Benguin Posted 2 January 2016 Posted 2 January 2016 I think 65 is a very realistic target and very achievable. That would probably be enough for Europa league as well!
foxes_rule1978 Posted 2 January 2016 Posted 2 January 2016 Under O'Neill which are considered some of the greatest years in the clubs history we had numerous bad spells, didn't win when expected etc... it is what happens, it isn't like we haven't had our chances in the last 3, just keep at it, rest a few for the cup and let's start to hit it again.
StanSP Posted 2 January 2016 Posted 2 January 2016 where would 79 points have got us in previous seasons: 2005/2006 - 4th 3rd - Liverpool. 82 points, +32 GD 4th - Arsenal - 67 points, +37 GD 2006/2007 - 3rd 2nd - Chelsea, 83 points, +40 GD 3rd - Liverpool, 68 points, +30 GD 2007/2008 - 4th 3rd - Arsenal, 83 points, +43 GD 4th - Liverpool, 76 points, +39 GD 2008/2009 - 4th 3rd - Chelsea, 83 points, +44 GD 4th - Arsenal, 72 points, +31 GD 2009/2010 - 3rd 2nd - Man Utd, 85 points, +58 GD 3rd - Arsenal, 75 points, +42 GD 2010/2011 - 2nd 1st - Man Utd, 80 points, +41 GD 2nd - Chelsea, 71 points, +36 points 2011/2012 - 3rd 2nd - Man Utd, 89 points, +56 GD 3rd - Arsenal, 70 points, +25 GD 2012/2013 - 2nd 1st - Man Utd, 89 points, +43 GD 2nd - Man City, 78 points, +38 GD 2013/2014 - 4th/5th 3rd - Chelsea, 82 points, +44 GD 4th - Arsenal, 79 points, +27 GD 2014/2015 - 2nd/3rd 1st - Chelsea, 87 points, +41 GD 2nd - Man City, 79 points, +45 GD Now, obviously this goes out the window given how wide open this season's league table is becoming. But it's clear Claudio wants Champions League football!
Vardinio'sCat Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 So, Claudio has set us a target of 40 more points. That's one way of putting the issue out of people's minds for a while, I guess. One way of looking at this is to take the first half results, as a guide to how we are doing. Of course, the away games in the first half become home games, and vice versa. In my thought experiment the home/away issue balances itself out(ish) over the 19 games. If we match Claudio's target (which is pretty bloody ambitious if you ask me) CL looks pretty certain. So lets see what this means for January using our comparison. First up is our Bournemouth result, which matches up with our draw at their place. It could have been a mighty +2 over par, as opposed to a big fat 0, which would have been a great start. Bear in mind that 19 'big fat zero's' will put us in the hat with Barca and Real, which I think we can all agree would be nice! So here we go for Jan 2/1 B'mouth (h) D/D - 0 (running total 0) 13/1 Spurs (a) D 16/1 Villa (a) W 23/1 Stoke (h) D We need 6 points this month to keep up with our schedule, so now we need another 5, which seems reasonably doable. Strikes me that some months will be a lot harder than this. I'll try and remember to bump this up after each game, unless it goes down like a pork pie at a Jewish wedding, in which case I might forget! I hope I've explained this well enough to be understood. I'm sure you lot will tell me if it isn't, and then I'll edit it so I don't look so dumb.
weller54 Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 Bournemouth 1pt Spurs 0 Villa 1 Stoke 1 3 total in January.
foxinsox Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 I am more optomistic about Jan. I think both Spurs games will be tough, but Villa are pants and we should be able to dance on their premiership grave. After last years games there are some grudges to settle. Stoke are patchy, but in our favour they have two league cup matches to contend with. They are safe in the league yet unlikely to reach Europe so the Cup is a decent chance of Wembley for them. Good luck to them I say! Arsenal are looking good, but Man City are also in the League cup with two extra games, as well as likely FA cup progressiom. Our ther rivals for European spots Everton and Liverpool also have two extra games to deal with. I am optomistic that our owners want to consolidate our place in the League and will spend as much as nessecary in this window, and that a short rest will do both Vardy and Mahrez a world of good. I think 40 more points is a tough call, but 30 is very possible and should put us into Europe.
Guest Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 We gave away 2 points yesterday, we should have beaten an 11 man Bournemouth at home let alone a 10 man. We need to recuperate those 2 points with a win at Spurs if we are to challenge for Europe. But at least we are safe from relegation.
BrummieFOX Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 Agree that another 40 points is very ambitious, especially given some of the teams we have to play away. However Claudio had to give them a challenging target and I'm glad he has.
sdb Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 Well we've some very winnable home games and then tough away games but ones which will suit out counter attacking style. Unlikely we'll replicate the first half of the season but it's a sensible target to set. Anything less would sound completely unambitious.
steflcfc Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 I think it will all depend on who we sign in Jan. Keep sticking with the same 11 and burnout won't be far away. As it shows if Vardy and Mahrez don't play....we struggle. Hopefully a rest for the cup will help them massively. Another striker, attacking centre mid who scores and a winger are required. Sign these will be pushin top 4 Failure to do so I feel Euro league, which is still amazing As mid table finish was my aim, but with the position we are in, we need to take this chance for CL qualification As next season Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool will be back challenging near the top. Us, Palace and Watford are having great seasons, time to capitilalise, repeating this next season....who knows
nnfox Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 We won't get another 40 points this season. No way. Our home games are all winnable = 27pts. Sunderland away, Villa away should give us 6 points, that's 33. If we can salvage some points from the other away games then Eurpoa League should be a certainty with an outside chance of Champions League. I suspect though that we won't win all our home games leaving us trying to pick up more difficult points on the road. 1st half of the season has been beyond my wildest dreams. I feel that the second half will be more problematic and nerve wracking when it comes to European qualification but hey, look at where we are now compared to where we were last year. I would say that these are some of those good problems to have!
David Hankey Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 I sincerely hope that now Ranieri has achieved his first target, reaching 40 points, that he and the squad can concentrate on what we should be targeting a top 4 place.
Len Finsbury Posted 3 January 2016 Posted 3 January 2016 I'm really surprised by this new points target. All season he's been cautious to play down the club's target for the season by insisting on the 40 points, then when we reach it, he goes mental! I'd have thought being conservative would have taken the pressure off the players but instead he's only increased it. I can only assume that this total has been decided upon based on the realistic ambitions of the players themselves.

ImBlue Posted 4 January 2016 Posted 4 January 2016 Bournemouth 1pt Spurs 0 Villa 1 Stoke 1 3 total in January. Pessimism is one thing, but villa have 7 points all season and have just been turned over by Sunderland, what gives you the impression they will get a point from us?
bobtickle Posted 4 January 2016 Posted 4 January 2016 Yeah he did say in an interview that when it came to discussing the new target he would first ask what the players thought and then he would give them his opinion. So they are both confident or maybe ranieri slightly more. Either way the confidence is there, the bar is set high but it would be silly not to have lofty ambitions considering the opportunity we have to do something really special.
weller54 Posted 4 January 2016 Posted 4 January 2016 Pessimism is one thing, but villa have 7 points all season and have just been turned over by Sunderland, what gives you the impression they will get a point from us? Took a point off Manchester city! Hope we can beat them.. But still thinking another 0-0.
ajthefox Posted 4 January 2016 Posted 4 January 2016 1 point from all of our remaining games would put us on 58 and that's essentially relegation form, so 60 or less would be a second half of the season meltdown. 80s a bit ambitious, but why not?
Foxstone Posted 4 January 2016 Posted 4 January 2016 Hoping we can hang on in there for 4th, Spurs must be our biggest rivals for that spot so 3pts at WHL would be immense
enmac Posted 5 January 2016 Posted 5 January 2016 The big problem about setting targets is that at the start of the season every team thought we were an easy touch. Not now. Today most teams will set out to defend- to get 1 point Our counter attack style won't work well against a team sitting back. Plan B? No idea what that could be. Maybe sign Ozil, Cazorla, Wilshere? ....
trabuch Posted 5 January 2016 Posted 5 January 2016 Ranieri just flips it on its head. Because he knows the next game is the most important. And let everyone else worry about the rest.
foxfanazer Posted 5 January 2016 Posted 5 January 2016 Every game this season should be a bonus now so I keep telling myself to have no expectations and just to enjoy it but when Saturdays come around I'm nervous and praying for a win. Despite us not hitting the net in 3 games we're still in a Champions league spot in April! Wherever we finish we've proven that a good mix of team spirit, desire and flashes of quality can get you amazing rewards. Even if we finish outside the top 6 we've set ourselves up and hopefully established ourselves as premier league mainstays
deep blue Posted 5 January 2016 Posted 5 January 2016 1 point from all of our remaining games would put us on 58 and that's essentially relegation form, so 60 or less would be a second half of the season meltdown. 80s a bit ambitious, but why not? 2nd half of season form often carries over to the start of the next season, so we definitely don't want to relax and finish in relegation form. On the contrary, we want to push on and have a rip-roaring conclusion to the season. That way puts us in with a chance of Europe, and even the title. Why wouldn't you want to seize the opportunity we have now. What's more, finishing the season on a high will put us in a better position with summer transfer targets and will give us a better launching pad for the start of next season (when we would hope to push on from our success).
ramaiya2 Posted 5 January 2016 Posted 5 January 2016 Look We are not technically safe yet. We are still in a relagation battle, :xmaslaugh: In the 1996/1997 season Sunderland were relagated with 40 points In the 1997/1998 season Bolton were relagated with 40 points and went down on Goal Difference In the 2002/2003 season West Ham were relagated with 42 points I know that it is unlikely that teams in the bottom can pull off what Leicester did last season with that escape but Newcastle, Sunderland (Aston Villa are doomed), Bournmouth and Norwich and put a run of games and put points on the table. Our mentality so far this season has been to just get to 40 points and it has so far worked so lets carry on with that and tell the team that we need 80 to 85 points to make sure (100%) that we stay in this league.
Nod.E Posted 7 March 2016 Posted 7 March 2016 We'll be lucky to get to 60. £50 Very tempting, but I don't want to think we won't show some ambition and bring in some quality over the next few weeks whilst our stock is high, so I wouldnt want to stake that much just yet. Really wish you'd have put your money where your mouth was
