TheMightySystem Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 This quote got me wondering who people think would be called up, if at all, from the youth set up and into the first team. I personally think Choudary, Chilwell, Panayiotou, Barmby, McCourt and Lawrence are good enough to at least be given a run out in the cup competitions.
Captain... Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 OMG it is like Sven all over again, he played Schlupp and look what happened there!!!! [/sarcasm] Claudio is making all the right noises, lets see if he delivers.
Dan Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Pearson's track record with youth players wasn't particularly notable but I wouldn't say there's many he's really been harsh about the chances he's given to them. Gradel is the obvious example but I still to this day don't think he was anything special for us at all. Making the right noises though Ranieri is.
MPH Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 He's got no bloody option but to blood in some youth unless he pulls his finger out....
Buzzell Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Deffo give Chilwell a look in. He looks a very decent talent.
Ric Flair Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 The problem Chilwell has is he's got Fuchs and Schlupp in his way. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cain, Choudhury and Watson heavily involved in the friendlies given our lack of midfielders.
RowlattsFox Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Chance for Tom Lawrence to make an impression at the minute with the lack of midfielders.
Ashley Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Ben Chilwell will be a future England left back, or in and around the squad at least. Choudhury is a very exciting prospect too. Would expect Ryan Watson to go out on loan soon heard good things about him.
Raw Dykes Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Chance for Tom Lawrence to make an impression at the minute with the lack of midfielders. He's a winger, though, isn't he? I don't think he can play central midfield, where we are short.
RowlattsFox Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 He's a winger, though, isn't he? I don't think he can play central midfield, where we are short. He can play as part of a 3 though. In the role mahrez finished the season in.
Raw Dykes Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 He can play as part of a 3 though. In the role mahrez finished the season in. Well, he's still got Mahrez, Nugent and Okazaki ahead of him, then.
LCFC FOX Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 excited for Chilwell. Hopefully he delivers. Think choudoury may get a shot this year too. Obviously only expecting the cup competitions. Did we sign Watson like we did Lawrence or is he from the academy?
Suffolk exile Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 If they are really good enough, I really hope they start to get a chance, be it with us, or with a suitable club on loan.
emmpii8 Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Too early for Choudhary. Maybe next year or the year after. Perhaps Sesay and Paniyotou will step up. Also Blyth. Gotta see how he picks up after his injury. Michael Cain would be my pick. Probably made the most success at the club as well as on loan. (Tom Hopper could have been here...) After Cain there's Chilwell but I don't think his turn will come soon. Maybe a few opportunies during the season
Finnaldo Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Cain is a good shout actually, Walsall fans seemed to rave about him last season, could see him being in contention for a call-up as a fringe player or at least a loan to a decent Championship club who want to take him on.
Stadt Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 Why do people make such outlandish claims about youth team players? There's probably a few with the potential to be first team players but its far too early to suggest they're going to be england players simply because it's not as simple as saying look how good they are now that means they'll be this good in 3 years time
dormelcfc Posted 20 July 2015 Posted 20 July 2015 I think Chilwell is a really good call. Having seen a lot of the PR on Twitter and YouTube, he seems to still be training with the first team. I'm not sure if this is the case with any others from the U21s but it can only bode well for the lad. Maybe CR rates him after what he saw in Austria etc?
Thracian Posted 21 July 2015 Posted 21 July 2015 The better we get the harder it will be for youngsters to break through - and the greater the risks for the manager if he tries to bring them through and fails. We're in danger of becoming just like the bigger clubs whereby we stockpile talent and loan them out to lesser clubs to develop them. In the end I just think so much talent will go to waste. Southampton are one of the few clubs who seem to have a determination to bring players through. We should have a target of bringing through so many each season or couple of seasons. It would provide the commitment necessary and even greater incentive for those who might benefit. As it is, even reading the views on here over the years, it's clear that, so some, the youngsters will never be ready. They'd prefer us to sign some exotic-sounding incomer with lots of international caps. Anyone remember Kaebi and the sub-standard foreign legion from Mandaric's time, at least one of whom was never fit as I can recall?. Even the Cambiasso saga irritates. The guy is worshipped but still remains undecided about the club. Someone like Kingy commits himself wholeheartedly season after season yet I'd doubt his popularity - appreciated as he is by many - would ever match Cambiasso's. Strange values, but please don't get me wrong. Cambiasso's been good for our club. Perhaps not as good as Huth, or even Kingy given all he's done and the improvement in our results when he was back in the side for our dramatic recovery run, but you cannot doubt Cambiasso's class for all that he has weaknesses as well. I hope he signs because, either way, we will import someone rather than elevating one of our own, yet, to me, there's a special pride in developing players ourselves. Otherwise, as I've touched on before, the Academy set-up is nothing more than an expensive social service. And one we don't, as yet, see anything like enough return on. In part because we don't generally seem to complete the development of players successfully. But also because we don't quite find the lasting opportunity for them. In the end, emerging youngsters don't need "a chance" in the first team they need a commitment. Vardy's one of the best examples where development is concerned. At first he struggles with a new situation. But, with patience, the bloke adjusts and shows himself well able to cope. Yet how many people on here wrote him off as a trier who wasn't quite good enough? Giving people time to adjust is the hardest part. Especially if results go badly. We've persisted with Schlupp and seen some benefit. We just don't do it often enough. Some might say the talent's just not there to be worked on. To which I'd answer that we should be more selective in who we do sign and more accomplished in getting the best from them. I can't be bothered to add up the numbers precisely but would guess we've established, or nearly established, close to one player per season in the last decade or so. King, Stearman, Mattock, Wesolowski (?), Gradel (?), Sheehan (?), Moore (?) and Schlupp come to mind and there might be the odd one I've forgotten. It's nowhere near good enough. The target should be two per season at least. And even of the ones I've listed, only two or three might be deemed genuine first team quality during that time.
Crinklyfox Posted 21 July 2015 Posted 21 July 2015 I'm all for bringing players with true potential through the ranks, however the Premier League is a high standard and many players simply won't make the grade. It's the skill of the manager and coaches to determine if a player truly has the ability and potential to be a PL player. We have to recognise that we are in a competitive league and that the difference between survival and relegation is just a few points. Putting a developing player into the first team has to be carefully managed such that it doesn't cost us our PL status.
GingerrrFox Posted 21 July 2015 Posted 21 July 2015 Hamza will be training with the first team very soon. I've seen a lot of him and the kid can play. He's exactly the type of midfielder we are lacking around the first team squad. Ranieri knows talent and that kid has got endless potential.

The Railway Man Posted 21 July 2015 Posted 21 July 2015 OMG it is like Sven all over again, he played Schlupp and look what happened there!!!! Yeah he looked shit at left back and then shit up front. I like the fact we want to play youth team players but we have to be realistic, if we are looking to be a top ten PL team very few will make the grade and those that do will have to be exceptional, what we have produced over the last twenty years for a City our size is pretty shocking tbh.
