...has just branded us the biggest chokers in football.

What, bigger than Middlesborough? Who were doing as well as us and ended 16th!!!!!

Posted

All of the callers pissed me off because they're all Arsenal or Chelsea fans, most of whom live in places like Wycombe and Luton. All of the adverts are aimed at Cockney tradesmen exclusively.

It's basically like sitting in a pub listening to a load of demented southerners talking incessant shite.

You got that right.

Also they've been guilty of making up ridiculous rumours about us in the past.

I cannot take anything about it seriously.

Cant stand the ugly tw@ speaks so much boll*ks its unreal.

If we were down at the bottom he'd probably be singing our praises! He just doesn't like teams or people doing well for themselves other than himself miserbale bstrd.

Castrates Everton for some strange reason every time I hear him its something bad towards Everton!

Blokes a loser. Probably still lives with his mam

I listen to Talksport all day and let me tell you when his show starts I usually switch off.The guy is the most boring guy on the planet, the slagging off of Arsenal is a regular thing and he's been saying the same thing for years. Why he's in a job I don't know. The total opposite is the Colin Murry show at 10am.Informative,funny and never boring. If Van Persie wins a dodgy penalty Colin Murry might discuss it for 2-3 mins, that twat Durham will do an hour on it,a fookin hour.

Mike Parry was good,he was like a non PC bumbling Jeremy Vine, but funny too.

I'll admit I listen to TalkSport sometimes, mainly to sing along with the Selco advert (it's where the trade go) but I like Stan Collymore's shows and he gets people phoning in by just asking how their teams are doing, or why they think they got a good/bad result. Also like his reactions when commentating on games

Adrian Durham is a bellend though. Don't know how he got a job in media in the first place

Agree with you both.  Colin Murray's show is excellent, and you can get Mike Parry as a podcast.  Don't bother with the rest of TalkSport, except sa bit of Stan now and again.

I forgot we judged every team on everything they've ever done. Hypothetically, if we don't go up this year, it's yet another where we've hit the summit, ran away with it to an extent with another two sides, and yet failed to go into 2014/15 in a better position than a side who've finished 21st. Last year doesn't need explaining. The year before we were rightly favourites and blew it completely, the year before we choked at every single chance we had at getting into the top six, the year before... as good a season as it was, we still ultimately choked at the final hurdle.

What Middlesborough did, or failed to do, last season has nothing to do with the point about us being 'chokers'.

He did say "in football" though so it's a fair point. Middlesbrough choked more than us last season and I think until last year, it was Cardiff. Right at this current period of time, I think it's Leicester. I just happen to think that we've got a manager who'll get us over the line eventually and this year is as good a chance as we'll get.

Why do I even bother to listen to that idiot on the radio.

Until we go up he isn't wrong don't particularly like him but he is not wrong on this one.

I suggest you go back and read the thread again.

I must have missed what you're alluding to and after a quick scan I still am.

We've screwed a few times over the least few years, have Middlesborough done it as regularly as us?

So basically what you are doing is saying that in any season we've not been promoted we've choked. That makes everyone a choker in the league but two every year!!!

The team not being good enough doesn't mean they a chokers. We didn't fall at the final hurdle last year in terms of league position, we were poor in spells all year and were never consistent. If we'd gone into the final few games top two and bottled it fair enough, but it never happened.

Being made favourites the year before means nothing. Spending lots of money on shit players who don't perform isn't choking... it's shit management!

We've bottled it in pennos, twice. And that can be easily laid at the feet of individuals and not the team,.

Middlesboro were up there with us and finished lower than us in the end, so they must have "choked" more. Or were just not good enough.... which seemingly now gets labeled as "choker".

As for choking in other years, rubbish.

I disagree there.

We were fine until we hit top spot and them we started tumbling. That happened a couple of times.

Our form in the last 3 months was not consistent with our form in the previous 6. It was not just down to us not being good enough, there was clearly a collective mental failure. You could see it in the performances of a lot of the players.

You don't go from top of the league in January (more than half the season) to relegation form for the rest if you've not bottled it, because it just doesn't add up.

I'm not saying I agree with this geezer, but last season there was certainly an element of bottling it.

The previous seasons I agree, we just weren't good enough (though in 2010 we were just a bit unlucky IMO).

When you enter February in second and don't go up - that is choking, let alone nicking sixth at the last second and then missing out on getting to Wembley despite being one spot kick away.

When you outspend everyone in the division and only spend 3 days in the whole season in the top six - that is blowing a chance.

When you're the form team of the league over a good 3/4 month period and stop just before you get to the play-offs - that is choking.

When you're in a play-off semi final and you lose the shoot-out, one penalty being an absolute joke - that is choking. Regardless of how good that season was (and I'll defend that team all the way), we ultimately choked where it mattered.

Considering we've been in with a shout of promotion in every single one of these seasons, we're ultimately chokers because we haven't even made it to a play-off final in that time.

I just find the timing of this very bizarre though. We're still top of the league and deservedly so (IMO), but yet again, should we blow it this time - we've choked, yet again.

I disagree there.

But we were inconsistent. Look at the list of results.

1 win in 5

5 wins on the trot

1 win in 5

3 wins out of 4

no wins in 4

5 wins on the trot

1 win in 16

3 wins out of 5

They are so up and down,  there is now one you can say we fell away just because we went top, because we went on crap runs top or not.

If Burnley fall away, does that mean they have bottled it... or does that mean they just weren't good enough?

As I said if we got into the last few games of the season being top two and fell away than I might agree.

a) When you enter February in second and don't go up - that is choking, let alone nicking sixth at the last second and then missing out on getting to Wembley despite being one spot kick away.

b) When you outspend everyone in the division and only spend 3 days in the whole season in the top six - that is blowing a chance.

c) When you're the form team of the league over a good 3/4 month period and stop just before you get to the play-offs - that is choking.

d) When you're in a play-off semi final and you lose the shoot-out, one penalty being an absolute joke - that is choking. Regardless of how good that season was (and I'll defend that team all the way), we ultimately choked where it mattered.

Your definition is clearly different to mine. The wiki definition is how I see it

"In sports, a "choke" is the failure of an athlete or an athletic team to win a game or tournament when the player or team had been strongly favored to win or had squandered a large lead in the late stages of the event."

So using that definition:

a) Having a third of the season to go, is not in my eyes the "late stages of an event".

b) Outspending and failing is not choking, it's piss poor management. Being made favourite for spending money, is not the same as being favourite for having previously proved yourself good enough.

c) Or the team and management wasn't good enough, hence why they shit before the good run, after that good run, and the next season. People blamed our crash on Sven getting in the shite from Chelsea at the time... now we choked???

d) One man missing a penno doesn't make your whole team a bunch of chokers. Cardiff were favourites after years of putting money in and were an established team in the league.

Posted

We only really choked last season, the two years before that we were never in contention and just average, in 2009/10 that squad was probably between 10th-12th on natural ability so to finish 5th exceeded expectations for me.

a) Being in second with a third of the season left, to creep into the play-offs in the most unlikely of circumstances and then to blow a chance is choking. Were we not 'heavily favoured' when Knockaert stepped up for that penalty? We choked at Watford and we choked during February, March & some of April.

b) Choking might not be the exact term for 11/12, but we certainly bottled the expectation - spending the amount we did, we had every right to have expectations for that season, and we fall totally flat.

c) We blew it every time we got close after spending months in form. After the 2-1 win over Bristol City (in mid February), we were the leagues form side - from mid October to mid February, 4 months of the season, we were the leagues top side on form over that time. We did well over that time, but ultimately fell off when we could've got in there.

d) One man missing a penalty in a shoot-out when representing the whole team, that is blowing it. The penalty was the worst I've ever seen from a player at a game. No doubting how well Leicester did that season, it was a remarkable overachievement with a squad that played together very nicely, but the reality is, we blew it when it mattered most.

I think his terminology may be wrong, but to suggest we blow it as much as anyone over the past few years (which is surely what he meant?)? I can't argue with that at all, sadly.
