David McGoldrick

Have I stated anything about whether I think it's a good deal? I've said he wouldn't be my first choice, I've said it's more than his market value.

I have also challenged mis informed comparisons with our current strikers and moronic comments about being the worst transfer ever, before someone even signs, let alone kicks a ball.

I'll judge him when I see him play regularly, rather than make up weird scenarios like some to back up an opinion.

So yeh, you're overcooking it because you don't like certain people's over-negativity (more over the whole transfer window than this player, if you're honest).

But can't you also be objective and accept that this looks like it would be a poor signing? I'm not saying he just wouldn't be my first choice, I'm saying it would be a waste of money.

What weird scenarios are you talking about? He IS injury prone, he DOES have an average goalscoring record (at a lower level) overall. And as an all round player people don't think he's that good.

I usually stick up for your defence of these things when people are going over the top, but I'm not sure why you're getting all out your collar about this one, I think people are justifiably disappointed. On the whole I think the comments are fair.

It seems like we are trying to create our version of the 2013/14 championship team of the year: Hamer, Upson, Ulloa, Deeney and now McGoldrick and Simpson.

I don't object to any of these players individually, but collectively the one thing our squad lacks is recent Premier League experience....

@OfficialFOXES: #lcfc's players to have featured so far have a total of 550 #BPL apps, fewer than any other team this season. #LeiArs http://t.co/E12KPvDlcq

We really need more PL experience to improve the quality of the squad.

These players from abroad would already be with clubs if they were any good.

Do people genuinely think this is how football works?

We really need more PL experience to improve the quality of the squad.

Why do we? If they're good enough it shouldn't matter.

Knockaert isn't a natural winger though, anyone who's watched him can see that.

Playing McGoldrick in the role Knockaert should be playing (or that type of player anyway) is total madness.

Sorry but you're just talking utter shite, Deeney and McGoldrick are strikers, end of story. They are not attacking midfielders. Paying several million for a striker that is no better than what we have and then playing him in attacking midfield is a ridiculous idea.

The talk of him playing ahead of  some of our strikers is bad enough, the idea that he could play ahead of some of our midfielders is sickening.

Hnestly, think about what you are saying.

I think we'll just have to wait till one of them arrives. See where they play then.

You need to get away from these facts for a moment and realise that statistics are often misleading.

He had a better gpg ratio than our strikers, how is that misleading?

You can't tell people they haven't seen him often enough. A lot of us have seen loads of Championship football over the past few years. I highly doubt Pearson has seen much more of him than have.

Yes I can, there is no way people have watched him as much as they have Vardy for instance. They probably saw half a dozen of his games last season at the very most, to sit and and categorically state that a man with a better gpg is "considerably" worse than any of our strikers, based on a tiny number of games they saw last season is just utterly baffling.

I've probably seen him in the same number of games as most and I can't state stuff like that, so I don't get how others can form such strong opinions. Some of those games he was also bloody fantastic.

It's like other fans judging us solely on a couple of duff performances they caught on TV.

Vardy may have not got 1 in 2 last season but I'm telling you he was a better player than McGoldrick in the championship last season. That's my strong opinion, you can disagree if you like but don't just dismiss it because of that stat based on a very short spell of McGoldrick's career.

You tell me not to dismiss your opinion, but that's the point I'm making on him, people are dismissing Mcgoldrick on the back of a tiny sample of games.  Again, I fail to see how anyone can be so categorical about him being THAT much better last year.

I'm not sure why anyone would be pleased with this potential signing or think he would be any better than our current strikers.

.

Have I said that I am or he is? People are coming out with wild statements, that's what I have challenged.

We wouldn't be putting in a first bid this late unless he was far from our first choice.

Well that's fairly obvious.

Why don't people just trust Pearson's judgement and let him play a few games before saying he's shit (if he signs).

Which striker of ours scored 1 in 2 last year?

Wasn't it already stated by someone on here that he was out with a dead leg anyway?

Dunno don't spend my entire life on here

Every one is a scouting expert. Everyone always has all the inside knowledge on player values and negotiations. Everyone is a tactical genius. And everyone has a crystal ball and can tell us the future.

At least everyone whose mantra is, whatever we do, it's wrong.

Weren't all these doubters the same people who thought spending 1 mil on a conference 25 year old striker was plainly NUTS.  Now these are the same people saying VARDY should be worth tens of millions and still have ago at our management for buying players they want.

Vardy had a very ordinary first season with us, and broke out last year to be considered our first choice in the Premier League.  How can people make these outrageous remakes about a player they really don't know all that well.

I also doubt the transfer value being bandied about.

Posted

Why do we? If they're good enough it shouldn't matter.

If it was assured that these players were "good enough" for the Prem, they wouldn't have been playing in the second tier.

It took Vardy a season to adapt to the championship, if our whole squad had played like Vardy in 2012/13 we'd have been relegated.

The fact is a nucleus with experience of playing regularly at the top level is a good recipe for success.

I have been objective, I've said he's not my first choice (clearly wasn't the clubs either), I've said it's more than his market value. I can't say it's a poor signing until I've seen him play regularly. Only then could I give an informed opinion on that.

Unfortunately it's a signing dictated by circumstance more than anyway. If we'd known we'd miss out on all our other targets would could probably got him or someone like Grabban even for a fraction of the price early in the season Sadly, that's not the way it's gone but there is little we can do about that now.

If people have concerns about his injury history, his previous records before Ipswich and Cov etc fine. I have never challenged any of that, I have challenged two specific comments the most. One being it would be the worst transfer in football history, the other being that he'd considerably worse than ALL our other strikers and that someone would rather sign no striker or play Hopper. Comments I would say that aren't particularly fair.

Personally I would rather have N'doye if the prices reported on him are correct, but I can imagine that being a more complicated transfer. Dealing so late in the window, we're probably now going to be forced to look closer to home as they will be quicker to wrap up than foreign transfers.

With that in mind, if you go through the list of top strikers last season in the champ, he's the only person to have either not got promoted, moved clubs already, or signed a new contract. So I can see where the club are coming from with looking at him, the prices are bonkers obviously. But if Pearson wants a striker, and he's the best of what we can realistically get in due to time frames, then it's a call he'll have to make.

Weird scenarios... well this exchange is the one.

This would be the worst deal in transfer history. We would be a laughing stock.

So then, should he score half a dozen goals getting points that keep us up, whilst playing well... would he still be the "worst transfer in football history"?

No it wouldn't, but then he wouldn't score half a dozen goals would he? He'd play a few matches, miss a lorryload of chances and then do his ACL. 8 million well spent.

Posted

Wow some of you on here really don't have much patience, time or faith in our scouts and Pearson.

Posted

Babylon, he may not be considerably worse, but most on here I wouldn't think he was an improvement on any of the current 4 strikers we have.

In an ideal world we'd be signing someone brilliant and better than the lot. It's not an ideal world and that's why we are now way down the list of potential strikers. Pearson has stated he wants options up front and that he wants another striker, if we're after another option... does he not fit that bill? Do we really want Hopper as the 5th striker, or GTF for that matter?

Posted

Surely it cannot be right 8 million he scored less than Vardy and Nugent last year, Lewis Grabban would of been a better option

No, I'm quite clear we could have used GTF's wages to put towards a player that's going to serve a purpose. But that's a side point.

I'd rather just save £8m and used our current options of vardy, nugent, ulloa and wood until January and look for better value.

Posted

you're using one fact, his goals to game average over what, 30 games. great. that's that sorted then vardy OUT. nuge OUT. why we wasted so much money on ulloa i have no idea, OUT.

i'll give you the fact that nugent and vardy teamed up to win the league without even trying whilst mcgoldrick spent his time swapping between the treatment room and mid table mediocrity. FACT. his whole career has a FACT of one goal every 4 or so games in the league (that's league two, league one and the championship btw). he registered 4 assists and scored 14 goals last year, nugent alone was involved in almost twice as many goals (33). FACT.

he's always been an average, injury prone, run of the mill championship (at best) striker. NOT A FACT BUT OBVIOUSLY TRUE TO ANYONE WHO ISN'T AN IDIOT. 8 million pounds. making shane long for 12 mill look like a bargain.

You're wasting your breath. You're not the manager mate.

Well that's fairly obvious.

How is it misleading? I've explained why, because it's only about 30 games. That is not an accurate reflection of his career at that level. And also because there is more to a player than statistics. Vardy is far more important to our side than his GTG ratio would suggest. He's pacey, he's hard working, and he gives us a totally different option.

Sorry but you can tell what kind of player someone is after seeing them as many times as I've seen McGoldrick (and it's more thnan half a dozen, and I'm not just talking about the small sample of one season like you are). McGoldrick has spent years at Championship level can I point out. He has never been a top striker at that level until last season, which is, as I say, a small sample. If you look at him on the whole, he's not impressive.

If you want to look at his overall stats I can tell you, they are far from impressive. Less than 10 in about 70 games for Forest, similar at Southampton. If we're signing him on the basis of 31 games instead of him as an overall player, then we're making a mistake. If we're signing him based on his whole career to date, we've also made a mistake.

But besides stats, (because they're not the only thing that matters) he's not pacey enough, we need a bit of pace up front. And he's not a good enough player to make up for that lack of pace at this level. That is the kind of player he is, he's not right for this level and that's why his career as a whole does not look impressive.

I do agree with you, I don't rate him either, but this £8million figure will not be true. I just wish people would stop quoting The Sun, especially on this one. There is no way Ipswich would reject £4million, let alone £6million, for him. I think, anyway.

From comments I've seen from Ipswich fans they are really gutted about this, and think he could be a hit in the Premier League, they believe losing him could well wreck their season.

After the last couple of season's he has had at Coventry & Ipswich, I would take him for £3 million max; however he is not worth £8 million nowhere near that fee, paying that sum for McGoldrick at this moment in time cries out as a complete and utter joke, then again if he scores the goals we won't be bothered about that fee, we were moaning about Ulloa & his fee, very early days on him of course but he looked very good against Everton & scored of course.

Current thoughts on this is it's very bizarre, and considering some of McGoldrick's form in the past this could well turn out to be Beckford scenario number 2. As I say though, Ipswich fans seem genuinely gutted and who knows McGoldrick might have actually improved, has found his scoring boots consistently and is starting to peak he is still only 26, peak age tbh.

Another thread turns into a squabble between posters. Some of you seriously should take a break after reading someones post that winds you up, then come back and ignore.

2 or 3 back and forths are enough you're not adding anything to the thread and it's the same thing in EVERY thread. :)
