I don't know if you can kick Russia out of the European Championships during the tournament. And I don't see why that would help. The team has earned the right to participate by their own means and they cannot be held responsible for the actions of their followers. It'd set a terrible precedent that could cause further tension.

I agree it would cause tension, financial fines just never hit home so I think there needs to be another option. There could be the route of having Russia play the rest of the tournament behind closed doors - but once again - imagine all those Russians being sent home now, more tension and probably more violence at not being allowed in. It's very tough to know what is the right answer - but it needs to be severe enough so that it doesn't happen again (at least on this scale - the world's never going to be perfect). How do you stop radical Russians from doing this at every tournament? We sadly live in a world were the actions of the few affect the lives of the majority, signs of this everywhere - how do you change a mindset unless you stand up to it? It sucks for the team if they get expelled - but a message needs to be sent.

They sent a strong message - football NEEDS to send a strong message back.

I can see teams boycotting the world cup due to safety concerns after this. Just imagine how much worse it's going to be in their own country.

I have been to every World Cup ireland qualified for (I know not many)

But I won't be going to this !!!!!

And the massive question today is , with all the security how did they get a flare gun/canister into the stadium ?

Meant to be kicking off in Turkey/Croatia match.

Great advert for Europe every one hates each other.

That's because the French are ignorant and arrogant.

To say Russia should not be punished because of their fans is unfair. English club teams were banned from Europe for what 5 years due to the behaviour of the fans.

Difference is, English clubs were banned before the respective competitions started.

Yugoslavia were expelled from EURO '92 before the tournament began in Sweden, allowing Denmark to enter at very short notice.

Let's go back one step and let's make a critical distinction.

The major part of the problem/question is: How do you stop mindless thugs and brainless football fans from having a go at each other during European or World tournaments?

Nationalism is rife in Europe also, and the EURO is just a platform for all sorts of obtuse (right-wing, nationalist) elements to make their voice heard by the usage of violence. The logical continuation of happenings on the political stage, if you will.

Can you imagine what 2018 will be like?

The Russian fans are utter savages, how in this year can you be firing flares into opposition supporters from 80 yards away?

True, perhaps the simple answer is this is the first tournament where certain fans havent been banned from travelling? Could be option 1. I seem to remember in previous tournaments always seeing items on the news about passports being seized to stop known offenders from travelling. So, with that in mind could that also mean (option 2) that these fans haven't had previous? in which case there is proof of the mentality problem i have afformentioned. That to me would show that despite banning individuals before that nation is still responsible for not creating the right mentality in it's society. Has England's problem got better or worse since the 70's? Why? Because the British government wouldn't stand for it in the future and put their foot down. I don't see Putin going down that route - and i'd argue that monkey chants still existing in Russia today shows NOTHING has changed - despite everything handed out, fines, stadium blackouts - whatever. It's got to the point where they have to understand if they don't make ammends they won't have anything to do with world football anymore. How else will they learn?

A mate of mine went to Russia as part of his travels and he went to a Spartak and CSKA Moscow derby whilst there (life experiences and all that). He said it was one of the worst decisions of his life. He said the authorities just let the firms kick **** out of each other and only get involved if it looks like its gonna spill over into something more than that.

So the hooligans of all these nations, show they have no human understanding, outside their own

miserable world.

France under security pressure from terrorists, all rescources concentrated, more on

protecting theirs and yes european football visitors lives, dont need these scum to add and

compound that so sensitive situation.

Its a shame the Police before the competition wasnt given the freedom of organising their

own set ups and responses.Be sure for the euros their involvment and expected responses

have been politically curtailed.Even the ground checks, were sold to outside civil securities,

with Police told to play and show presence but low key support.

The police wanted to use special arrest cages, with day judges and instant deportation.

They wanted the power of mass arrests, from undercover police, who could differentiate

between just over drunk non violent fans (night in the cells) and the real aggitators including

ones who hang around with malice. If caught loss of confication of passport/id handing to

consulates and immediate deportatation.

Some of the French official policing and security organisation, wanted UK police and other nations

with active involvement support, other quarters from within argued against. So they only receive

a presence, and no direct suggestions.

That these scum of violence, will get off lightly is wrong, for me well before the tournament

beginning, should of had a warning and all been informed, that they also if arrested and

found guilty will be charged under the terrorist act.....Lives because of civil tension

are more in danger.....We are too bloody soft.We still have too many people in authority

in UK and through Europe who dont understand the societies they have been asked to

manage, the are totally unknowledgable of their peoples scum side..

Proof...how the hell is it possible to get flares and roman candles into the ground.

FFS they could of been explosives for a suicide bomber...

Question is..incompetence, corruption, or inexperienced youths acting has security

personelle, to save money????.

Few observations from the past few days out here in Marseille.

- Not all bars given out plastic cups for pints(everyone hates drinking out of a plastic cup but still)

- bottles not being poured into cups when bought

- few stewards smoking and being on their phones during the game.

This is France after all. You should have seen it when they first put up speed cameras round the villages, all the locals went out , dug them up and chucked them in ditches.

That's a relativly firm but fair response from the guys in charge. One strike down. Let's hope everyone else notices that - although I got a horrible feeling this whole tournament could end up being cancelled if we see more stuff go down. Nice on a positive note though to see some Polish and N Ireland fans having a laugh together earlier
