davieG Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 Leicester in public vote with chance of being chosen for special Monopoly board VIEW GALLERY Comments (0)The city of Leicester has been shortlisted for the honour of having its own Monopoly board. Makers of a special version of the ever-popular board game have selected Leicester to go head-to-head in a public vote with Derby, Grantham and Newark to be chosen for a new East Midlands board. The manufacturers said the place that emerges with the most "pride" will get their own board with 22 customised property sites swapping places with the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the original. "Each are very strong contenders," said Ben Thompson, custom games development executive at Winning Moves UK, who are making this official version of Monopoly under license from owners Hasbro. "We originally began with a list of 12 but have shortlisted these 'Fab Four'. "The factors that will decide are two-fold. "Firstly the strength of popular feeling and pride for a particular place. "Secondly, the diversity and beauty of potential landmarks to fill the board. "So it's in effect a beauty contest – to borrow a celebrated Monopoly phrase – with the only difference being there is no prize for coming second, just first. "We want people to vote and to tell us why a place should win the honour of being chosen for this special board." The game will go into production to be ready for next Christmas and will hit shop shelves this October. Many of the playing cards will be heavily customised too. A limited-edition version of a Leicestershire version of Monopoly was launched in 2003. The top-rated property square was changed from the £400 Mayfair to the National Space Centre and its neighbour from Park Lane to Bradgate Park. The four railway stations on the original board were replaced by the Grand Union Canal, the Great Central Railway, Donington Park and Foxton Locks. Votes can be e-mailed to [email protected] or by traditional post to MONOPOLY EAST MIDLANDS, Winning Moves UK, 7 Praed Street, London W2 1NP. Polls close at midnight on February 20. Fox92 Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 What do Newark or Grantham boast apart from the latter is Thatcher's birthplace and, better, about 10 miles from where the Mallard broke the Steam record?
davieG Posted 26 January 2016 Author Posted 26 January 2016 there already is a leicester monopoly That's what it says in the article but it was a limited edition in 2003 I assume this will be more widely produced.

Captain... Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 That's what it says in the article but it was a limited edition in 2003 I assume this will be more widely produced. It says there was a limited edition Leicestershire monopoly board in the article, I think this one will be a city based board, at least that is how I read it.

Webbo Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 there already is a leicester monopoly I had it, used it once. Donated it to a charity shop just before Christmas.
davieG Posted 26 January 2016 Author Posted 26 January 2016 It says there was a limited edition Leicestershire monopoly board in the article, I think this one will be a city based board, at least that is how I read it. Aye.
Webbo Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 IIrc a lot of the properties were just adverts for local companies. I think one property was Leicester Sound, or whatever the local commercial radio station was called then.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 It'd be a bit boring to make a monopoly based on Leicester. Every tile would be taken up with a Subway and the occasional Maryland Chicken.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 It's terrible what some companies will do marketing wise to keep flogging a product that's really had its time. Rather than rehash the same game with many, many different versions, they'd be better of stopping production altogether and releasing a small quantity of the games every 10 years. They'd still have the brand awareness that could be attached to other things like the scratch cards, online games, McDonalds thingy.
Nalis Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 Has anyone ever completed a game of Monopoly before the boredom kicks in?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 Coalville Clock Tower has to be Old Kent Rd. Or maybe just the whole of Coalville?
Rincewind Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 Saw one in the Samaritans Charity shop a while back. It had gone the next day. Think there was about £8 on it. Not worth buying it with being on my own but it would make a good addition to the boardgaming club I attend.
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 January 2016 Posted 26 January 2016 I've already got the Leicester version?
