than you deserve. Don't be walked over Fight and stand up for what is worth fighting for. Dare to dream. Wow that's deep for this time of the morning.
Vlad the Fox Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Don't ask someone to do something you're not Prepared to do yourself. Treat others as you'd expect to be treated yourself. As above, don't let people laugh or put you off your dreams. Be yourself.
Zingari Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Don't look to FoxesTalk for wisdom or advice. The more you learn the more you realise how little you know.
Guest MattP Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Travel, it's the best education you can get. Stand your ground. Help out people when you are in countries that has real poverty. Avoid arguing with the devoutly religious. If you have a woman you are deeply in love with do everything to keep her. Don't worry about things, the real worries you will get in life spring up on you randomly out of the blue. Take a chance in trying to start a business you will enjoy, if you fail so be it, but there is nothing worse than not knowing what the outcome could have been. Have a good social life, eat well. Don't obsess with being stick thin, look after your good friends, love your family, stay as close to your siblings as possible. Do these and happiness comes easily.
Zingari Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Travel, it's the best education you can get.(This doesn't include going to away matches) Stand your ground. (only if you are really sure you are correct and can win) Help out people when you are in countries that has real poverty. (except UK) Avoid arguing with the devoutly religious. If you have a woman you are deeply in love with do everything to keep her.(Be sure she feels the same or it's kidnapping or stalking) Don't worry about things, the real worries you will get in life spring up on you randomly out of the blue. Captain... Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Operation Ivy said it best: "All I know is that I don't know nothing!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HtUnubXAO4 That appears to Include grammar, but the sentiment is still valid.
Guest MattP Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 just a few minor amendments Matt Wouldn't expect anything else
Fox92 Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Don't take people you love, and admire, for granted.
Jon the Hat Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Make sure you are not spending your life trying to make others happy. They are responsible for them, and you for you.
leicsmac Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Don't take ANYTHING for granted, come to that. Life doesn't have balance - hard work is a way of getting prosperous but it's in no way a guarantee of it. There's more than one way to be successful and happy. Travel. Forge your own path through life. Keep your good friends close, they're the family you have chosen. Oh, and don't trust authority unless they've given you a damn good reason to do so - they're out for themselves as much as anyone else is.
Rincewind Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 The more you learn the more you realise how little you know. I like this one. I will add the more you want to know about the little you know. All the above posts. Mine would be don't let power and ambition destroy relationships with friends and relatives. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Keep money worries to a minimum Put health before possessions Love and respect yourself Don't take life too serious When feeling down remember someone somewhere is feeling worse. Don't generalise Enjoy life you only get one stab at it Don't join a religious cult in order to gain favour from the Gods. They are in your head. Don't support Forest.
DennisNedry Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Make the most of something good before it's gone.
Finnegan Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Make sure you are not spending your life trying to make others happy. They are responsible for them, and you for you. What a Tory.
MooseBreath Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Society provides the illusion of a solid framework which doesn't actually exist. There are no rules except those which you set for yourself. Almost everyone (including you) is too consumed by their own pursuit of gratification to really care about anyone else. This should be liberating. Nobody is watching. Do what you want. The exception to the above is your immediate family. They are the only people you can rely on to be there for you in your darkest hour. Do not, under any circumstances, treat this relationship lightly, and be sure to hold up your end of the bargain. Love is fleeting. Enjoy it while it lasts. But remember that perfect relationships don't exist. In the long term it will be the cold practicalities of life which determine whether your relationship succeeds or fails. Keep this is mind when looking for a wife, but then dive in head first anyway. It's fun, and there's no time for fannying around. Apply a fundamental dignity to all aspects of your life. Examples include: maintain your health, maintain your appearance, be able to provide, don't do things you don't want to do just to fit in, keep your house clean, don't mess with people's feelings, don't watch crap tv. Money will not buy happiness, but it will buy options. Learn everything you can about managing your finances. Run the numbers on how much you need to put away to retire comfortably at a reasonable age. When you've finished shutting yourself, put a plan in place and stick to it. Put the pursuit of financial independence ahead of short time consumerist pleasures. Fvck the Jones'. They will retire to poverty. Make the act of delaying gratification a form of gratification. And if that works, realise you can convince yourself of pretty much anything, and then use that to your advantage.
goose2010 Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Always stick with the 'Work to Live not Live to work'
Rincewind Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 What a Tory. If you are happy then encourage those less happy than yourself to find their own path to happiness. You will then be even happier.
Rocket-Ron Posted 29 August 2013 Posted 29 August 2013 Wagon wheels are still the same size as they were when you were young (probably). And they still taste like shit

I agree with Moose... >>feels faint<< Edit: re-read the above, slightly contradictory in that his theme seems to be "respect others"
Parafox Posted 29 August 2013 Author Posted 29 August 2013 History never repeats itself. Man always does. Plenty more fish in the sea is a fallacy. If people annoy you, shout at them in your head. Sticks and stones won't break your bones unless you're an Islamist Being called useless really does hurt but use that pain to prove them wrong. Your children will often make you proud, but they will make you worried more often
