Would you offer Nugent a new deal?

I agree, what an incompetent fool! Anyone with half a brain would know that a seven foot striker is a must against Watford.

I can't stand his trainers, his track suits or his post match interviews, oaf.

The fact that we have to create about ten chances to get one goal in this league is representative of the huge gulf between Championship and Premiership, because my friends, they'll be no such luxury in the Premiership! Yes, we can point to the fact that we got a good result against Fulham but it was a one off against a poor side which to be honest, could have gone either way. Stoke dispatched us with considerable ease I thought.

If we get promoted, whilst it would be sad to break up some of the team and with it, what appears to be an excellent team spirit and notwithstanding that too many signings can be difficult to integrate, I would evaluate our current crop of strikers as follows:

VARDY - KEEP - Won't be a 20 a season man but even in the Premiership, will cause a real headache with his pace, persistancy and aggression.

TAYLOR-FLETCHER - NO.

WOOD - KEEP - At 21, plenty of time to improve and offers something different. Premiership quality not yet, but decent back-up.

PHILLIPS - NO - Brilliant player in his day, if only he was even just 6-7 years younger, he could be exactly what we need. Would however like to see him, being the consumate professional that he is, being kept on at the club in some sort of role.

NUGENT - NO - Like him but despite his recent minor renaissance in form, he's just not good enough for the Premiership and never was and won't improve at his age. Too lazy too often this season despite what Youngy on the radio thinks and is shot shy.

SCHLUPP - KEEP - Don't know what to say about him tbh, when he is given a chance he doesn't exactly bust a gut. Not even sure he's striker, but there's just something there I can't put my finger on.

DILEMMA...SO WHO DO WE NEED! We create a barrow load of chances that a younger Kevin PHILLIPS or dare I say it, a YAKUBU would absolutely thrive on!  Realistically every Premiership club wants what we are after, some have deeper pockets than us and some clubs/areas like London are more attractive to foreign players so it won't be easy. Don't who's out there, hopefully WALSH and his team already have a target or two and I think they've proved themselves to be very shrewd thus far. As for NUGENT though unless he wants a 1 year extension mainly to sit on the bench, then a definite no.

If we do get promoted we'll certainly have to strengthen the squad.  However, IMO we should retain the core of the squad that gets us there - I believe that NP will want that, he strikes me as a person who is loyal to his players and expects the same of them.  Whilst we may not have the best player in the Championship in every position we're performing well as a team, and we need to keep that attribute if we go up.  So I hope that Nugent is offered a new deal, at least for long enough for him to prove if he can still cut it at that level.

Honestly, no. Unfortunately, if we have aspirations of being a Premier League club then Nugent isn't good enough. Perhaps on a one year deal as a back up but he won't take that. Time to move on if we go up, transition has no friends.

How many teams have gone up, completely dismantled the team that won them promotion by signing 10 plus players and plummeted straight back down? Loads

How many teams have added a few quality players to their promotion winning squad and done really well?

Nugent will be hungry to prove that he can make it in the prem so let's keep him and give him a fair crack at it if we go up.

Chris Wood will be off along with Schlupp, GTF and Phillips so it wouldn't be wise to bring in another striker

The word 'tinpot' has been used a lot this week.

Seems to me that deciding our leading goalscorer isn't deserving of a new contract as he "isn't good enough for the Premier League" (before we have even got there) is the definition of the word.

Schlupp or Nugent - would go for Nuge every time. You just have to look how ineffectual Schlupp was v Derby in the League Cup and the difference Nuge made second half to tell the difference in class. Whilst Schlupp is young, I'm concerned that he hasn't a football brain and that is something experience won't help with.

No concept of loyalty, some of you. People complain when a player sacks off the club that makes him for a bigger side or more money. Why should the club do the same?

He's firing us to the premiership, he deserves a shot at playing there. All the key squad members do.

I couldnt agree more.......so i wont.

There is no telling whether he would be really good in the Premiership it being completely different football so yes I would keep him..  Having said that I think if Wood is fit he should play with Vardy for a spell to see if the goals scored increases.  Vardy is having a much more effect season than Nugent..

Surprised the question has been asked tbh.

It's not just about his goals. It's the assist's he gives, plus the harrying of defenders, an unselfish player who gives his all for the team.

Of course I'd keep him.

He has had great chances to get us points against forest, wednesday and today but he continually fails to deliver.

One thread, but you've done this before in other threads. I know it's not only you, mind.

It's just the bottom bit which I've highlighted that I don't get. It's a team game, you know, it's not David Nugent FC... I recall Vardy missing a one on one at Sheffield Wednesday? Forest was just a weird one where we had chances but they kicked the hell out of us and somehow scored, etc etc. There are 10 other players around him.

I agree and suspect the manager does too. And I am sure the DoF/board.

By definition, if we win this league then our team is too good for the Championship and we shouldn't have to make wholesale changes to compete in the lower half of the Premiership. Nugent has been a big part of the team this season, he's scored goals and made assists - if he was with another team, he'd probably be on our shortlist to sign. I wouldn't give him a 5 or 6 year deal, but he deserves a couple of years on a contract and there shouldn't be any reason why he wouldn't take that. We should obviously take the opportunity to make sure new contracts are economical if we are relegated in any season, but I assume that is standard practice.

If we achieve promotion then the summer should not be spent chasing signings who could compete in the top half of the Premiership (and I can't see Peason doing that anyway) - it's unrealistic and we would end up disappointed. We have a good team and need to add some quality to make a better squad, but that should mean retaining the majority (certainly the core first team squad). I am sure there will be conversations with some who will likely drop out of the picture altogether, but there won't be a desparate need to jettison over-earning players.

If we managed to bring in two top strikers, Nugent would still be third or fourth best (I'd say his ability and experience probably puts him above Vardy and Wood in a Premiership squad) so it seems odd to say we should get rid.

Yes, offer him a 3 year deal. Offer all the players premiership deals and wages but don't break the bank. If we get relegated then all players go back to Championship wages

I think we will get promotion this season. I don't want us to spend big and put us in financial trouble. If we get 1 player and get relegated i would be happy. Then we can get back into premiership and have money that comes in from the premiership.

Tinpot or Crackpot whatever it is your right, should we go up, I hope and think Nugent will be with us in the Prem.

I agree with that. I'd be disappointed if we made wholesale changes to the squad if we went up. Players deserve a chance at a higher level if they've played a major part in getting there.

Three year deal is a no brainer in my opinion.

He's our top scorer, and has been for three seasons in a row, clearly loves it here and knows where the goal is. He's hitting his peak as a player, and you can guarantee he'd be snapped up by Palace or someone and fire them to Premier League safety at our expense. Would he score as many in the Premier League? No. Would he score some important goals for us? Almost certainly.

I can see Pearson signing one or two more strikers if we do go up, so Nugent would have to accept he wouldn't necessarily be the first name on the teamsheet, but he'd still have a future for us.

Jesus christ why are we all so fickle.

He was nominated for player of the month in January... how long ago was that?!

Sure, I'd offer him a new deal, he is detrimental to our promotion chances and if we go up he would play a large part.

Who has been contributing enough then?

Because Nugent has had a hand in more goals than anyone else on our team.
