2018 Russia World Cup Qualifying

Recommended Posts

Not sure what to make of Griezmann's hair today..

Hope Wales get the win in Moldova to really enhance their qualifying prospects.

Strachan would achieve something great if Scotland actually manage to win their remaining games.

Result of the tournament for Luxembourg, irrespective of how the game was! That's two wins and a draw in 4 internationals for them...must be a first !  Makes things interesting in that group !

Faroes too, get a second win in their group... Very few 'gimme' games anymore !

Absolutely right, what an achievement. I'm happy for these sides who have historically been punching bags. Maybe Luxembourg can do 'an Iceland' some time in the the not too distant future. No doubt the result will live long in their memories and be a platform for future campaigns.

Much better than the 'turkey shoots' we've been used to !

France will still come 'top 2', as Netherlands/ Sweden meet in their last game. Be interesting though if the French don't win in Sofia as you 'd expect the Swedes to leapfrog them, (so to speak), and take the group lead !

France will still finish top, I'm sure. Sweden are favourites for second. Despite their lack of big names or outstanding talent (bar Emil Forsberg) I am simply in shock at how poor the Dutch have become. It must've been a long time since they put out a side where their one and only striking option is a backup player from Spurs.

Impressive effort by Syria, given that their country is half-destroyed by war.

They're now on the verge of the Asian play-offs (or could even qualify directly), probably to play Saudi or Australia for the right to a final play-off against USA, Honduras or Panama.

Final matches tomorrow: Uzbekistan v S. Korea & Iran v Syria

- If Syria match the Uzbeks' result, they're in the play-off (and they have a 2-goal advantage on goal difference)

- If both Syria and Uzbekistan win, Syria qualify automatically, Uzbekistan are in the playoffs & the Koreans are out....and, not wanting to be cynical, but Iran & Syria are close allies, aren't they?

Syria seem to have played all their home matches in Malaysia.

There's also the very unlikely scenario that China will overturn the GD and pip both Syria and Uzbekistan to the play-off spot should both of them lose, which given their opponents could happen.

I am surprised at how poor China have been for years now, ever since they qualified for the 2002 tournament. I was expecting a rapid rise and it makes even less sense now that they have had so much money invested at club level for a good number of years. But they haven't qualified for a tournament since and look like they've bottled it again despite the opportunity never being bigger.

Norn Iron two nil up v Czech Rep and will be guaranteed 2nd as things stand. GAWA!

Norn Iron even worse / better than us for winning games with no possession. Must average about 20% per game.

Ugly as anything, very few completed passes and most chances / goals from set plays but then again crap players if we're being honest so how else are you supposed to win
