les-tah Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 People who moan about wages baffles me. In every work place a higher ability costs more money and football is the same. A footballer on a higher wage does not unsettle a whole team as this is what happens up and down the country in the premiership.
johnny the fox Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 A fit Defoe will be a great asset to City, sign him up please and forget about all this relegation rubbish, the goals for him, Ulloa & Nugent will fly in plus those from Vardy, Mahrez, Lawrence & Schlupp and its Europa League for us..... "A fit Defoe"... says it all...a fit Upson would of been good..alas we will never know..
Stevosevic Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Man United pay Rooney 300k a week, I doubt that pisses off their players that are on 50k.
m4DD0gg Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Wonder if the same folk made the same negative comments when we brought Cottee back from Malaysia.....
john ridley Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Wonder if the same folk made the same negative comments when we brought Cottee back from Malaysia.....It also worked when we signed David speedie also ,no substitute for class
Ric Flair Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Wonder if the same folk made the same negative comments when we brought Cottee back from Malaysia..... People were going mad on teletext if I rightly recall.
Raj Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 I take all the comments FOR Defoe. Can't argue against any of them. Just my general pessimism shining through!!!
Danizen Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 I ain't over excited for some reason? Always think the worst-will his wages create tension within a good squad? For we need a mercenary here just for £££?? Sooner have Aaron Lennon I don't think so. If one of our players who has just come up from the Championship and hasn't covered himself in glory in the Premier League wonders why he isn't on £50k/week then he's the problem, not Defoe.
deep blue Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 No doubting his goal scoring ability and exactly the type of player we need. My only concern is he hasn't played since October through injury and may need to get back to full match fitness. I remember people saying Cottee and Dickov were past it and they didn't do to bad for us. Hopfully it works out. Fair comment but, as I recall, it took Cottee months to get sufficiently match fit before he forced himself into the team. If it took Defoe just a month to get to that stage then it might be too late to save us. Not saying he will take that long, but it's a cautionary consideration.

How much would defo want here a week???
Legend_in_blue Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 This reminds me of the signing of Tony Cottee. We all know how that turned out. Pull this one off and I'll be impressed. Doesn't matter how old he is, he knows how to score.
Guest Col city fan Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Sorry chaps, I've just never been sure of this 'ageing player, having gone to the MLS, only to return to the Prem to be expected to still cut it', thing, to really be the way I'd go. Fair play, Lampard has shown some still can shine in the Prem, but is Defoe's record (11 in 19), for a marquee signing in the MLS REALLY that impressive. I gotta be careful here because this could very quickly result in another 'Col's knocking another signing before he's even joined' type scenario. And we know where that leads.. But no, I don't think it's the way I'd go personally. I also think if Defoe WAS about to sign for QPR, as in, a done deal, the forum would probably be writing what I'm writing...that Defoe is probably well past his best and will be expensive, wages wise. Harry would probably be castigated for signing 'yet another' old favourite on 'ridiculous wages' etc. But, as always, I'm happy to be proven wrong and he'll get my backing should he sign.
dannythefox Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Is it unthinkable that he might not have the right attitude having gone to the MLS or that he might have lost his touch a little? I get so bored of these little phrases implying that those who don't agree 'aren't thinking properly'. You don't sound intelligent or convincing. The only person's who's definitely wrong here is you claiming you know that he'd be good signing. You don't. a proven scorer is what we're missing and he's that fact. You'd probably be one of the people moaning if we signed messi.

There you go again Col...just can't fooking Help...oh hang on...i DO agree with you!!!..!I accept the positive comments FOR him but defo got reservations about signing him on his wages and like you say this ain't no MLS!
whoareyaaa Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 he has always being used as a bit part player if he plays consistently and doesn't pick up any injuries then he will score more than any other striker we have. for that reason alone we should bring him in plus he has bags of experience and can score from the bench if required like he has done most of his career. we need a goalscorer this is the best on offer for the situation we're in it makes sense he's better than all our current strikers.

I find that a little bit of a turn on you saucy rascal...
Finnegan Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 Eh. I love signing kids with potential and obscure foreign gems but right now we need a quick fix. Defoe is probably the most readily available goal scorer that knows this league backwards and pretty consistently scores at this level. He's only got to last half a season, his age is irrelevant. If he keeps us up he's done his job.
Raj Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 ...watch your old ticker lad!!! Seriously though...Gerrard on.80k a week her til end of season-PLEASE. Lamps -90k-Yes..actually they'd be about double that!! ...Drogba yes....Top Top prem experienced oldie For.massive wages YES. ..Defoe as he is now playing mickey mouse league on 70k??...hhhmmmm
weller54 Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 If he keeps us in the prem then £75k a week is an absolute bargain!!!
Kitchandro Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 I'd be happy with this. Feel free to quote me if he turns out to be garbage.

If he keeps us up he's done his job. Yep, I do get that. That makes sense. I hope though that we don't sign Defoe at the expense of signing another striker, which would be probable. Putting all your eggs in one basket....in a 32 yr old, having to get up to speed having played in the MLS and who, I think, has always been injury prone, is a little risky. As you say though, if he joins and scores the goals to keep us up, money well spent..
Raj Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 He'd not sign for a club north of Watford gap anyway!!!
volpeazzurro Posted 3 January 2015 Posted 3 January 2015 The Cottee analogy sprang to mind for me also. Personally whilst he still imo may have the ability, it's the fitness that worries me also. Hasn't he largely been injured and not played since October with a hamstring or similar problem?
