21st Century Fox Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 I've heard of quite a few people who are giving up on Homeland lately and it got me thinking of shows I've given up on before they've reached their conclusion. The only one I can think of recently that I've given up on was The Walking Dead. I truly grew to hate that show, I didn't bother watching it after the mid-season break in season 2. In hindsight I probably would've/should've given up on Dexter after the Trinity killer season as it was as gratifying as eating kitchen roll after that. How about you?
Unabomber Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Most recently White Collar. I wanted to like it, but something just wasn't right about it and it got annoying.
Vlad the Fox Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Orphan black. Though I've downloaded them on iplayer I doubt I'll watch them now. Good idea for the story but why oh why do they hire bad American actors and then tell them to do English? It sounds crap.
Mack Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 I'm watching 'Just Good Friends' at the moment, yes I am that decrepit. I never saw all of series 3 back in 1986 and am making up for it now.
RobHawk Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 The vast majority of US "hit shows" go on to long. they are more interested in $$$ than producing an outstanding bit of TV. Walking dead was a great example of that. Season 1 = Getting from A to B whilst avoiding lots of zombies, Season 2 = Getting from b to C whilst avoiding alot of zombies. For all its initial merit it was ruined by dragging it on. Prison Break is another one - How many prisons can one guy break out of. It was ridiculous!
Vlad the Fox Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 The X factor takes over sat night tv. Don't like it but I can just about stomach the auditions (the mrs has it on) and what is the point of the Sunday show? Even the mrs has gave up on that. I usually watch something on my ipad or listen to some music until she gets bored of it.

Epitomises everything that is wrong with the music industry and the messages given to our young people! You want to be a musicina? No you don't need to be musically gifted, play an instrument, work hard etc etc. Just go a Tv show, give a sob story and have a semi decent singing voice! Oh yeah and if you aren't up to scratch we will embarrass you into never performing again by still putting it on TV and abusing you! Surely its had its run by now and can piss off!
Mike Oxlong Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Watching re-runs of Jim'll Fix It. It's somehow lost it's charm of yesteryear now that we know the only person he was fixing it for was himself.
Mike Oxlong Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Babestation - ever since the girlfriend saw the last phone bill.

When I grew up if someone said you had the X factor it meant you were pretty special at what you were doing now it just means whether you can be marketed to the tune of millions regardless of talent/lack of talent. If they can put you in a machine and sell you, you're in.
The Blur Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 I don't know about TV but one film I gave up within first 15 minutes was The Tree of Life. An utter car crash of a mad man's random musing about the meaning of the life with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn thrown in for good measure.

Mike the Metal Ed Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Heroes half way through the third season is the only one I think. I have quite a high tolerance for seeing series through to the end.
One Arm Babba Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Prison break was a great example of what is wrong with American TV networks. A good premise gets ruined by good ratings, greedy execs try and string out the storyline and ruin the show. I watched most of it but packed up about 6 episodes from the end and will never go back. Breaking bad was fantastic, maybe they put in a few too many fillers in season 5 but at least it ended properly.
bovril Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 I gave up on Homeland. Claire Danes is so much of a swivel-eyed loon she should join UKIP.
Corky Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 Have I Got News For You. Sadly, this formerly fantastic programme has declined so much that it just isn't worth bothering with. Under Angus Deayton the show was brilliant, Paul Merton, although he didn't like Deayton, actually participated. Even after he went there were some good guest hosts (Brucie's first was a classic) but now the show is so stale, the guest hosts are hardly guests any more given their regularity and the contestants' quality is shocking. Eventually it turned into jokes about John Prescott or Boris. Probably should've finished about 5 years ago, the dead horse has been well and truly flogged.

Unbelievably great first series, monumentally shit by the last series.
Fox92 Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 This is totally true. It doesn't matter if someone gets voted out of a stupid talent contest, if they have any real talent then they drop into their local club/pub and start singing. Someone will eventually find you. But if you're easy to sell, like One Direction, then you're onto a winner (well the **** Cowell is anyway). People from Xfactor have 15 minutes of fame, then they're gone. Compare that to the likes of Paul Weller, David Bowie and Paul McCartney, all gifted musicians and singer-songwriters, that have had a long career. Still releasing music today.
Captain... Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 To be honest I don't think I've reached the end of any American drama series. Even things like Buffy and X-files which I used to watch religiously when I was younger I just lost interest in. They just seem to drag them out, take a good idea and milk it to death, or just over shoot, Lost is a prime example, came out stating it was going to be 7 series, but it then struggled to be interesting for more than 2. I'm still up to date on Walking Dead and Game of Thrones (does that class as American?).
21st Century Fox Posted 28 October 2013 Author Posted 28 October 2013 The decision to carry on watching a series used to be taken out of my hands if Sky ended up buying it after a few popular seasons on Channel 4 or 5. That was usually a good indicator that they'd got shit anyway. I used to like Nip/Tuck but never did see the last two seasons when it moved to Sky.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 28 October 2013 Posted 28 October 2013 I made it to the end of Prison Break but it was hard tbh, the last season was awful and that spin-off movie was also awful

For all its initial merit it was ruined by dragging it on. Prison Break is another one - How many prisons can one guy break out of. It was ridiculous! You clearly didn't watch series 2, zombies very much took a back seat and there was a lot more character development and tension between the characters, there was very little getting from "B to C" it was all about searching for Sophia whilst trying to create a safe place in the world again as well as the erosion of trust of human beings, other survivors and within the group. A lot of people didn't like it because of that and because it wasn't like series 1 there wasn't enough action and too much talking. This is the problem with a successful first series, if you try and repeat series one again, as they did with prison break, people will get bored, if you try and do something different people will criticise because it is not what they were expecting.

It became too predictable compared to the cliff-hangers they'd leave you with in Season 1. Didn't even know they had a spin-off movie! I've seen the alternate ending to the finale. Don't even want to give the movie a go!
