Anti-Climax Signings

I don't think anyone was actually excited by the signing nor by the amount of money we spunked on him.

He was actually on match of the day interviewed after playing for Wolves, he was umming and arring (are they words?) whether he was even going to sign for us, wish he hadn't. At least with Tricky Trev we only wasted 1 million on him.

Brian Carey, signed from Man united, surely got to be good.  :nono:

Nicky Mohan, chased by Little for ages, utter garbage,

Then we broke our transfer record for Mark Blake

Mark Robins signed for a Million, the first name player we had ever signed 12 goals in 3 seasons

I think I stopped expecting much from then on, partly because O'Neill rarely signed big name players but mainly because I had been disappointed so many times, I now reserve judgement until I actually see them play for us. Even when we sign players that I've watched play well week in week out in the Prem, it doesn't mean they will actually play well for us.

Harsh re Mark Robins scored the goal away at Ipswich that got us into the semi finals of the league cup!

Roberto Mancini

I know he was getting on a bit, but he did squat when he was here

Well past his best when we signed him. Turned up in an Armani suit still wore it whilst playing for us, too old. Will be like Kevin Phillips when we sign him for gords sake.

Ricardo

Yeah i agree was really excited when we signed him, fast forward about a month later he turned out to be one of our worst goalkeepers we've ever had! Another disappointing signing was another goalie in Chris Kirkland a local lad aswell, he only made about two appearances and one of them was at that poor 0-3 display at Millwall. As some of us said most of Sven's signing were probably anti climax.

Beckford for sure. Loads on this forum were on the brink of spunking themselves, when he arrived to sign. So much excitement & we all went to bed happy.

What was to come, was beyond disappointment. Seeing him for Everton scoring decent goals, and actually working pretty hard, I never thought he'd be so shit.

Correct,I hate Ipswich and him scoring at their place being ex Norwich was fantastic.Good night that.Where abouts in Suffolk do you live?

I thought Gelson Fernandes would be a top signing and be a fantastic midfielder in a promotion push.

Also, slightly harsh, but David Connolly, though mainly because we never played to his strengths and when we finally managed to get him scoring regularly we sold him. Believed he would score 25+ when he joined.

Rob Ullathorne- Worst luck with injuries probably ever

Ade Akinbiyi- Couldnt fulfill huge price tag

Momo Sylla- A tricky winger. Until he joined us

A whole host of recent signings, some of which never played a first team game

haha Akinbiyi. My main memory of him is against Liverpool, I think they beat us 3-0 and he missed 4 absolute sitters. Never seen someone celebrate a shit goal so much as well like he did against Sunderland (was it Sunderland??).

All the names I can think of have already been mentioned, but a special mention to Matt Mills, absolutely dire.

Gabor Bori and Zsolt Lackzo were big disappointments for me, I thought they would turn our season around, we ended up getting relegated.

Yuki Abe - I announced the signing on this forum as I knew Paulo's scout who left with him of course. The scout told me that Yuki would be the best player in the league and would shock the world! Yuki wasn't bad but he wasn't any where near that good! But then again, he also referred to Ruben Rochina as the next Messi!

Not a signing but I expected Schlupp to come through and become a poacher at this level, obviously still time but its not looking that way.

Expected more of the Yak when we loaned him.

11 goals in 20 games... not sure how many strikers can do better than that rate.

Biggest signing disapointmnet... Akinbadbuy was probably the worst until we signed........

That's a huge exageration, he wasn't even that bad. Alright he was a bit flappy but he wasn't terrible. Kirkland was much worse.

Martin Keown.

I know he was passed it when he signed for us but at the time we signed him I was fairly excited.

Walker, Keown, Lilian Nalis and Dion Dublin were going to form a spine that was to fire us into the Premier League just like 02/03...

Dion got sent off in a bore draw in the first game of the season v. West Ham and we all know what happened thereafter.

DJ Campbell

Stephen Clemence

I remember signing those two in particular and being excited.

In more recent times, Matt Mills. Thought he was the best defender in the division whenever I saw him for Reading. Was so wrong.
