England v Ireland and Slovenia

A great time for England was in between 2000-2006, yep and that was under Sven can you believe. Score a lot of goals under him and played some attractive football aswell and looking back at the squad at the time, we had a decent team. Though there was something missing from that team though?

It wasn't though was it. Sven forced one of the most gifted midfielders this country has ever seen into international retirement because he wouldn't stop playing him on the left wing. He was the weakest manager we've had. He'd rather play shit football with a diamond or players out of position so that Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard could all start. I don't buy this "golden generation" stuff but it was still the best team we've had for a long time.

I agree that there is a lot of pressure and expectations on them but I'd have to agree with Dan. International football is at the very top of the game and there has to come a time where we perform or put a plan in place to ensure the next 20+ years don't follow in the same vain.

If the team of 98-06 couldn't win anything then i struggle to see how a team that comprises of players like Smalling, Townsend and Barkley will. I know I must sound really negative but I've just become so disillusioned with England. I only watched yesterday for Vardy

Yeah agree tbh but at the same time it's depressing because I can't see any changes that will be made any time soon. The same players will be picked.

To be honest the more it goes on the more I do wonder if there is a strong element of sponsor/FA influence in the teamsheets. How can so many managers be so reluctant to experiment?

I've always thought that was obvious. Still, it's more because dropping names would be signing your own p45 because the average fan is an idiot who won't accept Rooney being dropped, even if he's been nothing but a flat track bully since 2004.

That game was exactly the reason why I stopped watching England friendlies, awful.

They genuinely don't give a shit these days mind, you could tell most of them really didn't want to be there and if I'm honest I can understand it a bit after a long season, they must be sick of being flogged around the World by the FA for money.

I see where you're coming from but that argument doesn't sit well with me at all. They get paid handsomely to play the sport they love and get to represent their country. It should mean the world to them but unfortunately players nowadays are far too concerned about their own individual

It doesn't sit well with me either but that's the monster we've created ourselves with the Premier League, these guys simply don't want to be playing football in Ireland at 1pm on a Sunday after a long season. Add to that you've got players like Sterling who aren't even English and it's going to be ten times worse.

As you say, the individuals care about themselves now, I went to the Gazza premiere last night and the difference in the way he spoke about football to what you hear now was fascinating, he had two dreams, one was to play for England and the other was to walk up the Wembley steps and lift the FA Cup.

The dream now appears to be the biggest contract you can imagine and a million followers on Twitter.

100% this. Just seems like a job now rather than the love for the game

Gazza always wore his shirt in pride, problem today is that a few current England players find it a chore to play for England. Sometimes I think its caused by foreign managers who I think can turn the players against there national team.

it's true but it doesn't stop other players from other countries showing passion in similiar friendlies even players who play in the premier league, who earn huge wages.

Problem is when England players actually play in big games they simply can't raise their game, I believe it's a mental toughness they lack.  For some reason English players (with the odd exception) put their club before country, at the end of the day they do want to win the World Cup but aren't good enough, maybe they know that.

I can't believe there are fans out there who truly believe we can win major tournaments I think I find that more frustrating than Englands continued failings and poor performances.

We will fail in the Euro's, we all will discuss why and we will all state it's either the managers fault, a grassroots problem etc etc...It is the same discussion we've been having for years and will continue to have for years to come, it's becoming really dull and just like Mattp it's one of the reasons I don't watch us anymore.  I still want us to win but I just can't bare watching us under perform all the time.

Frankly, you lot are setting your sights too high.

Let's embrace the failure.

Let's accept we are simply not a front rank footballing nation and celebrate if we get out of the group at tournaments.

Let's once again be gutted when we lose on penalties to Portugal or whoever and console ourselves that if things had been slightly different or we'd had the rub of the green, we might have won...

It could be worse, we could be Scottish.

The media create a feeling of "there's no expectation so we might do well" but it gets repeated that often that it just turns into "we'll do well".

I don't think Hodgson helps with the turgid, turgid football.

Miserable buggers the whole lot of you...

It was a EOS/ close season friendly, with major players just preparing for the next qualifier.

These type of games mean diddlysquat , nada, niente, gar nichts, rien.

On these games, I totally ignore the critic and praise.

on selection, Hodgsons failure, was not to run out Walcott for longer, and not to play Austin,Vardy, together over the last 30 minutes.

Then again, like England managers before him over the last 50yrs, England fail to look at newboys, or guys coming from injury.

But fellas, be fair we often played in the 70s,80s,90s great friendlies, then avg in qualies, and tournaments.

Accept world ratings, we have never really been in top 3, Rarely top 6, bottom out somewhere between top 6 - 12th.

Take then a realistic view point, support England has a top 8 side, not automatic WC/EC winners, who should be achieving

and reaching regular finals. If after 56 yrs the penny hasnt dropped, your just deluding yourselves.

England...we are what we are, nothing more.

I can accept not being a top nation for now - but I can't accept not even striving to be.

Never even realised Martin O'Neill was Ireland's manager. Thought he would have installed some enthusiasm and fight into the players.

Just out of interest just say Hodgson resigned tomorrow, who would you like to replace him with?

Gary Neville.

Or try and doing everything to get Mourinho.

Posted

Players from the top 4/5 clubs playing for England is like them playing for a mid table PL team treading water to stay in touch with the better teams with little or no chance of winning anything worth while and ultimately just playing for the money/kudos (which = more money) it brings.

Mourinho was interested after McClaren was sacked and I believe he was the first choice before they went for Capello, but for some reason he changed his mind.

Maybe Klinsmann would be a good candidate, yeah he's german but who cares. However I think it would be difficult to lure him away from the USA. Why Klinsmann? Doing alright at the United States, previously managed Germany and did a good job. Along with that he's played in England unlike previous foreign England managers in Capello and Sven.

Can't see Vardy (Or Austin, most pointless call up ever? What was the point if he wasn't gonna be used and tested, doubt he'll get his chance in a qualifier - if they were gonna give him a run out it should have been last week) featuring at any point today.

It's ok just continue with the amazing talent that is Stirling...

I completely agree Matt.

There's still talk today of Harry Kane going to Man Utd.

I thought that Harry Kane had a burning desire to want success and to play for Tottenham? Already, it seems, there's a chance of him going to Utd for presumably silly money, to probably warm a bench for 50 per cent of the season. He might not go, of course (he might actually do what he's said he wants to do and continue to play for Spurs).

But these kids get far too much, too quickly and it's just not the game it was twenty years ago in any respect.

Harry..stay at Tottenham, continue to earn well, develop as a good young player, and then see what your next step is. Tell your agent to go and bollox? Just a thought,

You never know Matt!

What times KO?

5PM.

I'll be watching in hope but really can't see it, hope i'm wrong and hope if he does well proves people wrong and scores to shut a few people up. (Once upon a time that was me lol).
