What on the roads has annoyed you today?

Recommended Posts

old drivers - one elderly driver ignored the idea of giving way to oncoming traffic turning left (he was turning right). He's meant to give way and tried to cut me up turning off the junction in to one lane.

people not keeping dogs on a leash - driving along a main road today. One car in front of me. Lady was running with her dog and had a friend cycling behind her. Dog running with them. All of a sudden, the dog bolted right and ran towards the road and went head first in to the side of a car. Then carried on running round in circles across the road. Luckily didn't get hit by the bus on the other side of the road otherwise probably would have been a goner

Two old people drove straight over the same zebra crossing on seperate occasions yesterday. Both times as I was about to cross. Neither of them even slowed slightly, just drove through like there was no road markings or traffic calming measure in place. Absolutely no awareness. Dread to think of what would have happened had someone been halfway across.

Was driving in a 20 zone yesterday when an ambulance comes blaring down the road from behind so all the cars pulled over to let it speed through... Followed swiftly by a porsche driver using the ambulance as its own personal traffic plough.

And yes it definitely wasn't with anyone in the back of the ambulance since it came to a halt a few metres ahead of me so the driver could get out and gesticulate at the porsche driver who swiftly rounded them and sped off.  Wtf.

Fairly certain you're not allowed to follow an ambulance through traffic under any circumstance - they occasionally have an unmarked police escort but as you say this wasn't the case. The good thing is if the Porsche driver was reported by the ambulance driver, they'll get in big trouble - I think the offence falls under Dangerous Driving, so could even be an instant ban

I commute by motorcycle and filter wherever possible, ambulances regularly slow me down especially around town centre - I pull over with the rest of traffic and wait until everyone's got back in position before starting to filter again. Don't see ambulance chasers very often but it pisses me right off when I do

I've had the opposite experience as well, where a boy racer thought it was smart to pull out of traffic and deliberately block our path and then weave in as if to let us pass only then to pull out again. This happened 3 times before we got past him. He was reported to the police but I don't know the outcome. I think the offence is "prevention of an emergency worker from performing their duty" or something like that.

I also remember once or twice when we had "walk-through" access from cab to rear, I was in the passenger seat and we were being tailgated pretty much as described above. I walked through and opened the back doors and flicked the V's at the driver behind. The look on the faces was priceless!

The bus lane on Lutterworth Road is dangerous.

I was going to turn left into Gilmorton Avenue earlier on when this knob in a silver Beamer screamed by the inside (in the bus lane). I just managed to turn the steering wheel back straight and must have missed not driving into him by a few inches.

The amount of times I see cars in that bus lane.....

It's just not monitored and as such, pointless.

Wasn't sure where to put this. But on the B582 road in Wigston (very near the SLC college), I noticed this road sign for anyone who might need to know it. I was walking by so thought I'd take a quick pic. It's a sideways image sorry for that...

There's a set of lights at the end of my road on the way to work where the right-turn lane (the one I have to use) gets such a stupidly short green phase that I've never seen more than 4 cars ever get going quick enough to make it through before being stopped for another minute while the straight-on lane from the same road gets a good 30 second block at least.  This morning 2 of the 4 cars ahead of me in the right-turn lane actually wanted to go straight ahead when the green light came on and because of their twattish presence just one car using the lane correctly was able to get through the lights...  It wouldn't have affected my own journey time but guy #4 ahead of me must have been fuming even more than I was.

The idiot woman today. I was driving along New Parks Way where the two lanes after the traffic lights merge into one. I was in the outer lane going straight on and was alongside a gap between the car in front and the woman behind, intending to merge in turn as you should. She was having none of it and accelerated hard to close the gap I was intending to  move into. As a result I had to brake and give way before I was forced to cross the centre line. I sounded my horn and the inevitable happened. She stuck her right arm out the window and gave me the finger.

Stupid, selfish, ignorant bitch.

I drove to Felixstowe and back from Buckinghamshire yesterday. A41, M25, A12, A14, simple. Thought it would be a nice trip for a couple of hours each way on a Saturday - but how wrong I was....

Maybe it's because most of my trip was through Essex but I was amazed at the amount of tailgating, speeding, undertaking and general recklessness on the roads. I know I'm getting old, but it just seems to get more and more dangerous on the roads these days. I'm glad I can 'let the train take the strain' most of the time with work, and there's no way I'd ever commute in the car again. I was touching cloth a few times on the way home and let out a genuine sigh of relief when I got home. Felt like a real ordeal and a survival exercise and so happy I got back in one piece. Can't believe I'm starting to feel scared on the roads these days...

I genuinely think it is a bit of an age thing mate....I feel the same.

Then again, I've never really been a mad driver, even when I had quick hatches in my 20's..I still drove them pretty 'sensibly' if you like.

Ive had far more near misses on fast motorbikes and there for the Grace of God, I'm still here to tell the tale.

The roads are just different now. Far more stop/start...more lights, speed bumps, cameras, just more traffic on the roads per se. I've picked a bigger, more sturdy car recently (a Rover 75 v6) which is quick enough, but feels 'safe' as its so planted.

1)  Car in front emergency braking at 60mph on an empty road. Then indicating to pull in. C#nts don't realise indicate then slow down. If you want to pull over at a certain spot and you are on it before you realise - go past and turn around when safe to do so. That is what I do and that is what you are supposed to do.

2) BMW driver pulling out in front of me when I am doing 60mph on a straight road (national speed limit). I had to brake very hard (skid marks on road) to avoid going into the back of her. One - the stupid cow didn't look and two - if she had looked she should have accelerated sharply to avoid an incident. Needless to say she got the horn. She then pulled over to let me pass... clearly bottled it. Well she needed to learn.

F***** indecisive taxi driver nearly cleaning up me and my kids after changing his mind having passed through a green light to turn right, then decides to drive round all the road furniture to carry straight on, over the pedestrian crossing which I'm using with my kids because there's a green man.  Dude, driving is your job, you really should be better at it.

The children were subjected to some very coarse language (not directed at them I might add)

Coming into Syston from Wreake Valley/East Goscote there is a huge cycle path. You could drive a bus down it, yet still people decide to cycle on the road.

There were probably loads of pedestrians aimlessly wandering along them if they're anything like the ones around my way

I've been driving in Orlando on holiday for the last few days and can't get to grips with the motorways. There seems to be no slow lane, middle lane or fast lane like we have, and it's more of a 'free for all' with constant undertaking appearing to be the norm. And then the inside lane keeps 'merging' with no fvckin prior notice which is freaking me out. The whole things just back to front really. Why can't driving on the same side of the road be standard all over the world FFS. I don't ask for much...

Welcome to the joys of driving in he US! It's not too bad once you get used to it. Just drive defensively, someone will do the unexpected so you have to anticipate it.

Undertaking is the norm and no one is bothered about it. US drivers (twats excepted) tend to pick a lane and stay in it unlike in the UK, where everyone gets their tits in a ringer over lane hogging.

Undertaking at speed is dangerous and is frowned upon but slowly edging past someone is perfectly normal since people are aware of the probability of this happening.

Drivers stay away from the first lane because the junctions can be every mile or less and you will be constantly weaving in and out to pass slow traffic.

Be aware that someone coming on to the freeway will expect you to give way, another reason to be in the second lane when driving in and around the city.

If you're going to be there for a while, invest $5 in a pair of small convex mirrors that stick on the wing mirrors. They are great for seeing in the blind spots.

Great advice Smudge - cheers. I drove on the i4 to Disney and back today and pretty much stayed in the middle lane all the way. I hate middle lane hoggers in the UK but it kinda made sense today and was much less stressful!
