Goals conceded

We have the worst goals against record in the top 14.

If goals were the only barometer as an attacking side we who should challenge for the title and a defence fighting off relegation.

Why are we conceding so many? Is it the personnel in defensive roles or the midfield not protecting the defence enough?

Is our defence & GK bottom six standard and are being flattered by our offensive players?

Are we just that gung ho as a team we're destined to score and concede lots of goals?

Whilst I'm obviously overjoyed at how we've performed this season the GA column needs to be addressed and is an obvious weakness and should be able to be improved upon relatively easily.

I'd like to think the club footballing analysts are compiling the data on how these goals are scored against us and maybe there's an underling theme?

How many goals conceded have been from set-pieces? Anybody know? Feels like a ton.

During the commentary of the Palace(?) game, Stringer said that it was only five, and that included conceding from second-phase play after a set-piece.

Somewhat surprising.

We concede a lot of sloppy goals. Tottenham, Villa (first goal although a great finish), Stoke (second goal) and West Brom (first goal) all spring to mind.

We just haven't got the Height to deal with teams with four or more 6 footers....

Set pieces are a major problem atm!

I'd agree with that, despite Huth being about 6,4" and Morgan 6,2" and even Fuchs 6,1" we always seem to struggle aerially.

It's not like in the MON days with Walsh, Elliott and Taggart and anything in the air pumped into our box was meat and drink for these boys.

Not many teams are good at both attacking and defending

As long as we score more goals than most of the other teams, then I'm not too concerned

I'm just enjoying the exiting brand of football that we are playing

That's not the point though, if we are to progress even further we need to try and improve on both and whilst we're very efficient offensively we can make much more improvement defensively.

We won't continue conceding an average of 2 per game

on the other hand, we also won't continue to score at the same rate.

Conceding too many freaked pearson out so he resorted to trying to shore up the defence. You would think that Claudio would be even more spooked by conceding so many goals. As soon as our goals dry up a bit, I guess we can expect something of an over reaction regarding protecting the defence.

certainly isn't going to be a predictable season

Bring in a decent right back or better yet play 3 at the back and we'd be fine.

It's certainly nothing to do with us being too attacking though, before anyone suggests it. We don't get caught on the break or short staffed, we're just sloppy.

I agree, but I'm not going to complain if we keep winning 3-2.

I'd rather that than 1-0.

It was awful last season when we weren't interested in scoring.

So improving the defence would be most welcome but not at the expense of scoring goals and entertaining.

Is it really that bad? Take away the game against Arsenal where they carved us open for fun and we are around the same as teams like a west Ham and Southampton etc.

We have let in a couple of sloppy ones but I think we are getting better slowly.

Only Arsenal have scored more than 2 past us this season.

This is the problem, but if we had the height we wouldn't be playing quick counter attacking football that brings the results because the players, as demonstrated by wba at the weekend, would be to slow, have little skill and all be knackered in the second half, which is where we seem to take control.

Even putting two top class centre backs won't solve the problem, the fullbacks get forwards and concede space - that's the drawback of very attacking football.

We can't have everything.

For the majority of last season, certainly during our extended stint at the bottom, NP put a team out that would compete and not give too much away at the expense of our attacking capabilities. Towards the end of last season when we had nothing to lose, the focus of our play was to attack more and this has continued this year.

As well as our defenders have played so far this season, I think they are at their limit of ability and until we take that next step in terms of quality, we have to be prepared to accept the number in the 'conceded' column rising.

Having said that, it does seem like we've been shipping goals at set pieces which can be improved by organising ourselves better and there have been some unfortunate goals as a result from individual mistakes.

I'm not that worried about goal difference as long as we're scoring. When the goals dry up but we're still conceding as many, then we need to address it.

Buy some expensive shoes ....   sorted.

We leak goals like no tomorrow.

Where do you begin to solve it?

Goals conceded since Arsenal:

Norwich - Set piece I believe

Southampton - two set pieces

Palace - clean sheet

WBA - set piece and a silly penalty.

That to me suggests it's not our attacking play that's making us leak goals, it's woeful defending from set pieces.

5 goals by Arsenal some what skews the result we could have easily just accepted it at 3-1 but went for it and conceded 2 more.

Villa were 2 goals conceded by over committing in the attack.

Sunderland were 2 goals conceded after we had won the game.

Really goals conceded is an irrelevant stat compared to wins and points.

I've said it before risk reward, if we approach games like we did against Spurs and Bournemouth, we won't concede as many but we won't win either.

That is not to say we can't tighten up at the back without sacrificing our attacking philosophy, particularly at set pieces, but really I don't care how many we concede I care how many points we have.

I much prefer it this way than the year we were relegated from the Championship with one of the best defensive records...

The likes of Morgan and Simpson are playing to the best of their ability so if we want to push through that limit we basically have no option but to buy better defenders.

That's not to say the current defenders are bad players, what we're talking about here is an improvement which would have seen us several points clear at the top of the premier league by now had we done it in the summer. The current players are good enough to get us where we are, but if we want even better than that then we need new players imho
