What would top 4 mean for us?

Celtic qualify for the Champions league every year. Are we saying they are better than us? Granted they don't get very far but at least they compete.

They do and were unlucky to only beat Barcelona once in the group stages when Barca were by far and away the best team in the world in 2012.

I don't think we'd embarrass ourselves. If we're capable of finishing top-4 then we would be capable of doing ok  against some of the eurotrash that ends up in the CL.

Talk about first world problems,  though.

It's pretty similar to the position Southampton were in last season.

I think it was around Christmas when people really started to think maybe they could make the top 4. They faded away but still had a fantastic season.

I'd be more than happy if we emulated that.

If by some miracle we did achieve it, it'd put us in the position to go out and buy an incredible back 4. Add real competition for places, so we'd be looking at Fuchs and Huth fighting for their places.

Further up the pitch, pretty much stick with what we've got, then build gradually, season by season, looking at consistently aiming for the top 6 and Europa League places.

true but is Leicester enough of a draw for top class players with or without Eurooean football?

it'd probably mean wed have to play in that stupid world cup competition after we win the champs league too

Champions League football will draw pretty much anybody, especially from a European team in and around the Europa League. We'll have cash to burn with the new TV deal kicking in.

Although at the wrong end of their careers, we've still managed to sell ourselves to the likes of Cambiasso, Inler and Fuchs.

There are some great places to live in and around the county and we're only an hour or so from London.

If Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and Dortmund can attract players to those cities, I don't see why we can't.

It's all hypothetical anyway. Would be a lovely problem to worry about in June!

I think we just carry on regardless, we know we need to continue to strengthen and with the scouting setup we have I suspect they have different players for different scenario's, i.e players whom we might not have a chance of signing but we want and these we may then be able to get should we get in to europe. I'd snap anyone's hand off now for a top 10 finish let alone top 4.

Never understood why people say they would snap someone's hand off for 'x'

It's not that I disagree with the fact that if even getting a top ten place would be a fantastic achievement. What bothers me about it is that if I knew now that we were going to finish a certain place, the rest of the season would be boring, I'd lose all the excitement and unpredictability of football. If someone said to me they have a magical power to ensure we finish 10th or I can watch the season unfold but anything could happen, there is absolutely no way I'd snap their hand off!

I know we can dream, but we won't finish top four. A europa league spot would be amazing and a great achievement. Having said that we should be content with a top 10 finish this season.

Beware the momentum. A finish of 9th or 10th could be disastrous re next season if it came off the back of a top six position in mid March. If we end up losing a whole chunk of our final 6 or 7 games (and we have some shockers in there) we start next season in precisely the opposite frame of mind to this one.

we could easily finish top 6 from where we are. I bet Claudio doesn't take on utd, Chelsea and citeh like he did the arse. The mantra will be not to lose those fixtures.

The thing is, I think he will.

It sounds like he's tried to implement the Italian defensive game to the players, but he's realised they can't do, so he thinks what the hell, let's just go for it!

He's always referring to the Italian way, knows it's not possible, so plays to our strengths.

Completely agree about momentum though. That's what went wrong under Taylor.

if we d finish top 4 then you add in some areas but if they are good enough to finish top 4 then they are good enough to play CL

Yeah you've sort of touched on my point. Not some mych talking about our chances in the champions league itself but just being a club at that level. Do the owners see it as the perfect chance to throw money at it and skip what would've been 3 or 4 years of steady progression. Probably not explaining myself very well.

Would a 'freak' season like this be beneficial to us in the long run or would we be better off carrying on in our sensible, steady journey that we've been on

I think a freak season would catapult us to a top 6 team if we used that position to purchase very well!!

We'd stick to our approach of buying players that want to be here, not players following the money. Probably make a sign a few players for around £15m each but we wouldn't spend more than £50m I think.

It would most likely mean Don Claudio has been leaving horses' heads in a lot of officials' beds.

Really it would mean that 3 of Chelsea/Spurs/United/Liverpool really fvcked up, it would also mean that we would be onto a hiding in the CL.

This season I would love us to get in the Europa League, either via the league or the cup, and that would be a phenomenal achievement, in some ways I think top 4 would be too much too soon and it would be all downhill from there and finishing 10th the next season would all of a sudden be a disappointment. Whereas 6th/a cup win would be a huge success, but one that we could handle and would give us something to build upon.

If Spurs hadn't got their shit together I think we might have been able to do it because of everyone else having a melt down. Reckon they will take it this year.

I think it would kill us this early. We would need to spend about 150m+ on pretty much a new starting 11 to not let a Europe competition screw us in the prem and in the CL. Can you imagine if we got injuries and had De Laet and Schlupp as full backs against Barcelona.

Don't know what you're talking about - Jeffs iron skull would wreck Messi and Suarez.

The worst thing we as a club could do would be to stop doing what we're good at. It's what always screws us over. Keep buying intelligently, keep playing positively and the rest will look after itself.

Maybe the Champions League version is a bit over the top... but the Europa League might not be and in my mind this could be more disruptive to the teams progression.

It might be better for us to miss out on Europe altogether this year - whilst still having a good season - if that makes any sense?
