Richard Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 Taken over at Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/may/07/helena-costa-clermont-foot-manager
Jon the Hat Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 Fair play to her. Why not, plenty of managers who never played the game at a high level or at all.
Nalis Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 As most matches are evenings and weekends, I approve as it still means she can still have her husband's dinner ready when he comes home from work. In all seriousness though, fair play. If you are good enough, it doesn't matter if you are male or female. Hope she does well.
One Legged Beaver Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 Clermont foot sounds like some sort of disease.
Rocket-Ron Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 This move hasn't got either Richard Keys or Andy Greys seal of approval. Good luck to her. And good on Clermont. It doesn't matter what sex you are if you're good enough.
separator Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 She's been practicing parking the bus with the players today. Took her 20 minutes to get the players into position and kept bumping into the corner flag.
Alf Bentley Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 What a strange thing to do. That's exactly what lots of people said when the Tories appointed Maggie as leader! Apparently she studied under Mourinho at Chelsea, was a coach at the Benfica academy, a scout for Celtic (that should win you over!) and managed the Iranian women's team, so it sounds like she has some professional pedigree and is up for a challenge. Of course, she may yet prove to be a rubbish manager or it may not work out for all sorts of reasons. Will be interesting to see, though....
Guest MattP Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 Obviously not that many considering she took over 50% of the leadership vote and kept winning elections , shows what a free thinking liberal party beyond it years the Tories were, 1975, ancient times now. It's a strange decision for all sorts of reasons, mainly the fact a women has never experienced the physical side of the male game and despite the comments of Mourinh/Wenger etc weren't great players, they were actually playing to a very high standard until injuries curtailed them. Certainly higher than Benfica ladies would have been. Her eyesight obviously isn't too sharp given four of her players at Iran were found out to be blokes. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/four-iranian-women-footballers-banned-3132742 We'll see how it goes, I know where my money will be though on Bet365 next season.
Finnegan Posted 7 May 2014 Posted 7 May 2014 If she's good enough then who cares? Let her crack on. If she can get the respect of her players then it doesn't matter what level she's played at. AVB never played and he's won the Portuguese league. Flopped at Spurs but he's clearly a passable coach. Steve McLaren has a good record coaching with little to no playing experience doesn't he? Edit: I apologise, McLaren played football league. I thought he'd only played in non league. Still.

McClaren has got over 300 professional games to his name. Correct though, if she's good enough she'll be fine, gaining the respect of the players might be the hardest part of the job.

As I recall, Thatcher partly won the Tory leadership through the excessive aristocratic politeness of Willie Whitelaw. He was the favourite to take over, when Heath was overthrown, but was too posh and polite to challenge Heath as leader, and Maggie achieved unstoppable momentum. I was mainly talking about comments by voters, though. I was 17 when she became PM, so I remember it quite well - hearing blokes (in a Tory constituency) commenting about how we couldn't have a woman PM... and saying that it was "a strange thing to do" to appoint her. Do Wenger, Mourinho and co examine their players genitals then, to make sure they've not had surgery?! Still, you might prove to be right, Ms. Costa might be an utter disaster. Thatcher certainly was!
Super_horns Posted 23 June 2014 Posted 23 June 2014 Looks like she's quit already.http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27984653
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 24 June 2014 Posted 24 June 2014 Got them in the (very small) spotlight didn't it?
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 27 June 2014 Posted 27 June 2014 Seems like she was pissed on, by the board. Shame that.
Thracian Posted 30 June 2014 Posted 30 June 2014 She showed her naivity from the start by accepting the job without sorting her conditions in the first place. The idea is just a liberal dream. Yes. if someone got the chance to prove good enough, the best of luck to them, but that chance is remote. Women just aren't likely to have the background. Dealing with all the complexities of a mens professional football team is daunting. And for all that you might acquire some of the skills necessary, it would be extraordinary for a woman to learn enough to manage successfully. You never say never but how many clubs would be willing to take such an unnecessary risk? Women can acquire the skills and experience necessary to run accountancies, schools, hospitals and so on. But mens professional football teams? How would they do it?
