Jermain Defoe

a proven scorer is what we're missing and he's that fact. You'd probably be one of the people moaning if we signed messi.

No I wouldn't moan if we signed Messi but, quite clearly, this is nowhere near as clear cut. As much as you'd like to think you know that this would be a good signing, you don't.

There are still question marks for me - they aren't petty things that I'm pulling out of nowhere - they do matter and he has to tick those boxes before we sign him.

People genuinely believe we would pay him 70k a week? Have a word with yourselves.

Defoe knows he will be taking pay cut to get away from Canada and come back to England

Cmon chaps...don't start doing this again... Stop suggesting you know what he would be earning..you don't.

I expect it would have to be a decent pay cut, but I don't know this..

Not complaining but wouldn't have ranked an aging journeyman striker as anywhere near top priority right now. When we've struggled this season we've barely created any chances. I can hardly think of any examples where we've missed chances that I'd have been particularly confident of Defoe finishing. Our problem is we don't create enough chances in the first place. Defoe won't create chances. He won't finish many if any more of the chances we do create. Signing a striker because you're no scoring enough goals is quite simplistic. I don't think this signing will do us much good. No bad, but no good either.

I think on this occasion signing a striker is the obvious answer to our lack of goals.

Look at the matches where we've played well - we've created plenty of chances. Even matches like QPR away, we had about 10 decent chances that we didn't take.

When we're positive we're plenty creative enough, it's just that we're negative and one dimensional most of the time - opting to play the long ball from minute one instead of utilising the pace in our squad or playing at a quick tempo like we know we can.

The reason we lack creativity in a lot of games is simply because we aren't brave enough to attack teams that we are well capable of scoring against. Also, with a lack of confidence I think we've been afraid to shoot.

Sure, we could be more creative, no part of our squad is complete, but in terms of our biggest problems and what we need to do to survive, a striker and defenders would be at the top of my shopping list.

How long was the Cambiasso thread before he signed?

Is it unthinkable that he might not have the right attitude having gone to the MLS or that he might have lost his touch a little?

I get so bored of these little phrases implying that those who don't agree 'aren't thinking properly'. You don't sound intelligent or convincing. The only person's who's definitely wrong here is you claiming you know that he'd be good signing. You don't.

I think Defoe did go to TFC for the money, but he also went with promises from the ownership group and management about building a winner, with them making some bold talk to the press. I also think he's since realized that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, but I wouldn't take that as a negative sign because I think any concerns he has about the ability of TFC's organization to build a winning team are valid ones.

Genuinely WTF?

Vardy is pathetically bad in comparrison to Defoe. Vardy litterally cannot finish for sh*t. Get's himself in front of goal and all he knows is 'kick it hard'. Honestly...

Who said anything about Vardy? Not me. I said we need a striker, but I don't think Defoe is the answer

Where's £75k come from?! lol

Ignore the money cos no one really knows.

But I do trust nige and the owners would not put us in a position we could regret.

If we're going to do something I hope we do it quickly.

2 massive home games in the next 2 weeks and we need as many options as possible given that our best player is going to be missing for both games.

843 pages...we got plenty to go yet!!!

Do you actually have the slightest clue about football? We create about 2 or 3 goal scoring opportunities per match and I guarantee that Defoe would put at least one of them away as opposed to Ulloa only scoring headers and Vardy and Nugent scoring 1 in about 20 each. Defoe is a 1 in 3 striker regardless of his age.

Edit: and why are people constantly moaning about his wages? It's not like your paying them and besides good players cost money and if we aren't willing to spend money we may as well just give up.

Yeah I have plenty of a clue. I didn't want Yakubu and he turned out to be lazy. Same with Beckford. I'm not the type to get excited by 'big names'. I wasn't as OTT about the Cambiasso signing as most others. Still not convinced he's right for us despite his obvious quality. I'd be dubious about singing Defoe because he's getting on a bit and hasn't played since October. This level is so so good, I wonder how long it'll take him to get up to speed. That's it. I'm not suggesting we are ok with our current strike force. Of course we are not; not enough goals. However, I'm not that excited by Defoe.

I agree with you on Defoe and was vocal about Beckford from day 1 but Yakubu was a good signing.

Lazy or not at least he knew where the back of the net was.

Again, nothing really new in terms of what we know but it would appear Canadian media are picking up on the fact he is set to join us. Interestingly, Nigel would not be drawn into making direct comment on either Defoe or Schwarzer post-match either today. You usually know that means something is going on.

Where else can we get a 20 goal a year striker for the type of money he will cost. Costa cost 62 mil Suaraz 74 mil. and there's others. Yes it's a risk, but a no brainer really. We have to get someone of his quality. Why not him.

I thought Yakubu was awfully frustrating. Clear talent but just couldn't care less. Beckford and Collymore were just the same for us.

Yes I remember him ruling out Kenwynne Jones when that rumour started.

I understand in some cases, there is no news, but I have just listened to his interview on talksport and it sounded like his usual guard of 'We are definitely in for x, y and z but I won't tell you anything definite because of outside influences'. The fact Mercado and the Guardian have said it looks on, to me, gives it some sort of likelihood.

I think that bracketing Yakubu (11 goals in half a season, has played in World Cups, scored dozens of goals in the top flight) with Beckford (never scored double figures above League One) is grossly unfair.

Perhaps they had a similar style but as I said earlier at least Yakubu knew where the goal was.
