Andrea Bocelli to perform at the KP on Saturday

Recommended Posts

Even though he has a girls name I think he should apply to go on Britain's Got Talent

I've seen worse singers do well on there!

Pretty sure a bloke who's sold 80 million-odd albums worldwide doesn't need to do that.

'Time To Say Goodbye' has a bit of history at football games. At Lothar Matthaus' last game for Bayern in 2000, Bocelli and Brightman's version was played as he made his farewells after the game. It generated a sublime atmosphere unlike anything I'd ever seen at an English ground (until Saturday). So moving.

It's in this video at about the nine minute mark:

Seems like it became a bit of a tradition. Here's Oliver Kahn's farewell.

Apparently the original usage was for German boxer Henry Maske.

The only football connection mentioned on the song's wikipedia page is when it was played after Eusebio's funeral to accompany his coffin being driven around the Stadium of Light. I imagine there must have been a lot of other examples.

Wtf.

Firstly it's not a girls name; we're not from Italy ... "Andrea" in Italian is the equivalent of "Andrew" over here.

And a world famous singer with millions of record sales doesn't need to apply for any talent contest.

Time to say goodbye should be played before every home game now. (Imo)

It's an amazing song and means something to us, an extremely prominent piece of our history.

You never know, in time we might be able to learn and sing the chorus! That would be something.

We should learn it and sing it has fans, belt it out as an anthem before and during matches, maybe a song that all four sides would join in with. Would sound immense.

Also it was great to hear and see him sing, much like our team this season, with a beaming smile on his face.

Still wondering why Bocelli did that for Leicester....I bet he hasn't "watched" a single LCFC game

Being blind does not make one unable to interact with society, to sit in chair in the corner, left out whilst everybody else participates in the highs and lows.

I am a big fan and I have followed his career for 20 years.  I have travelled to Italy and other parts of europe to see him sing.  I have been to numerous concerts and appearances and he has never failed to bring me to tears with the beauty of his voice.  I don't know how he does it, but he does.  There is something special about him that supposed more technical tenors just don't have.  I have seen supposed better singers but they have never had the same effect on me.  When I saw in the papers he was going to sing I thought he will flood the pitch !

Like most Italians, Bocelli is football crazy and a huge sports fan.  Football is like religion in Italy, and gets huge media coverage.  What other country has a daily newspaper devoted to football  ?  Ranieri's story has been getting huge coverage in Italy, and naturally Bocelli just got caught up in the excitement in Italy about Ranieri's success.  Just like in the UK when Gazza went to Italy, or Beckham went to the US, the British media reported on their career in Italy, in Italy they will report on prominent Italians abroad.  As well as TV and radio, he would read plenty as blind people have special keypads that convert internet text into braile.  When Italians socialise, all the talk would be of football, and he would hardly want to be left out.  He is a big fan of boxing and F1 as well.

Bocelli is an active person who likes to be part of the gang.  The legend is that he was blinded by a football.  It was no ordinary football.  He was actually partially sighted, practically blind anyway, and attending a special school for blind children and they play sports where sound is very important.  The football they were playing with had metal studs on it so that the blind kids could hear where the ball was.  So he got hit with this heavy metallic football.  Didn't stop him getting stuck in, and his big sporting participation is riding horses.  He has always owned at least one horse to ride, and often comments about the challenge of a taking on a fiesty horse.  These days he has a stable of them.  If you check out the Italian or European newspapers he is regularly photographed on holiday doing something like riding a bicycle, snow skiing or water skiing or skippering a boat.  He is even on record as saying he prefers water skiing as there are less obstacles to avoid.

Regarding "watching" a game, for decade, people listened to radio coverage of football, which is where the phrase "back to square one" come from.  He likes nothing more than being part of a group of Italians sitting around a TV shouting and gesticulating.  His friends commentate for him.  I have read interviews where something has been cut short or postponed because of the " big game ".

He is a regular face in Italian football and has sung at lots of football ceremonies.  Check out YouTube for a video of him at the 2009 Champions League Final between Manchester United and Barca, where he sang the Champions League Theme and the Gladiator theme song.  To be honest, its even more awesome than Saturday if you are emotionally impartial to the context.  He gave a concert before the final of Euro 2000 in Rotterdam and World Cups, including Germany and South Africa and has regularly been pictured with the Italian team at tournaments all around the world, private visit at their training camps.  The Italian media have printed loads of photos.  Similarly when he has performed at the Olympics he has been photographed making a goodwill visit to the Italian athletes to wish them luck.

Earlier this year he took part in Beckhams Unicef fundraiser.  Next week he is giving a charity concert in Milan that he is hosting jointly with Javier Zanetti for their respective charities.   Jose Mourhino is doing something during the concert, as are figures like Marcello Lippi, Arrigo Sacchi, Clarence Seedorf, Leonardo, Paolo Maldini and Samuel Eto'o.

So, he was probably caught up in the romance of Ranieri's Leicester, with all the coverage in the Italian media and the talk with his friends, and called him up, because when you are famous, that is the sort of thing you do.  If Ranieri went to see him at Wembley I hardly doubt that he queued up for a ticket or kept hitting redial on a phone.  He'd be a VIP.  Didn't Ferguson take the entire Man U squad to see Bocellli in Manchester.  Pavarotti was a Juventus supporter.  In his imperial years he would phone the managers to "advise them", tell them what players to play etcetera.

My guess is this.  He phones Ranieri.  Ranieri tells the club.  He is a BIG deal in Italy, when The Queen or Putin or Obama come to town, the government get him to sing.  Whenever something important happens at the Vatican, he sings.  Bocelli sang at Pavarotti's wedding and again some years later at his funeral. People ask him to sing because there is some special significance to them, and he does it.   He has sung for the queen in private in London.  But then he has popped up at his local church completely unannounced at an ordinary wedding, or attending mass somewhere in the US and is recognised and asked to sing and he does it.  He is an ordinary guy with a sense of humour and feeling like everybody else.  Just because he is blind does not mean he can't understand what things mean to people.  But he literally lives for music.

As a longtime fan, it was clearly from the heart, as on previous occasions, it has always been " from my new album", whereas here he was in jeans, laughing with Ranieri and just bashed out Nessun Dorma and a 20 year old hit.  If he had been being mercenary about it, it would have been, here is a song from my lastest album in all good shops now.  He knows Nessum Dorma is "the football song" in England.  It probably just so happened that the timing was right and it was a really fun thing to do.  He looked like he was enjoying it, as he is known for being very uptight in concert.  The last few weeks he has been giving concerts in the Far East, India, Arabia, and this week he is in the UK anyway performing in Windsor, so it just so happened that fortune set the date in a fairytale that is writing itself.

It was a wonderful moment.

I'm not a Leicester fan, but this whole fairytale has touched my heart, especially for Ranieri.  Nice guys do win.  Ambramovich better give him a good reception on Saturday.  And the rest of the players.  Sometimes things happen in life to give us a sign, and I think this is one of those moments.  Every week I have been willing them on and checking all the other results.

So happy for all of you !

While I was looking for this I found he had performed at the World Cup in South Korea, as well as Germany and South Africa. He gets about ...

The song performed at ucl ceremony is this. But the lyrics are a bit different cuz that one was specifically dedicated to Roma, the town and the goddess having the same name

Bocelli's Now we are free

It was fabulous. Literally one of the best things I've ever seen. It was a bit of a false start because of the sound system it was hard to hear that he had started singing, but once everyone realised, it settled down.
