MHC Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Where's £75k come from?! Who cares what he's earning? I couldn't give a monkeys left testicle what he earns if he scores goals I don't even care if it's 100k a week I really don't.
Finn Claw II Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 I'd rather have him on loan to the end of the season. Even £50k a week 'only' adds up to £1m or so - well worth the potential reward of survival. Best finisher since Cottee?
Al-aLondon-Foxile Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 The only gamble is whether he'll stay fit and score goals. He has the proven track record in this league and whatever it costs is more than covered by the money the club earns from the promotion to the premier league. Beyond that we have parachute payments at worst. No big financial gamble IMO.
Manwell Pablo Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 It's where he's going to play for me. Obviously up front but we tend to favor a deeper lying forward which he clearly isn't going to do so it's either drop Ulloa or play Ulloa where Nugent is playing now, or play with two complete out and out strikers. I'm not adverse to this though, 32 is far from old.

Guest Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Another player with experience who can help develop the movement and timing of our attacking play in the same way that Cambiasso is clearly influencing the midfielders and others.

I'd play like that (him and crouch worked well like that) at home and then probably Ulloa and nugent away with Defoe as an option when chasing. Doesn't have to start weekly.
Jaspa Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 We lack a real proven goalscorer at this level and that is exactly what Defoe is. If hes fit; we're happy
chapero82 Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 @Lewis_Agent: Breaking: I'm being told Leicester City in 'advanced talks' to sign Toronto FC striker Jermaine Defoe. Deal is very close to completion.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Eh. I love signing kids with potential and obscure foreign gems but right now we need a quick fix. Defoe is probably the most readily available goal scorer that knows this league backwards and pretty consistently scores at this level. He's only got to last half a season, his age is irrelevant. If he keeps us up he's done his job. Is exactly right.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Yeah I have plenty of a clue. I didn't want Yakubu and he turned out to be lazy. Same with Beckford. I'm not the type to get excited by 'big names'. I wasn't as OTT about the Cambiasso signing as most others. Still not convinced he's right for us despite his obvious quality. I'd be dubious about singing Defoe because he's getting on a bit and hasn't played since October. This level is so so good, I wonder how long it'll take him to get up to speed. That's it. I'm not suggesting we are ok with our current strike force. Of course we are not; not enough goals. However, I'm not that excited by Defoe. If Yakubu had have continued his goal scoring ratio over the course of a season he'd have scored about 25 league goals. I frankly couldn't give a **** if he's lazy or spends the entire match windmilling in my old dear's face if he'd had done that. I can understand the Beckford slating but Yakubu was far, far too good for the Championship, it baffles me how people continue to dismiss him as "lazy" - cliched nonsense.
joedawg Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Defoe and Nugent can rekindle their England partnership1 goal and 1 assist between them on that great day, what a partnership we have on our hands
Bamba's Babes Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 None of the players in our squad are getting anywhere near scoring those type of goals. Age has very little to do with any of them. People doubting a potential fee which is lower than what we paid just 6 months ago for Ulloa and rumoured to have bid for Deeney and McGoldrick. Wages will obviously be higher but so what? We won't be tying ourselves to him for 4 years.

chuck'em Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 My only worry would be the cost, but if Nige is happy with it then I trust him. He has shown that he will not risk our finances, so if he thinks it's worth I have no reason to doubt him. Defoe is undoubtedly a player that would improve the first 11, not just the squad, which is exactly what we need now.
Merging Cultures Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Defoe and Lennon would be great business in January. I am trying to not get too excited.
Callabinho Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 You never lose what Defoe has, he's a natural goal scorer.
GaelicFox Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Why are people bleating on about money We are debt free Own the ground Will earn 200m over the next 3-4 years even if go down And the owner is filthy rich So what does it matter what we spend ? Get on and spend it and plenty of it
ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 You never lose what Defoe has, he's a natural goal scorer. Might have said the same about Torres a few years ago...
Callabinho Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 Might have said the same about Torres a few years ago... Torres is completely different in my opinion, all about pace and strength, a string of niggling injuries took away that extra yard he had. Defoe can mix it up he doesn't have to rely on pace, his positioning is incredible.
Happy Fox Posted 4 January 2015 Posted 4 January 2015 No brainer as far as I am concerned is an upgrade on Vardy which is what we need. And Vardy will improve as a player from learning from someone of his experience.
