Europa League 2015/2016

They devalued the Europa league when they expanded the CL.  Seems like a pretty pointless competiton thesedays.  Tiny attendances early on, way too many games.

great game last night great atmosphere one great team one great goalkeeper just a shame it all happened on a thursday night really.

So why bother up until now then?

Pathetic effort again. The attitude shown by English clubs to the Europa League is embarrassing. They deserve to lose a place.

You'd feel a bit annoyed if you were a Spurs fan who'd travelled to Dortmund (which is something of a "destination" in football terms) to watch your team, only for the gaffer to pick a very weakened team and get spanked.

I was hoping Spurs would nick it to add to their fixture congestion, but I don't think they'll even try to turn this one round. Expect the reserves again at the Lane I think.

EL is a great tournament these days, it is a shame the English attitude towards it is so arrogant. Seems as though sides like Spurs et al almost embarrassed to compete (and embarrassingly, fail) in a tournament that both Boro and Fulham have got to the final of in last 10 years.

The Thursday - Sunday argument is lunatic aswell. How is it different to playing Wednesday - Saturday? Or Saturday -Tuesday? Offers a handy in-vogue excuse for those peddling it but seems complete bollocks to me.

Also Thursday nights are decent for Euro away trips. Means you can take just two days off work and get a good long boozy weekend away. Really need 3 off minimum for the CL.

Add in the potential for obscure venues like FK Sarajevo, Qabala and Dinamo Minsk and you've got yourself a great tournoi. I'm a fan.

They've done that the whole way through the tournament... What do you mean why bother till now?

Why get this far just to pretty much surrender their place at this stage?

Slight difference to playing Anderlecht, Monaco and Qarabag to Dortmund.

We've got the richest clubs in the world yet still act like it's impossible for us to compete in multiple competitions.

England deserve to lose a place for the arrogance alone, let alone the regular awful showings.

I will be furious if we treat Europe like this.

Well, I think you can't really avoid it in the long run. Even if we reached a Champions League or Europa League group or post-group stage phase ourselves, we'd have to rotate.

No way would we want to keep the same starting XI turning up for two games a week without potentially risking further title challenges.

It's a great idea on paper and worth a try, but which manager would want to endanger squad harmony or general fitness levels.

But other clubs outside of these isles seemingly have no problem playing the same players week in week out, we seem obsessed about resting players.

But resting players against Dortmund to ready them for a game against the most dismal PL outfit since Derby?

I think a difference with clubs like Sevilla and Dortmund is that they have better strength in depth.

Anyhow... I've had a random one here... Athletic Club to win the Europa.

I suppose they believe their main target should still be an attempt at regaining that PL leader position from us (because it's probably now or never), whilst letting youngsters and second-stringers gain valuable match practice on a European level.

Lazio out against Sparta Prague - 4-1 on aggregate to the Czechs! lol

This is getting ridiculous - all I can hope for now is for Basel to hold the Swiss flag up high, defend our standing in the UEFA coefficient race and bring home an absolute steal of an away win at Sevilla.

I know it's unlikely, but there's always hope. :fc:

Bet you somewhere somebody's saying that it's our fault they fielded a weakened side and they'd have done better if they didn't need to worry about us in the league.

Coutinho bossing it there, quality player.

Amazing De Gea?

No point making world class saves if you can't get your angles right.

Coutinho did everything right, but he could've just rolled it across the floor the amount of space at the near post.

yeah no point saving shots. what would be the point in that, right?

Well he didn't try for Coutinho's.....

he left a bigger gap at the near post than the far.

Never understand that.

Its fine to concede at the far post but never near post!

There's not special bonus points. He's obviously gambled that coutinho is going across goal so goes down.

No one can accuse us of ruining the co-efficient when you have the likes of Spurs and West Ham pretty much throwing Europa League ties and the bigger teams are constantly struggling.
