One of the biggest surprises of our awful run that season, at least for me, was that Pearson kept playing Keane and Kane.

Both, at that time, were just not up to the job as the season panned out.

Keane might not be the best CB the world has ever seen, but the criticism is a bit uncalled for. Granted, he played badly both with and against us and his lack of pace and his bad positioning were exposed on more than just one occasion, but that doesn't make him a bad defender.

Derby still had the 7th best defensive record last season.

We can tell our own tales of Leicester players who many regarded as unfit or not good enough to make the step up for our Premier League season - and look how we're doing at the moment.

Only time will tell whether Burnley made the purchase of a lifetime or will curse themselves after half a year or so.

Keane wasn't awful and he could pass the football well for a defender but he wasn't very good in the air, physically on the weak side for a defender, and inexperienced with his positioning.

Lies, damned lies and statistics. While I do think Keane is pretty average, what those stats don't take into account is the fact that the team around Keane capitulated, and we'd quickly turned into a long ball team with absolutely zero confidence. Keane by no means helped arrest our slide, but it's also pretty harsh to say he was a key cause of it.

That's all I'm saying too. Bang average when he played for us. The stats just back this up.

Agreed. I'm sure both must have had clauses in their loan contracts that they had to play if fit.  it's noticeable that the following season our loan players didn't feature as heavily as Keane and Kane did - probably an indication that we'd learnt from our mistakes and refused to guarantee loan players pitch time.

Keane was average and made Morgan play badly because Morgan was not only worrying about his own positioning, but keane's too. This also made Schmeichel shaky around the 6 yard box.

This is bollocks.

What is with our fans tendency to denounce all our former players as shit?

Whilst I wouldn't take Keane over Wasyl, he really isn't that far away.

He was fantastic for us during his loan spell and doesn't need to be shouted down as shit just because we have come on leaps and bounds since then.

I suppose you rated Ryan McGivern as well?

Quick bump, if you don't mind. Looks every inch a Premier League player. He's made the second centre half position his own, looks better every week.

Can't wait to stick Vardy on him down at your place.

lol he couldn't cope at all when playing for Derby.

Careful though he may be spending the season practicing how to deal with him ;)

I agree with you. Really rated him when he was here. He's classy and will only get better

I didn't notice that Burnley snagged him. That's a shame. Would have been good cover for us, I wonder why we weren't in?

cover? we've got upson, Moore, waz, Morgan we don't need anymore cover in that department.

i thought he was class at such a young age when he was here tbf

Our defence totally fell apart with him in it.

That said he's the only defender we've had since McAuley who looked capable of scoring from set pieces.

yeah that's true - did think he looked good individually though, maybe it was the inexperience.

Fair play to him. Had some dodgy moments as any young CB does but he looked the part in January '13 when we were on a winning run and had the tightest defence in the Championship. Unfair to pin that much blame squarely on him for the nightmare run afterwards. Obviously he got ripped to shreds in the Derby match last season but most of their side did in that game.

Looked in decent nick at the KP this season and by all accounts he's performed for Burnley this season. He has a good future in the game whether people on here like it or not. I wish him well anyway, just not that well for the rest of this season and certainly not for when we play them again.

PS rer rer rer big-spending Burnley etc etc
