Repeat of last year?

Recommended Posts

I'm as pleased with this start as anybody, it seems various players (especially Vardy) have upped their game and contributed well to the team. I've always been a fan of Nigel Pearson and I believe he's done a terrific job. I just hope the curse of last year doesn't haunt us and our form dips in the new year! I know we have Burnley and QPR one after the other, then Reading afterwards (this month I believe). We win those 3? I'll be shocked we don't go up.

However, it does seem that there's a more positive outlook this season. Just desperate for the big time again! As I'm sure you all are...

I am still cautious but we are far more consistent this season and our away form is fairly decent as well which was a big problem of ours. Out of interest how many more points have we got after 17 games this season than we did last season?

We had 30 points and were 5th. So the very decent first part of last season is still eight points off what we've managed so far this year.

Funnily enough game number 18 was Sheffield Wednesday away.

I can't remember to be honest, I know we had lost 6 games before December so definitely improved in that instant!

8. We had 30 after 17 games last year.

Edit: Beaten to it.

Last season we played 25 games up to Christmas this year it is 23 so you have to factor in 2 games more.

I believe we had 38 points after 23 games last season, so we are certainly doing better.

The way I see it more than anything is how many points do we need to finish in the top 6.  Get them points and then look.  The fact that we have 38 already means that we are already over half way to a point total to see us 6th.  With 29 games still to play!  In theory, it would take a fook up bigger than last year to make the same mistake again.  And this team, whilst certainly will have a blip or two, doesn't look like one that will go 20 odd games winning just 2 or 3 of them.

I see it in that we could from now until the end of the season, have total midtable form (say 1 win, 1 draw, 1 defeat in every 3 games) and still have enough points on the board to sit comfortably in the playoffs (10 wins, 10 draws, 9 defeats = 39 points.  39+38=77).

I wont think about the top two places until we have secured a play off spot and there is only a handful of games left.  I never look at the gap down to 3rd, I look at the gap down to 7th.

I think the required totals will be significantly higher this season. A third of the way through and 2 points per game isn't even good enough for 3rd at the moment.

At this rate about 80 points will be needed to finish in the top 6. Can see it being 90 or even higher for the top 2.

Nigel will make sure they stay grounded and just focus on the next game. We seem far more resilient and mentally tough. Also we have excellent cover in almost every position, except on the wings (needs addressing).

I'm trying not to but I'm daring to dream

Form table makes interesting reading over the last 6 games... with QPR only averaging 1.33 ppg and Burnley only 1.5 ppg.

We've got a whopping 2.50 ppg from the last 6.

There are no excuses for a collapse in similar fashion, we have a better squad, a squad that had the painful memories to learn from.

We look a more resilient team, far better on the road and are winning games we didn't win last season (as borne out by the comparison statistics).

Oh yeah I agree that the points required for top two will be higher say than last season, 80 points for top 6 is too high.  Im not sure thats ever been required before.  At current rate judging by the tables 75 points is required.  But thats assuming that all teams in the top 6 go along at the rate of knots that they are currently.

A quick look at form suggests that bar Derby, all teams are dropping off form wise.  Blackpool have only won 3 in 10 league games, Reading 4 in 10, Forest 3 in 10 etc.

I think one of the main issues we had last season which led to our collapse was the signing of Harry Kane, it completely messed up the system we had previously been playing which had got us into that position, hopefully Pearson will be as shrewd in his summer signings as he will be in January as we don't need disruption to the squad harmony.

The table could look very different at Christmas though. Maybe it's the eternal Leicester pessimist in me but I'd like to wait until after we've played QPR, Burnley, Reading...

Am I the only one that feels that the whole squad has learnt from last season and am starting to feel confident about what we can achive ? Yes there is a long way to go but why would things suddenly go wrong, even through the bad spell last year we didn't fall apart, we just lacked something or something was not right. This season we have improved, we are getting results, we have better depth and blance in the squad, everything is coming together. Come on let's face it who would fancy playing us at the moment. Yes we have four big fixtures and a tricky one against SW but if we get anything more than 6 points from these games we will turn into the new year in a very strong position. We may not still be top, but we should not be far away. I for one have always give them to Xmas and it's all looking very good to me. Don't forget we are not in false position or needing to win the forth coming games to stay in touch. If we win 3 or more before the new year we could well be ripping this league apart. And that my fellow foxes would be the start of something special.

Definitely... I think we'll have a good idea where we are after the next 6 games.

Our results against the top 8 last season:

Cardiff- 1 point

Hull- 4 points

Watford- 0 points

Brighton- 4 points

Palace- 1 point

Bolton- 4 points

Forest- 4 points

Wasn't the top sides that proved our downfall. If we end this season with that sort of record and beat most of the lower placed teams we should be in real contention.

I think the players will be grounded this year, when they take into consideration what happened last season. Also, we have more experience now with GTF, Hammond and Marcel - all of which will prove to be excellent signings on and off the pitch.

Posted

It's definitely on everyone's minds but you live and you learn. And it looks like the players are definitely learning from last year. We seem to be making less mistakes and a bit more clinical in attack this season.

I just hope that we keep level-headed and composed until that final whistle of the season goes and we find ourselves in the same position as we are in now i.e. 1st. Take each game as it comes, ignore what happened last season (I think the players will have it drilled in to them not to revisit the negative experience of winning so little in the 2nd half of the season), keep improving game on game, and I think we'll be fine.

We're showing promotion form right now (2.1 or 2.2 points per game?) so keep that up (easier said than done) and we'll be alright.

I feel the team is much better (as everyone has stated!). They are a year older and wiser in this division, most of whom are young lads to be fair!
Key this season will be the experienced folks such as GTF, Hammond and Wasi. We didn't really have those sorts of characters last year and I do believe having that experience in a, mainly young, squad is vital for progression in this division. I am cautious about December. I'm not getting my hopes drastically up, like last season, but I feel that there is something different to this year which gives me a bit more confidence than last year's. For me it's the experienced players.
I want to see where we are come January. This is a big month (like every), if we can get some results out of QPR, Burnley and Reading it will put a statement out.
I'm very much on the cautious side after last seasons downfall. I am quite looking forward to this months football  :chant:

In pearson we trust. He has done excellently, this season in particular. His signings will be the difference, they are exactly what were needed last season, experiance. And they didnt cost us much money (hammond came for a small fee i believe), the squad has a good, tight-nit feel to it and i have a good feeling about this season. I dont want to get too ahead of myself, because we are talking about leicester city, but i really think this could be our season. COYB

Sure, but after this start we should now be aiming for top 2 this year, not top 6. The games coming up should give us a better idea of how realistic this is.
