ATLFox Posted 21 August 2014 Posted 21 August 2014 Apologies if already a thread. Seems to be trending at the moment. Here's one from our own Liam Moore http://instagram.com/p/r9jhYVpBy-/ and Duncan Ferguson http://instagram.com/p/r9nxC-Bn8V/ who nominates Hayley McQueen and Natalie Sawyer Is it just me or is there a delay when Dunc pours the water on his head? It's as if the water is too scared to come out haha
StanSP Posted 21 August 2014 Posted 21 August 2014 Bloody hell, even Conrad can't get that right. His flap on the bucket closes and the his side barely gets Liam lol
Lionator Posted 21 August 2014 Posted 21 August 2014 Springbok Rugby Legend & MND sufferer Joost Van Der Westhuizen does it...
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 21 August 2014 Posted 21 August 2014 As interesting as these clips have been, there's a couple of things bugging me about this / the way the concept of charity has moved in general; 1.) As some have mentioned, the exposure for ALS has been pretty poor in most clips. Vaguely mentioned, no reference of where to go to donate, what they do etc. It doesn't half feel like people jumping on a popular bandwagon 2.) Charity is suddenly becoming a big business - so a nagging doubt in my mind is where all this money goes? In this particular case, I bothered to search the charities website to see if they had any sort of accounts available - they didn't have anything as detailed as I was hoping, but out of the little information shown it highlights that 21% of it's year end 31 January 2014 expenditure was on Administration or further fundraising activities. They're also spending a further 32% ($8.5 million) on "public and professional education" - what ever that means? That means out of just under $30 million raised, under 50% is going on research or patient / community related activity. But then again, I also have a nagging doubt about these areas because what happens if through this charities research a breakthrough drug is found? Who will then benefit out of the millions of $ it would make as it goes to market - you've guessed it, big business pharmaceutical companies! Equally the patient and community services - isn't this essentially a subsidy for hospital care that should be covered through existing health service provisions that people already pay a lot of money for? I think we all need to be asking more serious questions about these organisations and where our money goes - especially if they're hiring Directors on 6 figure salaries. In my mind, charity has suddenly become too big, its a mass employer in this country (i.e. those annoying people with clip boards that bug you in the street or call centre people ringing you at night) and has become awash with self interest and back scratching. Maybe its time people looked to donate their time and skills as a part of giving to charity rather than just giving money? Just a comment piece really, but I'd be interested to hear what others think? I'm aware 'attacking' charity is highly controversial!
Kitchandro Posted 21 August 2014 Posted 21 August 2014 1.) As some have mentioned, the exposure for ALS has been pretty poor in most clips. Vaguely mentioned, no reference of where to go to donate, what they do etc. It doesn't half feel like people jumping on a popular bandwagon This is the thing for me. The idea that it raises awareness is, in the main, a lot of bullshit. I've noticed this bucket challenge thing going on for at least a week, I didn't even know it was for a charity until today, and I still don't know what the charity is for exactly. I'd suggest most celebrities are doing it because they've been 'nominated' and they don't want to look like bad people, plus it's little effort and doesn't require them giving their own money because it's all about 'raising awareness'. Fair enough if it's raised money, but it hasn't made me any more 'aware' of it. And if I want to give money to charity I'll probably drop my spare change in a box at the pub or something. I'm not going to go out of my way to find this specific charity because a load of celebrities tip buckets of cold water over their head. Maybe that just makes me weird.
Dan Posted 21 August 2014 Posted 21 August 2014 Great post that DJBH. I can't help but think people use the word 'charity' to gain the moral high ground at times. I don't want to come across like a complete killjoy although I probably do
David Guiza Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 Great post that DJBH. I can't help but think people use the word 'charity' to gain the moral high ground at times. I don't want to come across like a complete killjoy although I probably do I agree, equally a killjoy I guess . Whatever happened to a bit of selfless donating or people testing themselves (climbing mountains, running marathons etc) in order to raise money and awareness? Anything that raises money for charity is great of course, i'm just not entirely sure that the thousands of people uploading videos are more involved for themselves than for any cause. I am a cynic though, as you may have guessed.
Itsthejoeker Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 I'm not sure about anyone else, but I always thought donating to charity was supposed to be anonymous, not publicised so it can be used as a bragging right
Tommy G Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 ben hamers done one - no ice in the bucket though
leicsmac Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 If the charity gets the money and it's for a good cause I think it's much of a muchness about how it comes about. Let people massage their own ego as much as they like as long as the money is going someplace where it can be used. It's reasonable cynicism to say that most people are doing it just for the attention, but I really don't see the harm in that if the ALS charity is getting the correct cut.
fox123 Posted 22 August 2014 Author Posted 22 August 2014 No white tops Hayley McQueen @HayleyMcQueen 3m So #icebucketchallenge was accepted by @nataliesawyer & I. Stay tuned 4 our nominations....#theaftermath pic.twitter.com/evIbjcpO4U https://vine.co/v/MLrmYQXMAKd
Kitchandro Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 They're both incredible. Natalie's back on the market isn't she?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 I'm going to start a new trend. I call it "Hand In The Fire Nominating" - basically you nominate someone to put their hand in the fire and see if they will do it because you told them to.
Asha Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 Let's just be grateful 'Cock in the Sock' never really caught on.
Manwell Pablo Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 Macmilan hustling in on a bit of this Ice Bucket Challange action I see. It's rather funny when charity's start take donations off each other just goes to show the people in charge of them aren't as warm hearted as you think they are.
m4DD0gg Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 Hayley mcqueen is well decent, would love icing her buckets!
bovril Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 McQueen looks a bit chubby in that and her face is nothing special, Natalie is much nicer. I realise I'm in for a kicking now from the legion of HM fans.....
davieG Posted 22 August 2014 Posted 22 August 2014 No evidence that the water is cold never mind icy.
Itsthejoeker Posted 27 August 2014 Posted 27 August 2014 http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/local/2014/08/21/als-association-finances-2013/14380977/ This is quite interesting
