Guest Bilo Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 It's been abysmal for England this one. Our pitiful contribution long since forgotten, going home at the same time as such minnows as Iran, Honduras and Spain. However, it's time to look to the future. The last, lingering remnants of the so-called Golden Generation have huffed and puffed their last, and a new generation is set to take their place. If nothing else, the young players taken to Brazil have had a learning experience. Which of them will be on the Eurostar to France in two years' time? My team would look a bit like this: Hart © Shaw Smalling Cahill Flanagan Oxlade-Chamberlain Wilshere Barkley Sterling Walcott Sturridge Subs: Ruddy Moore Walker Wickham Rooney Plenty of pace, youth, creativity and talent and the old guard expunged. We won't win Euro 2016 with this, but we'll have a much better shout of having a respectable tournament than we would otherwise.
Bryn Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 That team would get battered, midfield would get utterly overrun every single game.
ousefox Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Smalling has never shown any indication he's good enough to start at a WC. I doubt we'll play 442 but I do really want to see Walcott get a chance upfront.
Fox92 Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 We won't get anywhere until we re-shape the FA, and sort out the mess that is the Premier League.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 No real steel in midfield, plus I hope stones comes through at Everton, Smalling is poor. I think Jones will come through and give us what we need in midfield. Hart Walker Stones Cahill Baines jones Wilshere Walcott Rooney Ox Sturridge Forster Johnson Shaw Jagielka Barkley Sterling Welbeck
lgfualol Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Hart Walker, cahill, Moore, shaw Drinkwater Henderson walcott Barkley/Rooney Oxlade Sturridge
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 It's impossible to say who's going to be going to Russia (should we qualify) - the likes of Ings / Austin / Drinkwater / James / Moore could all be established top flight players by the time that tournament comes round and there's bound to be lads come through from the bigger clubs however fashionable it's become to bemoan the lack of English talent in the division. There are also the Chambers / Ward-Prowses of the world that have Premier League experience under their belts and in theory should only improve, too. Couldn't name a starting eleven to save my life but there's plenty of young blood to choose from and I wouldn't weep if the defence in particular got shaken up with it. HOWEVER - Despite doing poorly at this tournament, I don't think we should discount how valuable experience is, bad or otherwise. Rooney, for example, should still be considered a very important player for England; lets not reduce the average age for the sake of it.

Narborough_fox Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 I don't think you can pick a team for a tournament in 2 years time. After Euro 2012 who would have said that Raheem Sterling would be starting in the first game of the World Cup let alone be in the squad. There will always be that one player who pops out of nowhere and adds to the quality of the team. Edit: Just seen that MTWG has said exactly the same...
Guest ttfn Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 As somebody has said above it's next to impossible to tell who is going to be in the squad 2 years from now, let alone 4. Back in 2012 few would have predicted Lambert, Lallana, Shaw, Sterling, Forster, Henderson (who was a bit of a joke figure at the time despite having made the Euro squad), Barkley and perhaps even Lampard would make this squad. History suggests that somebody will be in the World Cup 2018 squad that 99% of us have not currently heard of.
sdb Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Judging by those sides it's not looking too bright is it?!
Ashley Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Personally think James or Drinkwater could feature for England if they carry on progressing the way they are.
RowlattsFox Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Need a couple of centre midfielders to come through, matty James has a real opportunity. Ward-prowse could be a player if he develops. Hart Flanagan Stones Cahill Shaw Wilshere James Sterling Barkley Oxlade chamberlain Sturridge Potential of a decent line up tbh, just need a good midfield.
Soar Fox Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 This is what The Mail predicited would be our starting 11 for this World Cup back in 2007. Player & Current club. Ben Amos (Man United) Sam Hutchison (Sheffield Wednesday) Micah Richards (Man City) Gavin Hoyte (Dagenham & Redbridge) Robbie Threlfall (Unattached) Dean Parrett (Stevenage) Michael Johnson (Unattached) James Henry (Wolves) Theo Walcott (Arsenal) Jose Baxter (Sheffield United) Scott Sinclair (Man City)
Soar Fox Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 The Guardian predicted back in 2008 that Danny Drinkwater would be a future England star.
Richard Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 From the squad from this WC, the only players that NEED replacing (i.e. They'll be getting too old) are Gerrard, Lampard Lambert, Jagielka and possibly Foster (will be 33). Apart from that all of the rest of that squad should hopefully all be in contention for Euros.
Samilktray Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Why would you need to replace a 33 year old back up keeper

Stadt Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 We don't have any decent holding midfielders so we can't continue with a 4231. There's too many Premier League club's chairmen on the board at the FA so they aren't interested in investing in the youth system because their own interests take precedence.
