artursteppe Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 They haven't said he isn't a "good defender" the general consensus is that he is more comfortable going forward than he is defensively. He's essentially a left footed Marc Albrighton. Albeit it better at dead ball situations. He's perfectly suited to wingback in a 3-5-2. "the defensive side of his game is poor", was the quote I was referring to, which I thought probably meant he isn't a "good defender". Of course it may not mean that if you say so.
Dan Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 The Bundesliga is very open and attacking. The defences there by and large are terrible. I'd hazard a guess that the majority of full backs in that league aren't up to scratch defensively. Signing Fuchs makes me feel that we're either sticking with three centre backs, or that Konchesky AND Schlupp are going and we'll have another one lined up too. I'd like to hope the former as I think Schlupp has come on towards the end of last season. He's getting there.
artursteppe Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Great to know we have so many experts on the Bundesliga on this site.
Finnaldo Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Great to know we have so many experts on the Bundesliga on this site. I'm not an expert and I haven't claimed to be, this is the consensus from the Schalke and Austrian fans that have came on to the forum. If you want to argue with them, go ahead. I can only use what I've heard and that's from supporters of the club/country he's represented.
Webbo Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Great to know we have so many experts on the Bundesliga on this site. You're the one dismissing opinions. I'd never heard of him before yesterday. I'll wait until I see him before I make up my mind.
Finnegan Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Great to know we have so many experts on the Bundesliga on this site. Again, the Bundesliga is shown several nights a week on BT sports. It's not 1950 anymore, there's **** loads of European football on show. Dutch, Spanish, French, Italian and German top flights (and even German second division) are on telly as much as English football now. People seriously need to drop the inferiority complex and inverted snobbery every time someone actually knows more than them about another player. It's really not all that surprising. If we sign someone from the Polish second division or the Moldovan premier league then I'm completely down with the cynicism. But given Schalke were probably on telly last year more than QPR yet everyone considers themselves an expert on Caulker and Austin and co, I think a resounding "**** off" can be due to the next boring twat to start trying to passively aggressively suggest that people are over stating their knowledge of world sport. "Rant over" (sorry Matt.)

"Rant over" (sorry Matt.) The Bundesliga highlights are on at a more reasonable time of the day than the Football League highlights as well. I'll watch those highlights nearly every Saturday morning during the season whereas I'll hardly ever watch the Football League Show now we're in the PL
shailen Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Top bundesliga team that haven't offered him a new contract. I Used to think that way and then we signed Cambiasso.
Webbo Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 I Used to think that way and then we signed Cambiasso. I'm not saying he's a bad player it was more a reaction to he's played for a top Bundesliga team so he must be good defensively. Anyway Cambiasso was 34 this bloke is 29.
HighPeakFox Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Given the manner in which things appear to have been done, maybe he wanted away and a new challenge, and this was perhaps agreed some while ago on the basis of our survival..........

Anyway Cambiasso was 34 this bloke is 29. Don't get me wrong, I understand that he may not live up to the hype. John O'Shea and Wes Brown played for United for many years and they are pretty average. I just think it's possible to find some top quality players from certain clubs. There are some real examples in history, albeit in general if a player is released it is not generally a good sign http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2534091/Lewandowski-McManaman-Cambiasso-Ballack-Campbell-Larsson-Sportsmails-10-best-Bosman-transfers.html
Finn Claw II Posted 4 June 2015 Posted 4 June 2015 Schalke are consistently in the Champions League, even if he didn't quite cut it for them I'd wager he is good enough for us. albrighton was a reject also.

My Nads Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 Fuchs and now the interest in Sako. It looks more and more like Shulupp could be off.
bald reynard Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 Fuchs and now the interest in Sako. It looks more and more like Shulupp could be off. Agree with that assumption. It'll be a shame, but a DECENT bid (from Arsenal or whoever) should not be turned down.
benpicko Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 Fuchs and now the interest in Sako. It looks more and more like Shulupp could be off. I would much rather keep Schlupp than bring Sako in
SMX11 Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 I think it is more that we had no options on the left hand side.
Foxymcoxy Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 Fuchs replaces Konchesky Sako replaces Knocky If that is the way it pans out it is hard to argue with. Definitely strengthening the squad.
benpicko Posted 5 June 2015 Posted 5 June 2015 Fuchs replaces Konchesky Sako replaces Knocky Knocky left because with this system we had no reason to play him, and that was with basically only Schlupp competing for the left side. Now we've got Fuchs as well.
Dan Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Great to know we have so many experts on the Bundesliga on this site. Pretty sure you've dubbed yourself some kind of expert before (or words to that effect) so I'd get your own house in order first.
deep blue Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Agree with that assumption. It'll be a shame, but a DECENT bid (from Arsenal or whoever) should not be turned down. On the contrary, we should do everything we can to keep him. He is one of the key players in the squad that NP is developing for our future in the Prem.
Guest Col city fan Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 On the contrary, we should do everything we can to keep him. hornyhollthefox123 Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 On the contrary, we should do everything we can to keep him. He is one of the key players in the squad that NP is developing for our future in the Prem. Exactly. I was one of the first to criticise Jeff 18 months ago but when you look at how much he has improved over that time and how important he was to us this year it's integral we keep him. Maybe people still don't realise but raw pace and athleticism is so important to teams who don't necessarily have as high a standard of players technically. You only have to look at how our shape changed when Konchesky played a couple of games instead of him and how much that impacted us. Granted we have Fuchs now, but Jeff has improved no end and would be a huge shame if he went
HighPeakFox Posted 6 June 2015 Posted 6 June 2015 Losing Schlupp would be madness. He won 2 awards at the end of season bash, one from his own peers - that should speak volumes
