UK nightclubs closing at 'alarming rate', industry figures suggest

Nearly half the UK's nightclubs have shut their doors in just 10 years, according to figures seen by Newsbeat.

The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR), which represents venues, says in 2005 there were 3,144 clubs and this is now down to 1,733.

Chief Executive Kate Nicholls reckons that in some towns "they are gone for good and we're never going to get them back".

But people like Rudimental have told us that clubbing trends "go in cycles".

The ALMR warns the closures will leave the UK worse off "culturally, socially and economically".

It classes a club as a place meant for "late night entertainment, usually music and dancing".

Havent been out in Leicester nightclubs for years. Just full of dickheads wanting to start fights for no reason. Bars are much better for a decent nightlife. Not that i go out much anyway as id rather spend my money on the kids

Surely this is simply a side effect of pubs opening later? Back in the day when we went out on a Friday / Saturday night, the pubs shut at 11 so it was logical to join the queue for the nightclub. Now pubs open until the wee small hours, there is no longer a need as such for the "nightclub"

I'm 35 now and don't think I've set foot in a nightclub since my very early 20's.

Too many pi**ed up idiots going about looking for trouble.

Leicester's Nightclubs are shit anyway, tend to stick to bars

This. When I go out, it usually to go out with my friends and have a laugh and it's hard to have a laugh with your mates in a club because the music is so loud you can barely talk (other than the smoking area). Whenever I go to clubs I end up in the smoking area the most just because its the only place you can usually talk to people and I don't even smoke.

A lot more bars that act as 'mini clubs' which lets people hop from one place to the next without having to pay an entry fee and be stuck in one place all night.

I can't stand most dance music and getting sweaty with pilled-up arseholes (not suppositories) so no.

I did used to enjoy Mosh few years ago but I'm late 20's now and feel like a dirty old man in there, they all look about 16. The music's alright, and the last couple of times I went the basement DJ put on everything I requested, which is awesome

Hasn't that always been the case?

Bars are a thousand times better than clubs and now open late.

Clubs are done.

Most bars are only open, typically, until 11:00 on weekdays - I don't consider that as very late.

Also, most are only open until midnight on Saturdays.

You'd have to get me totally blazed to go in Mosh and I'm pretty sure even then I'd feel like Adam Johnson at a Secondary School leaving party.

really turned on?

Not any more, I haven't really enjoyed them whenever I've been recently.

It was always a fantastic laugh at uni but since then it's always been a bit shit. Bars are King now.

I went clubbing quite regularly for about 8 weeks in 2003.  Hope this helps.

Someone in our party was denied entry into Mosh a couple of years later, basically because they were too old, and you knew then that the sands of time were fast running out as far as that particular game was concerned.

I always found it a bit of an endurance test even when I was younger, and given how miserable and aggressive a lot of folk seem to be on big nights out I'm not the only one
