Spoilers Ahead - The Force Awakens

I think it is, both Anakin and Luke had similar tests, Anakin was looking at Mace Windu and the Emperor for ages thinking what do I do(actually thought that was a really good scene), that was the moment he became a Sith, he chose the way he did for Padme, therefore completely dismissing the Jedi code and becoming Darth Vader. Luke had to kill Vader to turn in to a Sith or choose not to to remain a Jedi, and he remained a Jedi therefore passing the ultimate test, exactly what Kylo Ren did by killing Han, all Jedi/Siths seem to become such due to one big test and that sets out the path for their entire lives. That's just the way Star Wars is, whether you like it or not is up to you.

Also, after having seen the film for a second time now (yes I am a Star Wars nerd and will likely go watch it again) I picked up on loads of stuff, the flashback scene you hear Yoda and Obi Wan (Alec Guinness says 'Rey' quite audibly, surprised I missed it first time round), you've got people complaining it was just a remake of A New Hope, by and large it was but then some people are saying 'Kylo Ren wasn't like Darth Vader wasn't bad ass enough', which is an obvious massive difference to a New Hope, obviously they can't make the film perfect for everybody or likely anybody. I thought as far as setting up what Star Wars is going to be like from here on out, not just the trilogy but everything moving forwards (I care about Fin, Rey, BB8 and Poe already, so in that regard for the trilogy I think they've set it up wonderfully, while still leaving a lot to be discovered), I think they did pretty much as good a job as they possibly could in 2 hours 10 minutes. I can see the angle people are coming from with some complaints they have, I just don't agree with most of them.

The scene where Rey says 'you're scared that you'll never be as powerful as Darth Vader', that tells you exactly why he wears the mask. Every time he took the mask off he looked/seemed conflicted, mask on he's pretty much just a badass. He takes the helmet off and Kills his Dad, therefore showing us and proving to Snoke that he has gone full on Dark Side, now Mask or no Mask he is destined for Darkness, at least in Episode 8. I thought they handled the mask on/off very well, personally, to fit in with the inner conflicts Kylo Ren was having. They made a big deal in all the other 6 films that Anakin Skywalker died when he became Darth Vader, in the scene when we see Han die it's not just him that dies, Ben dies with him and is now Kylo Ren, that was the test Snoke set him and he passed it and now will presumably go be trained by Snoke while Rey trains with Luke.

Yeah but you watch him change when his mum grounds him!

I am just assuming that it is deliberate that Kylo Ren comes across as a petulant emotional teen, he isn't the main bad guy and it is harking back to Anakin and him being unable to control his anger, hopefully we find out why, something happened with Luke at the training that sent him to the Dark side and made Luke realise he didn't know enough about the force to train such powerful beings. Maybe he found out he had a sister that had been kept hidden from him...

I'm pretty sure what you've described is exactly what's going to play a part in his character arc over the course of the trilogy.

I've read people's comments on this from previous pages and I think they have point - I still think he was too weak though. It's perfectly reasonable to have an unfinished villain to begin with but there were times when Kylo Ren felt like less than that.

Just seen it and read through this thread. I quite liked Kylo Ben and think you're going to struggle to match Darth Vader. You can see Ben is a conflicted character while in IV Vader had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I couldn't speak for 10 mins after leaving the cinema - is anyone else as wounded as me about losing a character that I grew up with in the originals?  I had his action figure, the millenium falcon etc.   I'm still devastated at what I saw!

Han was obviously going to be written out somehow, they couldn't take a risk that Harrison might not make it to the last film (not necessarily saying he'd die, but might be too old to pull it off).

Seen it twice now, liked it better second time round. Knowing character motivation, a lot of the earlier scenes made more sense... though I'm still not sure how the Resistance can be backed by the New Republic.

Anyone notice that Captain Phasma was Brienne of Tarth?

Was on the Alan Carr show talking about her part in it the other week. Could have been a man in a suit for all we saw of her, all we heard was her voice.

On the plus side with the First Order employing women and black people it's reassuring to see that they're an equal opportunity homicidal dictatorship.

They actually got Ewan McGrgor to do the voice over.

Daniel Craig was the stormtrooper who got jedi mind-tricked by Rey as well, apparently designated JB-007. Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich played another stormtrooper.

I have to believe Captain Phasma will be in ep. VIII. Otherwise it would have been a really pointless part to give a reasonably well known actress!

Watched Star Wars today, I liked the Ben character which seems to be the main talking point of this thread, I actually enjoyed his storyline of being torn between two sides, Vader was just plain bad until late on and Anakin switched from being a goodie to a baddie so it will be good to see the similar journey from an opposing viewpoint. I think perhaps some hardcore Star Wars fans allowed themselves to get sucked in by the trailer with Ben's alter ago as a kickass conquering all baddie that they ended up disappointed when he was exposed. I like Star Wars but i won't call myself a hardcore fan so I did not get too sucked in by the notion of Ben being the ultimate villain.

Thought he would have been better in a Harry Potter film.

Just  watched it. Could take it or leave it. Not much of a story. Similar to the first. Attacking a sort of death star. A  fight with swords.

Pilots flying spaceships like cars. Going through space at light speeds without space helmets.  All believable stuff if viewing it as fantasy fun.

When hey did the subtitle bit Spanish translation came up on mine. Luckily it was  not complicated and I know the odd  few words the basic stuff.
