Crazy Stat Time!

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere:

We have scored at least twice in six league games on the trot (Shakespeare's first six). This is the first time we have achieved this in the Premier League.

In fact, (as far as I can make out) it's the first time we've done this in the top flight since the Ice Kings had an incredible streak of 11 such games - in the winter of 1962/63! (We've had 30 seasons in the top flight since then).

Talk about taking the shackles off. Will Grigg eat yer heart out.

(Anyone wanna guess how many goals we scored in Ranieri's last six league games? - Yep, that's right.)

Plus - it's not just quantity - the goals we've been knocking in have been sensational. Anyone mind if I reel off a personal top 10?

1) Ndidi v Stoke - (including the sharp passing move that preceded it)

2) Fuchs v Hull - those 1-2s!

3) Mahrez v Hull (several defenders with twisted blood)

4) Vardy v Sunderland (genius Albrighton)

5) Drinkwater v Liverpool

6) Huth v West Ham

7) Mahrez v West Ham (not so much the 'shot', more the incredibly in-yer-face hassling that led up to it)

8) Vardy v Stoke (is Glen Johnson's head still spinning?)

9) Vardy v Liverpool (the second one - after the slick passing)

10) Albrighton v Everton (of course he meant it!)

(And that doesn't even include the Albrighton-Vardy link up v Liverpool that got this all started, or the Gray-Slimani counter at Goodison. And we also scored two against Sevilla in the middle of the run.)

Seriously, if someone could string those together in a neat video I'd have it on repeat for hours.

An erection or the video?:P

we love to succeed where other clubs can't...

Atletico have not conceded a single goal in their past eight home knockout ties.

The last visiting player to score at the Vicente Calderon in a tie in the last 16 or later was Kaka in AC Milan's 4-1 loss in March 2014, and Leicester's challenge is to succeed where Chelsea, Barcelona (twice), Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have all failed.

Athletico Madrid always cheat when playing Leicester.

We always get shite refs when playing A Madrid.

I was going to start a new thread called 'A Brief History of Blatant Injustice' about this, but you've given me a nice chance to put it in here.

The basic stat is this: In our three European games away to Atletico, FOUR penalties have been awarded against us. Let's have a look at all of them.

1) OK - we all know this one.

3_F31_BF1_B00000578-4406842-_Replays_sho

2) This is so painful to watch, even 20 years later:

3) Right - let's go back to 1961. Atletico were awarded two penalties in this game. Here's the first. It's a little difficult to see what the offence was. Banks saves the penalty, they score from the rebound, but it is disallowed for a foul on Banks. At least I think that's what happens. The goal certainly didn't stand. Can't really complain about that one, right?

But then they are awarded a second penalty, for what seems to be handball, though the defender appears to have his arm very close to his body.

There's a couple of other things I'd like to put here. If your name's Martin O'Neill, these are an essential part of the context. I don't know if Martin mentioned this during Wednesday's coverage, but I do know it still rankles with him . And it's obvious why. This is also from Atletico's Vicente Calderon stadium, during the 1982 World Cup. Northern Ireland are on the verge of an absolutely momentous achievement. If they beat France, they will reach the semi-finals. Early in the game they score this fantastic goal to take the lead. Or that's what they thought, but the linesman makes an absolutely horrendous error. If you pause the video in the right place you can see that he's at least two yards onside. France scored soon after and went on to win comfortably.

And then there's this. The Steve Guppy one above came just a few months after we were put out of another cup competition with an absolute travesty of a decision.

Just to update on @kushiro's amazing stat from the other week - the last time we were defeated after scoring the opening goal in the Premier League and Champions League was February 14th 2016 - the infamous defeat at Arsenal that arguably spurred us on to win the league.

Since then in the Premier League:

27.02.2016 PL Norwich City (H) 1 - 0
05.03.2016 PL Watford (A) 1 - 0
15.03.2016 PL Newcastle United (H) 1 - 0
19.03.2016 PL Crystal Palace (A) 1 - 0
03.04.2016 PL Southampton (H) 1 - 0
10.04.2016 PL Sunderland (A) 2 - 0
17.04.2016 PL West Ham United (H) 2 - 2
24.04.2016 PL Swansea City (H) 4 - 0
07.05.2016 PL Everton (H) 3 - 1
27.08.2016 PL Swansea City (H) 2 - 1
17.09.2016 PL Burnley (H) 3 - 0
22.10.2016 PL Crystal Palace (H) 3 - 1

04.04.2017 PL Sunderland (H) 2 - 0
15.04.2017 PL Crystal Palace (A) 2 - 2

18 Premier League victories. Only two draws - Today and a year ago this weekend.

Add to that the Champions League:

14.09.2016 CL Club Brugge (A) 3 - 0
27.09.2016 CL FC Porto (H) 1 - 0
18.10.2016 CL FC Copenhagen (H) 1 - 0
22.11.2016 CL Club Brugge (H) 2 - 1
14.03.2017 CL Sevilla (H) 2 - 0

23 wins. UnbeatableUnstoppable.

(25 if you include the FA Cup - not going to mention the League Cup for obvious reasons)

BTW - that's 58 goals scored, 17 goals conceded and 15 clean sheets.

With Spurs still being so sensitive about the way last season unfolded, it's nice to know that the Premier League is fully aware of the phenomenon known as the 'trauma trigger'. This refers to:

'an experience that causes someone to recall a previous traumatic memory, although the trigger itself need not be frightening or traumatic and can be indirectly or superficially reminiscent of an earlier traumatic incident'.

Spurs' title challenge last season finally came to end on two consecutive Mondays, when they threw away crucial points against West Brom and, of course, Chelsea. The Premier League have clearly decided that for the foreseeeable future it would be unwise to force Spurs to play football on Monday, as we can see from the following stats:

1) Spurs have not had to play ANY games on Monday this season.

2) With their game at Leicester on Thursday May 17th, Spurs will have played league games this season on every day of the week EXCEPT Monday.

3) Spurs are the ONLY team in the Premier League not to play on Monday this season.

It would be good if we could follow this example at the King Power stadium in May and not chant anything likely to trigger those same traumatic memories. I'm talking of course about chants like 'Did you cry at Stamford Bridge?', 'Who came third in a two-horse race?' and especially not this one:

Two points above the Championship relegation zone with three to play. That home record is disgusting (and was about to get worse as we lost 4-1 to Wolves in our last match).

but 8 years ago tomorrow we were beating Southend to win League One.

We've come so far in such a short space of time. Magical.

Love that site. Endless time spent pondering the trials and tribulations of each season.

How is it possible that in our relegation season we conceded just 2 goals more than when we won the title with 102 points? lol
