Donut Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Because you had three excellent cms and no recognisable left winger. You're sort of proving his point that england don't select formations to suit their players. What formation would you pick if you didnt have a single left sided option in the whole country?
Wymsey Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Which Spurs player isn't there on merit? Danny Rose seems mistake-prone and sometimes gets out of position.
theessexfox Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Danny Rose seems mistake-prone and sometimes gets out of position. I think he's a decent left-back and who else should be in the squad ahead of him?
Donut Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Danny Rose seems mistake-prone and sometimes gets out of position. Only realistic other option is Baines, and Everton have defended shambolically.
Wymsey Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 I think he's a decent left-back and who else should be in the squad ahead of him? Aaron Cresswell isn't bad.
m4DD0gg Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Genuinely more interested in wales and ireland this summer.
The Doctor Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 What formation would you pick if you didnt have a single left sided option in the whole country? One of the many without wingers: a 4-4-2 diamond, 4-3-1-2, the 5-3-2 we employed at the end of last season.
bluesbrothers Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Remember the days when all England did was play 4-4-2? Now seem a like 4-2-3-1 is the holy grail for Hodgson and England. Why not find a formation and tactic that suits the players you've got, rather than the other around? The irony is that the current crop of England players would be way better as a 4-4-2. Kane and Vardy need to play together as a front two, if only so we can put to bed questions over whether they would work as a little-and-large strike partnership. If you must accomodate Sterling (don't rate him, but at least he has pace) stick him on one wing and Lallana on another. Then it's a debate for the two central mids, with Alli, Dier and Drinkwater all deserving of a place. Henderson should not be in the side and is there on no merit of his own, so watch him go and twat a 30-yarder tonight to prove us wrong for five minutes. My England XI on current form - Centre Back is the hardest choice, with slim pickings in my eyes. If only Morgan hadn't declared for Jamaica - he'd be first on the teamsheet! : Hart Walker / Simpson (Any two of Shawcross, Jagielka, Cook (Bournemouth) Smalling or Cahill) Rose/Bertrand Dier Drinkwater Milner Alli Vardy Kane The only issue with that lineup is the lack of width, but I personally believe our main wide options in Lallana and, in particular, Sterling are horseshit and contribute very little. Those full backs give us enough pace to launch a wing attack - we could even play a 3-5-2 with them as wing backs and Dier sitting back to cover their forward runs.
The Doctor Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Small ing picks himself for centre back, but the other options are all a bit naff. You know it'll be stones though and he'll do his standard sol bamba impression and cost you a sloppy goal vs Russia as you bomb out in the groups.
Tuna Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 This is what's wrong with England rose plays almost as a winger but isn't a brilliant defender. Cresswell would be a better option or even charlie daniels!!!
car1os Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 The problem with the England team is that we have too many "stars" who have to be shoe-horned into a side and have been hyped up to be the next big thing, or "undroppable". We need to change our mentality - we do have players for every position but we would need to make the team a priority and pick the best players for the position as opposed to putting square pegs in round holes because the player is a big name. This is why we will never have the same success as a team such as Germany.
Dan Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Get Brendan Rodgers in I'd take him over Hodgson without a shadow of a doubt.
4everfox Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Butland Clyne Stones Smalling Cresswell Dier Drinkwater Alli Barkley Vardy Kane There you have it, England's best team when selecting players on merit.
Donut Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Butland Clyne Stones Smalling Cresswell Dier Drinkwater Alli Barkley Vardy Kane There you have it, England's best team when selecting players on merit. Awful formation though.
4everfox Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Awful formation though. Its better then 4-2-3-1 for the players that we have.
billyn88 Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Not been mentioned much alongside Noble's continued shunning but how has cresswell not earnt a cap in such a bang average team with such little competition in his position? The most consistent English left back of a high standard since Ashley Cole in my opinion.
Buzzell Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Awful formation though. 4-3-1-2 Butland Clyne Stones Smalling Cresswell Alli Dier Drinkwater Barkley Vardy Kane
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 I'd be more than happy to not see much of Drinkwater and Vardy in these friendlies For two reasons, I've stopped giving two hoots about the national team years ago really..and even more so under Hodgson. And secondly I'd rather keep them injury free.
Donut Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 4-3-1-2 Butland Clyne Stones Smalling Cresswell Alli Dier Drinkwater Barkley Vardy Kane I actually think though, that formation under uses Welbeck who is a consistent England performer to be fair to him. The other problem is, compared to the best teams in the world, those players, in whatever formation, are quite simply, gash.
Donut Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 I'd take him over Hodgson without a shadow of a doubt. Definitely not for me. Plays the same style of football we are trying to get away from. Cant give a straight answer to a straight question, and had no ideas at all after losing suarez and sturridge how to get Liverpool performing decently.
Sharpe's Fox Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Definitely not for me. Plays the same style of football we are trying to get away from. Yeah it's a disgrace your team isn't playing as well when you've lost your two best players and you're not allowed to get any of your own targets in. Bloke should be shot imo
Foxxed Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Christ, the amount of whinging in this thread. Spurs players got picked before Leicester players by a manager we're luck warm about. Boo hoo. We're five points ahead in the league. The injustices we have to suffer!
Donut Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Yeah it's a disgrace your team isn't playing as well when you've lost your two best players and you're not allowed to get any of your own targets in. Bloke should be shot imo Ha. Oh please.
AKCJ Posted 26 March 2016 Posted 26 March 2016 Honestly though, just picking Drinkwater and Vardy wont suddenly make England world beaters. We dont produce top talent often enough. We dont produce players with the skills that make them world class. There is disconnect between the Premier League and the national team, the clubs aims not aligning with those of the national team. Our development of youth falls behind other countries. The inclusion or non inclusion of Drinkwater and Vardy is almost irrelevant. Dan's point is that we're seemingly content to pick the same players regardless of performance. There is no opportunity to show your worth. I'd say that Drinkwater and Vardy have been in the top 5 performing Englishmen all season, why are they not rewarded for that? There is no imagination, we'll pick the same players regardless of their performances and nobody wants to be brave and say "You know what Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck... Your performances at club level haven't been good enough to warrant a starting spot in my team. When you're proving that you're good enough for your club then you will get into the side". Unfortunately (for the sake of English football)... the F.A. will always appoint a yes man... one who will put on a England tracksuit and sit on the touchline having absolutely no impact on what is going on... a puppet. Dan used the correct word, the way that our national football side is run is an absolute disgrace.
