Defending corners

Don't know if this is significant enough for a new thread, but I quite liked our new tactic of defending corners today. Leaving three men up at all times. It occupied 4 or 5 defenders and we looked like sparking a break if we won the ball from the corner.

Good move from Ranieri I reckon. Hope we see it again.

If I remember rightly all those corners we had in succession in the lead up to our first goal came from one of their corners, if we hadn't had those three left up the pitch we wouldn't have been able to make it down the other end so quickly. Good to see, teams will probably plan for that now though. I like how we are varying our corners too lately, got in a few times with intelligent runs and passes.

I noticed a few new corner techniques when we had corners today. Defensively we've been looking solid for a while now, which is good.

Why haven't teams done that before though? The players we left out would be totally useless at defending corners anyway so I think it's something that we should definitely consider using often.

I've never understood it either.

Let's face it, if we leave just Mahrez and Vardy up, they'd need about 4 players back just to deal with them. Those 2 are never going to be great at defending corners anyway. Plus it mean the ball doesn't come straight back at us, and we offer more threat on the counter.

Plus leaving Mahrez and Vardy out means that if Huth/Wes/Fuchs gets a decent head on it we are as likely to pick it up and can counter instead of clearing it and they come straight back at us.

Just makes more sense

I assume it was to make the penalty area less congested, given that Stoke are a much taller side than us. Good tactics.

And once in the first half, I noted we had three men in the corner region for one of ours. That dragged four defenders out of the box, again, good tactics. Never understood why attacking sides don't always have a secondary player near the corner taker. makes the defending side send two out to cover which gives you a one man advantage in the box compared to just having one taker.

Yeah I like this as well like it's been mentioned they have to leave extra men back to deal with the threat of countering but also it sort of makes them have to put the ball in the box as if they go short they lose even more men out of the box but we have the extras to cover that

Leaving 3 little uns up front and dragging 4 big uns to mark them ...    masterstroke.

One of several new 'tricks' on show today .......    I love it !

I loved it, brilliant idea.  to be honest we have been really shaky on defending corners and free kicks all season, and today we looked much more solid and I like the new tactic.

It was a risk but a fantastic one tactically. One of our main strengths has been our ability to break quickly and effectively and our opponents are finding ways of minimising that threat. To have 2 or 3 up at set pieces is such a bold move. If it eventually gets us a CL place then it is genius!

Keep seeing this said but I must be missing something Why is it a risk? The numbers are in our favour

And so is the pace of the players we leave on the half way line. The chances are that if the ball breaks one of our 3 will be first to it as happened today.

Pulling everyone back for corners has become a tactic of the modern game that every team adopts and I've never understood the logic behind it.
