Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 Oh yeah insurance. If you're under 25 your first policy will probably be about £800, even for a really modest car. Make sure you get quotes first as that may determine what car you can actually afford to run
Larry_LCFC Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 I had a 1.6 VW Golf Mk4 in white. Decent car tbh.
Soar Fox Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 Peugeot 106 quicksilver. Man they were cool in 2005 when I was 17.

Guest Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 Or just get your parents to buy you a car and pay for the insurance until you are at least 25. Problem solved.
Detroit Blues Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 I had this beauty - If you're spending 1k on a car, the most you can hope is for it not to break down too much. The above car lasted a couple years and had a variety of problems: bad weather stripping, shocks that I had to replace, and a fuse that would always blow. It's just something you deal with until you can afford a car with far fewer miles on it.

davieG Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 Diggin that Austin van Dave. Yes it was good fun wasn't that old and was bought because they were cheaper than cars being VAT free. Drove all the way to Cornwall in it pre M69/M5 days and it took us 6 hours. Was a rot box within a few years although they had a chassis in those days. One amusing incident was driving down Abbey Lane towards what was then a traffic island at the Abbey Park junction, I slowed down to see if there was anything approaching from my right saw there wasn't, put my foot down to go round the island and my mate in the passenger seat disappeared into the back of the van. We found out that the front passenger seat was just held down by two flimsy brackets.
AndWhat? Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 A Fiat Punto that me and my mates named the Fiat Cunto. 17 year old me was hilarious
The Quick Brown Fox Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 I had a mini Mayfair, I would swap my audi for it now. She was my first love and I miss her every day.
Guest Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 My car history is pretty middle of the road 86 Ford Escort to start (which had been through my whole family before I got it in 1997) 92/93 ford Escort 98 Mk3 VW Golf Alfa Romeo GTV - absolutely lovely car to look at but a frigging nightmare to maintain Then my 06 Mk5 Golf GTi which I've had for 8 years and still going strong. Bloody love it! I'd advise if you can afford it to start racking up those no claims years asap
Webbo Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 I honestly can't remember as I used to drive my dad's car and as they were usually banger he had about 4 different cars a year. I think the first one I bought for myself was a mini metro for £290. I gave it away when I could afford something better and the bloke who had it took it to a garage and found out that the engine wasn't actually fixed to the car and could have fell out anytime.

I sold my Hillman Avenger to a young lad at work for the £30 the scrap value he brought is Dad with him to look at it, I pointed out all the problems with it including how expensive it was to run. A couple of weeks later he wanted his money back claiming it only did 9 miles to the gallon. Told him to forget it and if he wanted is £30 to go take it to the scrap yard.
Crinklyfox Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 Mk 1 Ford Cortina - hand painted - I kid you not. More rust than car, lasted three months.
Wymsey Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 How long does it take for insurance to go down, after having accidents on record (had a few bumps in the past few years)? Haven't had a bump since January.
pSinatra Posted 18 September 2015 Posted 18 September 2015 A Peugeot 309. It cost me about £600 & was a heap of shit, but it kept going & going. If the engine was already warm you couldn't re-start the engine. If I pulled up at the shops, it was easier to leave the car running & hope it was still there when I got back. Had it for about 5 years & it lasted my time at university. The only decent thing was the stereo & that got nicked in Sheffield (including my Leftfield cassette). The stereo was worth more than the car.
