The Striker Situation

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was initially going to start this about Kevin Phillips and whether or not you'd keep him on next season but realised a few of our strikers have uncertain futures at the moment so might as well discuss them all!

For those of a nervous disposition I will be assuming we are to go on and be promoted here, if we don't then the situation obviously changes:

  • Vardy - the most sure for me. I reckon he'll be starting for us in the Prem, his closing down is absolutely vital to the way we play.
  • Nugent - bit of a weird one to even debate not offering him a new contract given the goals and assists he has this season but at times he's just not seemed at it for me. He has prem experience but with the high wages and natural contract end will we just part companies? I'd be happy to offer him a contract but not sure he's be a definite starter next year.
  • Wood - Weird one this. When he came he was excellent but now he's a big man who can't play as a target man. He's looked hungrier this season and has contributed well when he has come on I'm just not sure whether we'll stick or twist with him. I do rate him as the best finisher at the club though, maybe a loan out to a Championship club with immediate recall option?
  • Taylor-Fletcher - I like the guy and do believe he's contributed this season, but think we'll say thanks and go our seperate ways this summer.
  • Phillips - I love watching him play. He just knows where he needs to be in and around the box. Probably wouldn't cost a fortune and would suit his personal life needs being close to home still. I'd like to see him stay on in a player coach capacity (assuming he wants to go down that route)
  • Schlupp - Not a striker for me though would happily have him appearing down our left flank in some capacity. If he is happy to do that then great but it will depend what he wants to do.
  • Waghorn - I assume we'll part ways here.

Personally I believe we'll operate with a Vardy/ [New Signing] partnership next season as first choice. A Ricky Lambert type would be a great foil for him. Wouldn't like to see us just stocking up on strikers to have them sit on the bench though. I have confidence in the current management team to get it right though. Perhaps we'll see us occasionally operate with just one up front?

Thoughts??

Think we'll retain:

Nuge

Vardy

Wood

Schlupp (left back/wing)

Phillips (Coach, possibly playing role)

Sounds good.

I'd go after Ross McCormac and we'd be sorted for strikers.

I imagine Vardy's agent will push for a new deal in the summer, would imagine he will hold out and get three years seeing as he is out of contract in 2015.

Nugent deserves a go at the Prem, he will want 3 years too but I can't see him getting it, 2 at most for me. Nugent is critical to this formation, he links the midfield and the attack.

Wood I think we will hold onto, he may end up out on loan though. If we sign more than one or two strikers we might sell in Jan, possibly after a (hopefully successful) loan spell.

Schlupp will be retained no question.

Phillips will join the coaching staff.

Waghorn will be sold (unless he's out of contract, can't remember, think he got a new deal til 2015?) and GTF will be released.

Expect us to look to sign another striker who plays off the front man.

Vardy will need a new partner, it's alright keeping the likes of Nugent for experience & Wood perhaps for a goal or two, but for me personally I wouldn't get another Championship striker like McCormack.

We need to make a statement and spend a bit of money on somebody who has done well this season. Somebody like Alfred Finnbogason spring to mind. Or it wouldn't surprise me if Pearson goes for a free agent like Filip Djordjevic or Hugo Almeida, both out of contract at End of Season's.

Staying: Vardy, Nugent, Wood, Schlupp and Phillips (most likely as a coach or player/coach from what the media have reported his career plans to be)

Out: GTF and Waghorn

If we go up I think we will only need the one additional striker. I think that needs to be someone who has scored goals at a premier league side. Demba Ba would be a great signing and a realistic possibility or someone of his ilk. If we go for a championship striker it has to be someone who has scored goals consistently over a few years in a Mid-top side, or chances are they'll struggle with the step up. Jordan Rhodes and Ross McCormack are the 2 stand out names in that department.

Really want Chris Wood to stay around the club. Don't think he is one of these players that are around for promoted teams then get loaned out/sold back (Simon Cox, Billy Sharp etc), he has too much ability and potential to be lost to us. Hope Pearson has him earmarked for a greater role in the squad next season, and with learning from SuperKev, he can only improve (still only 22)

I suggest we keep Vardy, sign another striker as a partner and have nugent on the bench fighting for 1st team. Keep wood, and get rid of Kevin Phillips and Taylor Fletcher.

Or sell him, and get in Tom Gray, big and powerful frontman, his presence would have Terry running scared

Djordevic wouldn't surprise me. France seems to be Steve Walsh's 2nd home these days and if he's out of contract, even more likely.

I find Wood a weird one. I can't get if NIgel liked him or not. At the moment he seems to go for KP and GTF from the bench. Maybe horses for courses? I would give Nuge and Vardy a run next season but getting a (very) little worried about how clinical he really is. Link up play and work can't be faulted, nor can his character.

Keeping wood injury free for sale?

Or not risking him till he's 100%

At 22, unless we're offered a very tidy sum, I'd be more than happy for him to prove his prem worth. The worst that could happen is having to loan him out. Me thinks 24 championship clubs would be interested.

Darren Bent to partner Vardy next season for me. Given a full pre season without injuries, I am certain he can find his goalscoring form he was known for at the start of his career!

Jordan Rhodes is the only decent suggestion so far. I'd take Shane Long or Borini on loan

I personally think Wood will be sold. Too many injuries and don't think he's cut out for the prem

Hasn't he signed a pre-contract agreement with Lazio? Sure I read that it was a done deal or going to happen.

Agree he'd be an intriguing signing should we turn to the foreign market.

Agree with this, plus one more signing. Nuge has made a Hell of a lot assists this season so would be very risky to get rid as we know how well he works with Vardy. We need a michu please Nige

Jelle Vossen.

Good shout - he's great on FIFA :D

I'd love to sign Hernandez from Man U but that's just a day dream.
