Sat in the home end yesterday. Leicester support sounded amazing and looked amazing too when everyone was holding their scarfs up before kick off . Atmosphere was dead in West Brom end, only time they sang was for about 2 minutes after Rondon scored.

Politics and sport should never mix unfortunately they often do. I love my country born and bred in England and have served with distinction in Hm Forces.

I have no sympathy for James Mclean however, a man who may have been born in Derry but he certainly was never around in 1972.

He lives under the freedom given to him by people who sacrificed themselves for their country including many Irishmen who died serving in both World Wars. It is an insult to these that he doesn't just not wear a poppy but he goes out of his way to advertise the fact.

Least not forget the many hundreds of innocent people killed and murdered by the Ira. Lord Louis Mountbatten to name but one and many more killed and murdered Birminham pub bombings, Regents Park Bandstand, Guildford, plus many atrocities in Ireland and yes, they still do exsist the Ira.

Many will disagree, that's the freedom we are provided. James Mclean has brought it all on himself and I have no sympathy whatsoever.

He may not have been born during the events of Bloody Sunday, but it'd be naive to the extreme to suggest they didn't have any sort of lasting impact on Derry, and let's be quite clear, the freedoms that the combatants of the two world wars fought for include the freedom of expression, including his freedom not to wear a poppy. Trying to shame him into doing so is frankly more of an insult to them than him not wearing one.

Every silver lining has a cloud eh?

Oh I wasn't trying to be negative. Just watching it with slightly less blue-tinted specs is all. We kept probing and scored the best goal of the day (Vardy). It could so easily have been a draw though, just like last week against Palace. We couldn't really have complained had WBA been given another peno, or had Palace gotten one last week. Long may our energy and rub of the green continue, I'm loving it just as much as the next one :)

If only everyone had enough between their ears to remember this.

Bravo.  ;)

There was no conscription in Ireland in the First World War. 200 000 volunteered and over 30 000 died. It is worth remembering them.

Nonetheless I think that poppies should not be forced on anyone who doesnt want one.

Commentary on the stream I watched was abysmal. Iain Dowie: "I'd need to see that (penalty claim) again. I think it was Kante. Or Morgan.....oh,no it was Huth"

Lead commentator, (not sure who he was): "Those three points keep Leicester in touch with fourth place".

Dowie very pro wba/anti City. Not particularly knowledgeable. AWFUL!

Pulis just sucks the life out of exciting players. Berahino will go that way. Couldn't imagine him trusting a Mahrez in his side.

He'll keep West Brom up and be widely praised for it but I find it strange how hardly any of the media question why he's so limited and cautious in his style.

Thank goodness we haven't got Pulis as manager. The guy seriously hates football.

You should know by now that the media, mostly, is the purveyor of lies and untruths.

Quite. I could have more sympathy with him if he wore a green poppy for all those that died at the hands of the IRA and "Loyalist" paramilitary.

First couple replays I thought Mahrez was well offside but seeing the line thing on MOTD it was bloody close.

For me the officials got it exactly right. Mahrez looked level to me but not level enough for there not to be even the slightest doubt one way or another in real time. If the benefit of any doubt should go to the attacker or you should only give what you see as fact then I don't see how either the linesman or referee could know for sure so surely they are right to allow play to continue.

totally agree. The idea of the poppy was to commemorate the conscripted soldiers who fought in ww1 and ww2. They were completely different types of wars to those in Iraq or Afghanistan (or indeed the Irish stuff in the 70s), which are basically invasions fought by professional soldiers. I hate the way the media have conflated them all so the poppy now represents a general support for everything the army do. The British army's presence in northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan does not have the slightest resemblance to ww1 and ww2 - pretending they are the same thing is a highly political act by the media, and its why issues like the maclean thing blow up in the way they do. id be more surprised if someone who grew up in derry was happy about wearing a poppy tbh, given the history of that city, and what the poppy has now become, thanks to rightwing press and politicians exploiting the memory of the dead for their own ends. embarrassing that city fans were singing ira stuff, shows they havent got a clue.

To anyone who didn't think Ulloa influenced the game: Go watch Mahrez's goals again.

Ulloa is identified as the target and is overmarked by West Brom giving Mahrez space to make 2 runs with space to dink in crosses from the 6 yard box. On both goals there were 3 closer to Ulloa than the nearest guy on Mahrez.

Was anyone on the train back from new street to Leicester when a load of Peterborough fans got on at Nuneaton.

I've never seen anything like it before I was embarrassed for them especially the chav girl that was with them.

The trouble is WW1 and WW2 are becoming distant memories and "Poppy Day" would probably die out without including later conflicts.

On a personal note, I wear my poppy with pride, visit the war graves in France on a fairly reglar basis to pay my respects and have applied in the ballot for tickets for the memorial service at Thiepval Wood next July 1st.

My grandparents and uncles/aunts fought in WW2 to ensure the freedoms we take for granted today. They wouldnt recognise the vinditive, PC world where only minorities have rights, that we now live in.

I don't personally agree with McLean, but he is entitled to his opinion. He hasn't hurt anyone. Browbeating him and anyone else into wear a poppy insults the memories of my forebears who fought against exactly this type of mind control.

I was. A few of them were very knowledgeable actually knew a fair bit about us and very complimentary about vardy etc. Had been to our place a few times in l1 and the following year. Seemed ok.

There were a few who had all the gear on. But looked about 16. Kept there mouths shut and heads down till we got of at Leicester then piped up as we left the carriage. Never mind.

Think we might talking about different trains, this was the 19.22 train.

Got on at Nuneaton started singing and shouting immediately and trying to take the piss until the police moved down.

When did this expectation that players would wear poppies on their shirts appear? I have no recollection of it all when I lived in England and went to games (70s to early 90s). I remember Remembrance Sunday as the day to reflect and show respect, but I am pretty sure that there were not Remembrance football fixtures. I have always thought of the poppies as a poignant symbol of the futility of the First World War and they don't seem at all well suited to the atmosphere at football matches, which is based on raw partisan emotion.

Same train mate. Must have been a different carriage. We didn't have any old bill near us and the 3 or 4 we spoke to had some decent knowledge of us now and from l1 etc.

Like I say we had a good chat with a few of them.

not sure when the football shirt thing started exactly, but its just symptomatic of a broader fetishisation of the army across society - which has been getting increasingly intense since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. i mean, i got on a tram yesterday which had a poppy painted on the side, completely ridiculous. Also connected perhaps to the anniversary of the start of ww1 last year, when we had Cameron etc banging on about how it was a war for 'freedom' - the last thing ww1 was about was freedom, it was about millions of ordinary working class men across Europe getting sent to a senseless death by the same aristocracy and royal family who are in charge today. its no coincidence that the less people actually know about the history of war, the British army and the empire, the more deranged the demand everyone and every inanimate object wears a poppy becomes.

Went to a party last night and when we got back and I was watching MOTD which I'd recorded the missus said that I seem to be in a lot better mood nowdays .....   when she woke up this morning and I was watching the live rerun of MOTD she said it again.     She cooked a lovely breakfast which I ate whilst reading the sport pages of the paper and she said how lovely weekends were with me always smiling ....  Then, after I'd watched Goals on Sunday whilst she did a bit of tidying up we went for a long walk with the dogs and she said what a great weekend we were having .....        Can't put my finger on it but I think she's right.    Any ideas ??

My grand father and his 3 brothers all signed up and fought in world war 2 , only two came home

My grandad was beaten up in the 1980's for wearing his beret and medals by thugs who disagreed with him remembering his brothers

His medals are mine now and I'm so proud of the effort he made as an Irish man

But I can't and don't wear a poppy

I stand out of respect for the english anthem , even if most of the English locals in my local pub never do !

And I love this country and its freedoms

England is the greatest country on the planet for all her issues and problems she a beacon for hope and oppertunity

And nearly every Irish man I know living if to have lived here thinks the same

Well said, I'm glad someone has written exactly what I was thinking yesterday. When we should have been supporting the team, a bunch of meatheads were singing about the IRA...WTF?! If it was supposed to be aimed at McClean, then that just shows the ignorance. Where has he ever showed support for the IRA? It was embarrassing to be amongst it to be honest. Sing for LCFC FFS.

Can't stand the poppy nazis. I'm sure most members of the armed forces that that have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms would despise it too.

Thank you
