Rincewind Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Don't know what direction they will move in. They have moved so far right that they have hit a brick wall and even Ed Miliband was called Ed the Red. Its no wonder that some left of centre are regarded as looneys.

The Guvnor Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I have decided to support Mrs May for my Party leadership and therefore, our next Prime Minister. I believe she has experience of dealing with complex matters which we need during the Brexit negotiation process. Whilst Mrs Leadsom may have banking expertise to her name, it is a very different proposition dealing with 27 EU states. I already envisage Mrs May walking into that room (firmly) to fight our corner but in a considered and fair way. Whoever wins, I shall of course support, but I think the Conservative Party needs a new direction now and I look forward to helping create that. Interested to hear what other members of the party feel, is there overwhelming support for Theresa? how do you judge it?
Rincewind Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 325 Tory MP's fail to turn up in a vote on EU nationals. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-news-eu-nationals-right-to-remain-status-deportation-boris-johnson-labour-motion-guarantee-a7124341.html

This should be an up front agreement with the EU that Europeans over here and Brits over there will not be deported and it could be unwise (although a support the sentiment) to guarantee the rights of EU nationals here without the EU doing the same for Brits over there.

You would certainly hope that both sides will be 'grown up' in these delicate and important issues however any 'divorce' can turn acrimonious very quickly so you can only second- guess how negotiations will proceed. It just worries me slightly with Theresa her opening gambit maybe 'you play ball with me and I will play ball with you, just don't forget it's my ball.
Thracian Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Interested to hear what other members of the party feel, is there overwhelming support for Theresa? how do you judge it? I get the impression there's a lot of grass roots support for Leadsom which is why they started the backstabbing campaign against her in an effort to get Gove into second place.

Yes Thrac agree entirely, the middle England vote is the vote the May supporters are worried about. I think May will win now if only for her experience but was interested to hear from a member what the feeling on the ground is so to speak , oh and whether I should cash out my bet on Andrea
Guest MattP Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Don't know what direction they will move in. They have moved so far right that they have hit a brick wall and even Ed Miliband was called Ed the Red. Its no wonder that some left of centre are regarded as looneys. The party that moved so far right it took in refugees, was the biggest donator of foreign aid in Europe and legalised gay marriage It depends if the EU try to use British Nationals living in the EU as a bargaining chip. I agree, but we know how nasty politics is, negotiating position is very important and both sides don't want to be seen to give anything up. We all know no country in this day and age is going to enforce deportations of people who legally arrived in the country though.
Guest MattP Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Serious note though the reason the Conservatives have had two female leaders before Labour have one precisely because they don't over-think the identity politics.
Brizzle Fox Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 I wouldn't be surprised if the grass roots end up coming out strongly for Leadsom which could leave us with both leaders of the main parties having negligible front line ministerial experience Lots of stories coming out already about some of her more outlandish claims about her experience in investment banking and her deficiencies in her single junior ministerial role. Starting to sound like another Walter mitty type character in the IDS, Archer mode.
Webbo Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Serious note though the reason the Conservatives have had two female leaders before Labour have one precisely because they don't over-think the identity politics. Basically ,right of centre believe in the individual, left of centre believe in the collective. What sub section of society you're from isn't so important for tories.
purpleronnie Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Serious note though the reason the Conservatives have had two female leaders before Labour have one precisely because they don't over-think the identity politics. Matt you can't seriously believe those 2 women MP's are the best candidates, a load of tories turning on each other and suddenly through coincidence more than anything 2 women are left.
Guest MattP Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Matt you can't seriously believe those 2 women MP's are the best candidates, a load of tories turning on each other and suddenly through coincidence more than anything 2 women are left. Out of the candidates for the job I think they may well be, Theresa May certainly is. Who would your final two have been from the candidates who put themselves forward?
Strokes Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Matt you can't seriously believe those 2 women MP's are the best candidates, a load of tories turning on each other and suddenly through coincidence more than anything 2 women are left.Of course they are, by quite a margin too.
Thracian Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Matt you can't seriously believe those 2 women MP's are the best candidates, a load of tories turning on each other and suddenly through coincidence more than anything 2 women are left. When i reflect on some of the piss-poor Party leaders and even Prime Ministers who've been in office over the years I really can't imagine either May or Leadsom having anything to worry about. And at least there'll have some solid experience to tap into if they need it. We've not done badly for women leaders over the years, whether they be Queens or politicians.
Rincewind Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Isn't that Leadman woman in favour of fox hunting and against gay marriage? I think she has her 21st priorities mixed up. Is this the forward thinking progressiveness we can expect from Tory governments from now on? Just shows what a farce politics in this country is.

She never said she was against gay marriage, more that she thought civil partnerships should be open to all.
Mark_w Posted 8 July 2016 Posted 8 July 2016 Don't think I've wanted the competent option to win a Conservative leadership election before.
Rincewind Posted 9 July 2016 Posted 9 July 2016 She never said she was against gay marriage, more that she thought civil partnerships should be open to all. Thought they were as in register office weddings. My sister was married in a hotel no religion ceremony involved. Anyway she not very modern thinking. Anything to do with gay reform and rights she voted against. Don't think I've wanted the competent option to win a Conservative leadership election befo did not mean to quote this.
Guest MattP Posted 9 July 2016 Posted 9 July 2016 Ken, Leadsom abstained from the gay marriage vote, please get your facts right. We've had more than enough lies and smear in the EU ref to last a lifetime.
Lionator Posted 9 July 2016 Posted 9 July 2016 So now Leadsom says she has an advantage over May because she has children. Then lies by saying that that's not what she said, the audio file of her interview seems to prove otherwise. A nasty woman.

Guest MattP Posted 9 July 2016 Posted 9 July 2016 Career politician? She entered the house at the age of 48 It's great you've all found your new "Tory bogeywoman" but at try to keep the abuse and slander slightly realistic.
