2018 Russia World Cup Qualifying

The most mental five minutes of football I've seen for a while.

Colombia concede 2 in the last minute to go from certs to qualify to outsiders.

Argentina will have to win in Ecuador, they have got away with murder after failing to win again.

I tweeted about there being one goal in about 400 minutes of football between the five games. Within ten minutes there had been seven.

I just watched that. Argentina have no imagination about them whatsoever. Absolutely baffling that they play that bloke from Boca over the likes of Dybala.

Peru in with a very good chance of qualifying here.

There own fault, for not getting Ulloa to support Messi...

Arguably Spurs' best player, our most similar no. 10 is probably Lallana but Eriksen is streets ahead still.

I wouldn't be surprised if links to Barcelona or other top clubs were to intensify if he keeps this form up for the rest of the season.

Yesterday he probably ran more than any other player on the pitch and is a great team player.

His recent free role in the NT has enabled him to score 7 goals in his last 9 games. Compare that to 10 goals in his previous 63 caps!

How the hell did Colombia manage to concede 2 in the last 2 minutes at home to Paraguay?!?

That's a real cliff-edge drama for the last day. As I understand it Brazil have qualified, as have Uruguay barring cricket scores. Ecuador, Bolivia & Venezuela all out.

That leaves 5 nations fighting for 2 more automatic qualification spots plus a play-off spot:

Chile             26pts    GD +2

Colombia      26pts    GD +2

Peru              25pts    GD +1

Argentina      25pts    GD +1

Paraguay      24pts    GD -5

Final matches: Brazil v. Chile, Peru v. Colombia, Ecuador v. Argentina, Paraguay v. Venezuela

So, Paraguay's chances of qualifying suddenly look good. You'd have to assume that they'll beat Venezuela, taking them to 27pts - and above either Peru or Colombia, who play one another.

Also, to finish above them, Argentina would have to win in Ecuador and Chile would have to draw in Brazil.

Basically, it looks as if, to stand a strong chance of making the finals, Chile will need a draw in Brazil, Colombia will need a draw in Peru and Argentina will need a win in Ecuador.

CONMEBOL qualifying is crazy. To think a team like Argentina might miss while the US is trying to flounder their way through qualifying.

That being said, massive game tonight between USA and Panama.

No game for the USA is ever easy lol

The last two games between the teams have ended in a 1-1 draw. Panama has only conceded 5 goals through 8 world cup qualifiers. Panama can lock up a spot in the world cup with an away win against the US. Even a draw would be a big result for Panama, as they're a point ahead of the US.

There's some history between the two teams. Panama has never competed in the world cup, and was eliminated in the last minute of the 2014 cycle by the US. Panama was up 2-1, at home, in the 90th minute. Holding onto that result would have put Panama in the last world cup spot (playoff vs New Zealand).  Mexico was on the outside looking in, needing a US result to go through. The US went on to tie it up in extra time, and then also get the game winner to send Mexico to the world cup (playoff vs NZ). The mexican announcers went crazy, you have to watch it:

For the US, this is as close to "must win" as it gets. A win puts the US in the last qualifying place, with 1 game to go. A loss or a draw and the US could be in 4th place (playoff vs Australia/Syria) or 5th place (out).

Pretty silly that 4th out of 6 can still be in the playoffs, where in Europe you have to come 2nd.  And then you look who comprises the 6 team group, Mexico, Costa Rica, panama, Honduras, Trinidad, USA lol

You're making hard work of it, but that's one easy qualification.

We'll this is the fifth round of qualifying (rather than the second for UEFA). So we've cut down the minnows. Only the CONCACAF titans like Trinidad remain lol

Now if you're complaining about the number of teams CONCACAF gets to bring to the world cup, I can't really argue that.

But i will say, of the 4 teams that CONCACAF brought to the World Cup:

Costa Rica, won your group (Uruguay, Italy, England), made it to the quarterfinals and lost on PKs against the Netherlands.

The US made it out of the group of death (Portugal, Ghana, Germany) and lost in the round of 16 in extra time (2-1) to Belgium.

Though Mexico tripped in, they still made it out of the group (Brazil, Croatia, Cameron) and lost in the round of 16 (2-1) to Netherlands.

Honduras played like garbage, but we don't talk about them.

But just wait until the tournament expands to 48! Then CONCACAF will be bringing 6!!!!! teams to the 2026 world cup. Footballing giants like Canada! Haiti! Jamaica! Curacao! etc. will all get chances to embarrass England on the world stage.

We saw Panama spank Martinique here back in July.  Granted, that's a minnow eating a dwarf brine shrimp.  But they play competent CONCACAF crapball, and are good enough to get a result against the US.
