kingcarr21 Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 Lets see how he gets on. Not really bothered who the manager is. I'm surprised he got a 4 year contract though.

Fox92 Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 Proven he's good enough I guess. Not many other options though if we're going for an English manager.
lcfcrinaldi Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 Could be better, could be worse. Another uninspiring appointment really. Will end the same way that all England managers end... Sacked in a blaze of boring football and lots of losses and draws to middle of the road teams. All because we are too scared to change anything.

I'll put that down to Southgate, seeing as it's been such along time since we looked anything like that. Not that long since we beaten Germany 3-2 though. I'll put that down to Rooney's absence more considering England was not that great in Southgate's first three games.

The FA and the whole international set up are a joke. They are farcical IMO. I have nowt against Southgate. Good luck to him. The four year contract though....another example of ''who the fook is running the FA''?

Trying to put a positive spin on what has been a miserable 20 years since Euro 96........the last time we were genuinely competitive. I used to support England & it would be nice to get behind them again. I just find it very difficult to give a shit.
Izzy Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 In all my years I've never witnessed such apathy towards our national team. I guess consistent failure and disappointment has eventually taken its toll on everyone, and the general disdain for the FA means it all feels a bit 'meh' these days. I don't mind Southgate and I hope the fans and media give him a fair crack of the whip. I reckon the only way people will fall back in love with England is if we get to the later stages of a major tournament. I'm still convinced we've got the players in this country to compete with the best in the world - and that's the most frustrating thing.
Leicesterpool Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 Still not convinced such a lazy appointment, I don't dislike the guy he's a nice chap really but he's one of these people whose got failure written all over him. At the moment I can't understand it's difficult to find a decent England coach to take the job as there simply isn't hence why we should have considered going foreign again. However even so I still think there's better English coaches around than Southgate, I mean look at his CV what's he won as a manager!?... suffered relegation with Middlesbrough. It's not really eye catching stuff is it. Eddie Howe maybe a little too young for the job but at least he's got a better CV and had some success.
Dan Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 I genuinely don't get how he's proven himself. If that's what you call proven now then we really are turd.
Stadt Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 I'm not actually underwhelmed by this, it's not an inspiring appointment but at least he's a little bit more progressive than his predecessors. In the Spain and Scotland games there was more intensity in our play and we were more organised so I'm quietly optimistic this'll be a decent move. The crux of the issue with England is player quality so it's difficult for any England manager but at least I see Southgate as a step in the right direction. Lopetegui and Löwe were/are hardly proven managers and they were both apart of their national set ups so it goes to show that continuity is valued by superior footballing nations.
Jaspa Posted 1 December 2016 Posted 1 December 2016 What do we think then? Same old 60% - Even worse 35% - Conquering the world good 5%
Wymsey Posted 2 December 2016 Posted 2 December 2016 With Capello having the highest win rate over other hired-and-gone managers for the side, it just shows that having a manager of the same nationality of the team is a myth. Should've given it to someone like Hiddink or even Van Gaal. If Southgate does rubbish, his reputation within the game will get tarnished and another one bites the dust for the FA.

Even Sven, despite him being lauded as a failure we always reached the quarter finals which I'd take without even thinking of currently.
Richard Posted 3 December 2016 Posted 3 December 2016 Just keeping the seat warm for Our Saviour Eddie Howe
